Oh well attempt 4 is underway 1 hour 29 mins to go......

dont use the links from the beginning of this thread. go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx

one part of the site says download the other part of the site says download windows 7 beta. go from there instead.

Try downloading it here. You might also want to download the MP3 patch while you're there.
You can get a key here. Just follow the directions on the page. ;)

Both worked when I downloaded and got keys, even when MS's pages wouldn't load.

Hope this helps. :)

Trying it again, this time with safari, i forgot i was using the Firefox beta version, maybe thats why the download kept quitting......

Hold on!!!
:runs in: Late breaking news! I was wrong!

http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3124

Seems that if you have over 4GB of RAM, in order to use the extra 500MB and whatever memory is on your graphics card, you need to run a 64bit OS. If you want, wait till tomorrow. I plan on backing up the bit of data I have loaded onto my Win7 partition and installing a fresh copy of Win7 64bit as I just got myself a key for it. Will give you a heads up if the drivers work without issue or not.

I'll probably install 64-bit tonight and do the drivers tomorrow. Please PM me if the drivers work. Do you have the same MacBook revision (model 3.1, Santa Rosa Late 07) as me? Or how else can you tell if the drives work.. Lol. Thanks in advance.

Has anyone figured out how to add an Apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse in Windows 7?

Install/configure the Bluetooth driver. And if Vista/XP's bluetooth module is similar to Windows 7's, then go through the bluetooth device wizard thing.

What's funny is that my BT keyboard just worked, I didn't even pair it. I didn't realize it until just now ...

This happens to me when doing fresh installs of Leopard and Vista/XP. I just turn my MM and keyboard on, press a few keys and click a few times. It magically pairs. In Leopard, the devices are added to the bluetooth device list.

i didn't know what to take a screen cap of, so here are random pics. haha

i LOVE that messenger. i wish it was on the mac. :(

the new windows media. i didn't have any music to play on it. i should have imported a cd.

the windows explorer

moviemaker?

anybody but me notice the lack of standard windows apps on 7? maybe because its beta...but they offer windows live apps for download. they suck mostly. i didnt think moviemaker could get toned down any worse...then i downloaded moviemaker live.

it's beta, that's why there aren't a lot of programs. Does Flash, Shockwave, Java work on Windows 7? Those are the 3 internet plug ins I download and install on every OS... since I browse the internet a lot.

Vista betas all had the default windows programs such as moviemaker, etc. i think its strange that 7 doesnt. i think its stranger that you have to download them as "live" downloads and they are piss poor.

Not exactly.

Everything I've read suggest that Microsoft has decided to move Windows Mail, Photo Gallery and Movie Maker from the Windows division to the Live division in order untie their development cycles from the operating system.

I believe Paul Thurrott confirmed that with Microsoft on his blog and Windows Weekly podcast.

Windows Mail, Photo Gallery and Movie Maker won't be in the final build.

Well, I successfully installed the 32-bit version of Windows 7 onto Boot Camp. I also have a version installed to VM Ware. So far so good!
Boot Camp performs better (duh), but I'm impressed how stable this beta is compared to the Vista beta when it came out. This is more like Vista SP2 or something...
Any Apple specific drivers needed? So far, I have not put the OSX boot DVD in to load any drivers. I'm wondering about sound and video...? Thanks!

I decided to experiment using my Pro desktop, so I installed the 64 bit in VMware and it worked great, except for when I tried to open any game. I tried to run minesweeper, freecell, chess, and something else, and each time it totally froze my VM. I had to choose restart from the VMware menu, and even then it took a good 10 minutes to do it.

Tomorrow I am going to try the 32 bit in VMware, and probably install the 64 bit in boot camp to see how it goes.

Blame the European Union and their anti trust legeslation...

Microsoft is basically prohibited from including any applications that would be worth using with their OS...

Anyway, tonight I loaded up the public beta onto my Thinkpad and was honestly really surprised at how quickly it installed. From inserting the disk to an useable desktop was about 25 minutes. Most drivers were automatically downloaded and installed, only the finnicky ultranav driver didn't get pulled down automatically. IE 8 still has a few rendering issues, but installing Opera fixed that for me, installing FF3 or Safari would also be an easy fix. The revised and improved Windows Explorer once again shows just how out of date and klunky finder feels in comparison. File, Application, and even Control panel searching is VERY fast out of the box, much faster than Vista. The new taskbar is cool, I can see how it will speed up some tasks, if nothing else it is nice eye candy, however it does take a little getting used to. WiFi is MUCH improved over Vista and XP, I had the option to connect to my local WiFi network durring initial system configuration, very unusual for a Windows laptop as usually you would have to install drivers. Switching from network to network is VERY smooth, connections are established very quickly. The UI is overall very polished and smooth, plenty of nice window transitions, but none of them have an impact on performance unlike Vista, even on my 3 year old T60 that only has a 64MB x1300 and 1GB of RAM (will be changing that soon).

So far I don't have any major gripes, but we will see what comes up after a few more weeks of daily use.

I am very impressed so far, Microsoft so far seems to have a real winner with Windows 7...

Help! I downloaded both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions from Microsoft's site. Only thing to do was burn the ISO to disc (DVD). I was using the 64-bit disc and booted from it. It immediately ran up the following:

1.
2.
select cd-rom boot type:

<end>
my keyboard wouldn't type anything and I ended up rebooting. I tried booting from the EFI Boot and the Windows options when you hold down option key during boot. Both of those options turned up the above message. What did I do wrong?

Hi guys, anyone help with this audio problem:

1. Installed W7 beta.
2. Inserted Leopard DVD and did BootCamp drivers (had some device drivers not work properly)
3. Downloaded Vista 32-bit Bootcamp 2.1 update and ran it - device manager now reports all is well.

Problem is I hear no sound. The drivers appears to be installed fine, no conflicts and I can slide the volume up and down fine. The sound up/down keys on the MacBook show the level on screen but I don't hear any sound 'ticks' or other things from the OS.

I'm on a Nov 07 X3100 MacBook (see sig) on a BootCamp partition that also runs in VMWare. Currently I am in BootCamp with the audio issue.

Looking at the Leopard DVD, I think my MacBook uses Sigmatell audio drivers.

Thanks for any help.

I put windows 7 on a spare laptop i had to test. The laptop is a Asus f9sg specs are as follows.

12 inch wxga
3 gig memory
2.10 Ghz cpu
128 meg dedicated 9300m G
250 gig HD

Install took about 20 minutes. No issues during Install
Sound worked using default driver
I installed vista video drivers and they are working great. testing daily to see how stable.
I had network trouble at first but it turns out I screwed up the key. works fine now.

I didnt like it at first but it is slowly growing on me. its very snappy. This laptop originally shipped with vista. I think I will upgrade it to windows 7 when its released. especially if my video driver holds out.

^^
spriter, I have the same MacBook as you do. To get the audio working, install the Realtek drivers. The link can be found on page 2 of this thread. Post #36 I think. Mirror 3 was the fastest download for me.

Microsoft will stop officially bundling applications such as these into Windows 7. They have also dropped an email application too. Information about this can all be found on microsoft.com and it appears to be intentional and NOT just the BETA.

Again it clearly is to appease the anti-trust regulators. There are improvements though, at least windows media centre can now playback a DVD without having to install optional codecs / dvd decoder.

Great! That worked - thanks drummerboy :)

Having bluetooth issues. Everything, audio, wifi, graphics, etc all work fine. I'm using a MacBook (Santa Rosa) 2.2GHz stock with 4GB memory. This is the late 07 model and the only problem I have is bluetooth. I can't pair my Mighty Mouse and aluminum keyboard. Bluetooth icon shows up and it can detect my Mighty Mouse. I click next and it tries to pair... but the window just lags at that point. Hoping for a fix. Good night everyone, it's 2:11AM right now for me.

Hi, so first, here are my comp specs...MacPro 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Xeon
memory: 5GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
version 10.5.1
BootCamp 2.0

I am running 10.5.1 because I have been having huge wifi signal issues with anything above 10.5.4, so my solution was to downgrade...

So I have been able to get through the entire process of installing Windows 7 (32-bit) up to the final install check mark. It does the reboot but then flashes a blue screen for a split second with lots of text on it citing errors, but I can't catch what its saying. My computer will restart and throw up a black page giving me options to boot in safe mode. I tried those options, and nothing works. I've tried multiple times to do a clean install with boot camp, and I get the same error every time. Is this due to a bad burn (used disk utility) or is it something having to do with the Beta? Could it be because I am running 10.5.1? Any help with this would be great.

A note to fellow programmers out there, there is a beautiful utility inside Windows 7 called Windows PowerShell V2. I'm currently finishing the last bits of my java battery gauging application for my dad's work. Very nice interface.

To Microsoft, why the #$%^ couldn't you release this instead of Vista? It's more than night/day difference, more like Earth to Pluto. It's HUGE. I would have actually bought this to replace XP Pro that I used to Boot Camp with. I'm actually quite satisfied with Windows 7, unlike the BSoDs that were practically normal and quite casual in Vista. Not to mention Aero screwing over your CPU every time you drag a window... This is what Windows Vista should of been. Instead of $300 million ads, this is what you should have released.

WordPad and Paint got facelifts, they both have the Office themed layout on the top toolbars. Looks pretty neat, and very awesome. Windows 7 blasted me off my feet by how stable and light it is. Doesn't have the powerful feel of Leopard to me, but quick and nimble instead.

Installation seems a bit quirky, compared to the sleek UI designed by Apple. From there, things get muddy and confusing. But after you drag yourself through the mud, it's like light at the end of the tunnel. First impressions are rather good, runs much quicker (boot times, program launch times) than XP or Vista.

I have the 32-bit version installed on my computer through VMWare Fusion and it runs pretty smoothly. The only problem I've encountered so far is with games. It crashes whenever I try to play the default card games.

I'm going to install the 64-bit version later and see if it makes a difference.

as noted before in this thread, it's most likely a vmware fusion thing.. about the games crashing

It could be because you're running it in VM...

The Windows 7 installion experience is fairly crude compared to the slick system Apple has employed for around 8 years now.

After that, it's all uphill. I am on bootcamp, so I popped in the Leopard DVD and all the drivers installed. Haven't tried bluetooth or all of the ports yet though.

The new Window Switching via the Dock is very nicely implemented.

I'm sure I'll find some faults and annoyances as time goes by, but first impressions are positive. And yes, it runs better and faster than Vista on the same hardware.
