backup is creating a problem!!!!!!!

HI
thanx for this great guide
but i have faced some probs and would like to share with others.
when i made the backup from my initial, non JB fone i had copied the whole folder and kept it aside
then i did the whole process as you had said ( 1 st restore to orig firmware 2.1 and then do the jail break)
it worked flawlessly ( apart from crashing in vista 32 bit, i tried running the quickpwn software in compatibility mode of vista for WIN XP SP2 and it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)\
it jailbroke the fone as u had said, with cydia and instaler and all
but when i am trying to restore from the backup, IT IS NOT REWRITING MY SMS,CONTACTS,SETTINGS and other data, also it just took arnd a min or two to complete the backup????????instead of taking 25 min or so as u had said???
what shud i do coz technically i am back to the day on which i had bought the iphone!!!!!!

now i may be wrong here but i think this might b the cause for it
when i had backed up my iphone previously with my data, i copied the backup folder and then restored the original firmware, what it might have done is, it might have CLEANED up my backup data and rewrite it with a fresh backup that had no data like contacts, calendar, sms,et al.
i tried copying the backup folder which i had (with my data) even after that it is not showing any contacts, sms, etc.
WHAT SHUD I DO????

any help is greatly appreciated
thanks

Okay, if you copied the backup folder from inside the "MobileSync" folder to somewhere else on your computer before you jailbroke and created another backup, then simply drop that "Backup" folder back into "MobileSync," and try to restore from backup again, it should show up. If you dont have a copy of that backup folder anywhere, and "MobileSync" is empty, then i am afraid all might be lost, and you'll have to start over clean... :(

Let me know if that works, or if you need anymore help...

i have tried this twice, but the backup takes about 2-3 minutes and is back with no contacts or sms etc.

Hmm, what probably happened is you didn't move your original backup before you restored with clean firmware and it made another backup which overwrote your previous backup that you had...it happens... :(

hey do you have a link for that blue skin and icons you have??
I still cant find it online!

GPS creating problem after jailbreak

after jailbreaking my iphone 3g 16gb, i have come accross another problem.GPS is not able to connect after JB, it tries to lock the satellite but it returns with the msg " YOUR LOCATION CAN NOT BE DETERMINED" !!!!!!!!!
now there was no problem during the jailbreaking process
i dont know why is this happening. also i have tried the gps with other apps as well all return the same response.
i did try switching ON/OFF the location service , restarted my fone a no. of times but it hasnt changed.
now SOMETIMES IT WORKS and sometimes it doesnt???
what can b the cause for this ????

It's quite frustrating I know. But the PwnageTool does not touch anything to do with Location Services. I would find a NEW 2.1.ipsw and break from that.

I have got cydia and installer now. I have downloaded themes onto my computer and am now trying to get them onto my iphone. Do I go to my installer and click install tab? Because I do not have an install tab.

bumping for being more useful in jailbreaking a 3g on windows than any of the currently outdated stickies

I will be running this once my download is done. But I wanted to ask, how can you revert back to the 2.1 factory load for warranty issues if this doesn't get erased by just a backup restore? Thanks!

This guide explicitly tells you how to make a backup of your backup; I believe that's how the OP phrased it verbatim. Read through it again.

To actually go through with using the backup, you must take the copy of the "Backup" folder that you should have, assuming you followed the steps, copy it back to its original location, put your phone in DFU and restore to factory followed by restoring from backup, which iTunes will prompt you for upon a successful completion of the factory restore.

Edit: It appears you're wondering just how to put a phone back to factory settings. If you don't know how to do this, which is the first step in an error-free jailbreak, you need to read-up some more and use the tools available to you!

Well I have installed the jailbreak with success for the most part. I did the part and made 2 backup copies of the backup folder. When my phone was done I copied that folder back to the original area and did a restore from backup and it won't restore my original stuff!! I have tried this twice and do not understand what is wrong. It says restored and thats it.

Alright it worked this time. Make sure you don't name the phone next time itunes opens after the restore of the new firmware. That screws it up. :)

Excellent guide. Worked perfectly, and I cannot believe I have waited this long to jailbreak - iPhone just got 10x better.

Thanks.

This is a beautiful Theme you have put together! The one piece I can't find is the WIFI icon. Can you tell me where you found that one? I can find it a macthemes2.net

Thanks in advance for your help.

As stated in his post, it is available on Cydia. Just search for "bird" and it should be one of the only ones to pop up.

Thanks for the reply, but I am not having trouble finding the Bluebird theme...it is just the WIFI icon that I can't track down. It does not appear to be part of the theme, so I suspect this is something separate he modified...much like the bottom icon area.

Apologies for the misunderstanding. After a pretty thorough search through the places where icons are located I can't find this particular one, either. There are a few sets that I'm rather fond of located @ http://www.modmyi.com/forums/downloads.php?do=cat&id=14&sort=date though! :)

Sorry that i haven't responded to this thread in a while (i actually just noticed it's been bumped up quite a few times the past few days, and am glad that this guide is helping people), but anyways the WiFi icon is on that page you linked to...scroll down until you see "xdim's wifi icons." :)
