If it makes you happy do it I guess. But tbh the word “slightly” really sums it up. If you are not moving from one place to another frequently I would suggest buying LG OLED TV instead (if you don’t have it yet). Mine 55’ is perfect for movies. At night the experience is probably more immersive than all those VR ski googles that I have never tried yet, albeit it still gives me eye strain after 3 hours of watching.

And why LG? It got Airplay so if you don’t have Apple TV you can still stream content from any of your Apple devices
I do and it’s glorious but I have to fight my wife for it as she watches sex in the city reruns again

I have M1 iPad pro with magic keyboard, apple pencil, and M3Pro Macbook. When I see, for example, excel or powerpoint on both devices, the functionalities are so different.

iPad versions are very lacking in terms of functionalities. But, at the same time, iPad versions allow me to some handwritings on excel and powerpoint whereas I cannot do that on Mac due to lack of touch screen.

As of now, the only way to use fully fledged version of powerpoint with handwriting features is to use pen supporting windows laptops. And with Apple devices, I cannot do this as of now.

Hopefully, this shall be resolved in future.

My 2018 iPad Pro is definitely starting to show its age.

For example, when I am mirroring pdf documents in notability via my Apple TV in class, the documents will sometimes freeze when I am trying to scroll them. I am not sure what exactly the issue is (ram shortage perhaps?); hopefully 8gb ram will help alleviate this.

I have also been experiencing ghost touches on my screen. Like I am browsing YouTube, and it will randomly jump to another video without me doing anything.

Battery life doesn't seem to be as good as it once was, even with a recent replacement. Guess that's what 5+ years of software updates does to it.

Not sure if I want to pay for 5g, since 5g connectivity in my area is still pretty poor, and I have been getting by with sharing a sim plan with my iPhone (which is also still on 4g). Does Multi-sim work with e-sim? Will need to check with my carrier on that.

I suppose slightly faster loading times on apps never hurt.

I expect stage manager to not quite be worth the hype, but I do have a portable monitor at my desk which I use to output my Nintendo Switch to, and I guess it will be fun to play around with for a while.

At this point, the iPad has formed an integral part of my workflow, I know my iPad Pro is nearing the end of its shelf life, I have no idea when the next iPad refresh after this will be, and I may as well upgrade now to ensure the next 5 years of solid performance.

This is a known and relatively widespread issue with these IPads.
I had mine replaced twice by Apple (under warranty) for exactly this problem.

I don't think we are. I have a MacBook Pro, yet I choose to use my iPad for reasons. It's better at what it does.

I think there's a small number of people who think by injecting these snide comments into every conversation can start to build a false impression of a larger consensus. I'm personally tired of every conversation getting hijacked by this half considered nonsense.

This is correct. Thank God that Apple doesn't determine its product plans based on the opinions of vocal minorities on internet forums.

With my M4 iPad Pro I’m going to...

...not rip out my hair when I use it, cuz that's what's happening right now with my current iPad Air 2.

Lol, I stopped using the Air 2 after iOS 11. It was pretty annoying that even just using it for ebook reading, it took several seconds to re-render when I'm adjusting the font size in Marvin.

My aunt's making good use of it though.

Yeah, as long as Apple positions iPad as a mobile device in its core, and bear the consequences of installing an OS that’s going to hamper its hardware potential. To me Apple loves the consequences so I don’t see them adding macOS app support anytime soon if at all. So iPad will continue to be glorified iPhone, never change. Maybe that’s what iPad is for, as a glorified iPhone.
You say "Yeah, as long as Apple positions iPad as a mobile device in its core" as if that is a bad thing. I say it is not Apple positioning, rather iPad is a mobile device in its core.

Yeah, I had been using a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5", but my son had been complaining about his iPad Air 2. So, a few months ago we swapped my iPad Pro for his iPad Air 2.

Let's just say, it's been a real struggle. Everything is so laggy, but I guess I can't complain too much given that it's 10 years old. I'll struggle with it for another month or two until I can get my iPad Pro 11" M4 through the edu promotion.

Strangely enough though, my daughter is just fine with her iPad Air 2, but I think she mainly just uses it for Netflix and sometimes Zoom and iMessage.

Can I ask what is it that it does better than a laptop?

My thoughts are...

1. watch a movie or TV show as it's more portable and easier to handle.
2. touch style games or games that take advantage of a gyroscope or whatever it's called.
3. more handy overall

Personally, I prefer using a computer for everything except number 1 as I don't play mobile games very often.

For #1, one thing that really irritates me on Macs is you can't download videos off some streaming services like Netflix for local viewing. The videos can only be streamed. On iPads and iPhones, you can download to the device, which is very useful for offline viewing when traveling (eg. on a plane).

My MacBook /other computer is better for most things in isolation but to use them requires more commitment, like a desk to work on or moving to the office to use them. Isolating myself from the rest of the family.

The iPad I can pick up and be semi present. Typically in the evening wife and I will be collapsed on the couch and she’s hogging the tv with something I don’t want to watch. I want to be there in the same space but want to also look at things I’m interested in on my iPad.

If I’m travelling for a work trip I don’t want to do anything personal on my work device and I don’t want the weight of two full computers.

If I’m on a plane iPad is more manageable for entertainment, especially if seat in front reclines. Also it’s harder to save content from eg Netflix or Disney on a computer whereas the iPad apps let you do so. So you can watch stuff offline

I don’t say “apple position iPad as a mobile device” as a “bad thing”. I say if Apple wants iPad to be a versatile mobile device, they will not let iPadOS be macOS derivative. As we all know, Apple forked iOS to build iPadOS, not macOS. This means iPad will continue to be a glorified iPhone in its core, and I can clearly see people liking it that way. That’s perfectly fine and I won’t object.

Well yes but someone has to fight back against every other thread that has some variant of “the original iPad is good enough for anyone, iPadOS means there is no use having better hardware”
Which is kind of true to be brutally honest. But we can all see how this thread goes.

I agree with you. But I’m afraid we’re outnumbered on this one

The iPad can benefit from bringing MacOS features but just porting MacOS would not be a good idea.
I agree with you. There's a reason why the iPad is a more popular tablet than the Surface Pro. While there's certainly improvements that can be made to iPadOS, a desktop/laptop OS isn't necessarily the best fit for a tablet.

With my M4 IPad I’m going to

finally be able to replace my macOS MacBook Air.
with no regrets and no compromises.

iPadOS can now declare victory over macOS.

* the iPad Pro M4 (13"), when used with the new Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro M4, and the upcoming iPadOS 18

Different devices. The point is that a tablet is a tablet, not "a useful replacement for a desktop/laptop..."

That said, many folks do want tablets to be useful replacements for desktops/laptops and use tablets that way. And given the increasing numbers of today's adult users that learned tablet usage literally right along with learning to walk/talk, it behooves the likes of Apple to keep moving iPads in the direction of "useful replacement for a desktop/laptop..."
Eventually, Apple will cave and bring macOS (a light version) to the iPad. But not until they’ve introduced a high-end, folding MacBook iPad hybrid that solves both “problems” and charges twice as much for it.

(And that’s not a criticism b/c, as I’ve pointed out earlier, I am a shareholder.) 😛

As mentioned before elsewhere, iOS is a fork of macOS. They started with OS X, cut it down, and modified it to fit and work better on phones. And nowadays iOS/iPadOS and macOS share lots of common code, and they are developed in parallel.

I bought a tab s9 to switch from an M1 12.9 inch iPad in the fall. The blooming on the 12.9 was an issue and I wanted to give android a shot, and the s9 screen is unreal. However, I miss being able to connect AirPods seamlessly and respond to imessages, so going back to iPad and scooping the 11 inch instead of the 13. Will be doing a lot of content consumption, notes for work, and editing photos recreationally.

I’m certainly not lost. Even MKBHD tentatively calls this new iPad Pro more of a spec bump than anything else, especially its hardware. Do I like my iPad Pro M1? Yes. I like to use it. Can it replace my Mac and PC? No. M4 won’t change that. Apple Pencil pro won’t change that. Nano glass won’t change that.
Why would iPads replace your Mac? An iPad with MacOS on would be a Mac.

It would be interesting to see usage patterns regarding keyboard usage with iPads as this is a usage mode that a laptop can do. I bet it is not high compared to pencil and especially touch only mode. Individual usage patterns are not interesting for Apple, they work with population statistics to make devices for the majority.

More like a feedback loop. They made iPad as a glorified iPhone initially for a couple years, now everyone accepts iPad being a glorified iPhone. Keyboard, mouse and Apple Pencil are added much later and expensive, so this glorified iPhone doesn’t really pick up steam in terms of replacing Mac or become a good Mac substitute.

I love the iPad, and always have. I’ve been using them since the iPad 2. I’m more than happy to pony up for the newest model, especially one like the M4. Will it replace my Mac? Definitely not, but most of the time it will suffice.
