Two reasons:

1) Voice does switch off my podcast listening (Overcast). Very disturbing. Not happening with iSmoothrun.

2) Do not like voice, I prefer sounds as they can accomplish almost as much but in less time. Especially when I do short intervals like 30 secs on/off the watch is speaking most of the time ;-)

Edit: sound and haptics combination of course

If you use the haptics and not voice then watchOS automatically adds a beep as well if you have the watchOS alert volume above zero, so that may help.

WorkOutDoors uses OpenStreetMap, which is sort of like a wikipedia for maps in that it is maintained by millions of volunteers. Many thanks to them for all their hard work!

I also use a company called Mapbox to host and supply the the OSM data to the app (for which they charge a lot of money!).

If you want to join in then please take a look at the OSM website: www.openstreetmap.org. Any trails appearing on this map should appear in WorkOutDoors, so you can effectively edit the map that appears in the app (and thousands of other apps and websites). Note that it may take a while for updates to get through the Mapbox systems.
Thanks, but Just to make sure you didn't misunderstand. I am already pretty happy with Workoutdoors and the detail level of OpenStreetMap. My point was that unlike the previous poster, I don't want it to look more like Apple maps, at least not with the lack of detail in Apple Maps where I live. I have heard they are rolling out new maps, so that may change in future.

On my workout today I had exactly these settings and there was no countdown before an interval started. Strangely enough I only had haptic feedback and one sound when the rest intervals started, not the fast intervals. Checked how the workout is defined, but found nothing different.
Any idea?

I didn't misunderstand - I just thought people would like to know where the maps came from, especially as it is the OSM volunteers that deserve the credit. But many thanks for praising the map! :)

What sort of interval was ending? If it is a time interval then it should give the countdown, but any other intervals give different notifications. For example a distance interval will say when you are 100m from the end, then 50m etc.

It was a time based workout with warmup (end manually), and then 10x(1 minute fast, 1 minute rest), cool down.
Was always surprised when the fast intervals started -> notified by pace alert that I was too slow. No alerts before.

It's worth checking the schedule alert settings. To do this press the watch screen and tap Settings then Alerts then Running then Scheduled Interval Alerts. Then check the settings for "Next Interval Warning".

Thanks! All set to "Haptic and Screen".

Glad I could help. Switch on the voice option and hopefully you will hear more alerts in the future.

Maybe you misunderstood me. It was already set to "Haptic and Screen, Voice off".
If switching Voice to on, won't this stop my running podcast then?

Sorry - I am answering so many questions about the app at the moment that I lost track of the point of your question!

To be honest I don't really know why watchOS beeps when an app asks it to vibrate, let alone why it is not beeping for you. Most people ask to get rid of the beep. I may add the ability to beep instead of speak, but you are the first person to want it, so it won't be high on the list. Sorry about that.

Not sure if this is relevant to the recent alerts discussion, but I noticed I only get haptic alerts when my screen is on (my arm raised to wake while I’m looking at it). If my arm is down with the screen off and a workout running, I only get voice alerts. I’ve checked every setting I could think of (background refresh is on, schedule alert settings all on, system haptics on, etc.) and it just won’t play nice. I’ve even gone through and toggled everything off, then back on, and a hard reset with no luck.

If my screen is on (my arm raised and I’m looking at the display), I get alerted to everything (display, voice, and haptics). This occurs on my custom intervals, as the other alert settings (every one mile, every ten minutes, etc.) appear to run as normal.

Anyone know of a fix for this?

I have never heard of that before. So you get haptics when your wrist is down for all other alerts but not for interval alerts? Have you got voice alerts switched on for these interval alerts, and if so then do you hear them when the wrist is down?

I have voice alerts switched on for everything and I get the voice alerts as normal, regardless of the watch display being on (raised to wake) or off (my wrist down). The haptics are the only anomaly.

But only for interval alerts? I just want to confirm that you can feel the haptics for the alerts every mile or every 10 minutes but not for alerts related to intervals? That is very strange. I could understand why you might possibly never feel alerts when your arm is at a different angle (I find the haptics quite weak), but to feel them when your arm is lowered for some alerts but not others is very odd.

The app doesn't do anything different for the interval alerts. Which alerts are you using and not feeling the haptic for: the initial ones that describe each interval? The warning ones at the end of an interval? The notifications during an interval? The alerts when you go out of the target range for an interval? Sorry for all the questions.

Also do you get the haptic alerts if the voice alerts are switched off. No-one else has mentioned this but it could be that they just hear the voice alerts and are not worried that there is no haptic.

Sorry for the newbie question, but does Workoutdoors write the Activity information in the Apple Workout app also?

That is correct. To confirm: I do not receive haptics only on interval schedules and only when my wrist is down (or the screen is off).

The app doesn't do anything different for the interval alerts. Which alerts are you using and not feeling the haptic for: the initial ones that describe each interval? I use haptics for every alert option. I don't use target alerts, but I have everything switched on.

Also do you get the haptic alerts if the voice alerts are switched off. No-one else has mentioned this but it could be that they just hear the voice alerts and are not worried that there is no haptic.

I should have mentioned earlier that I tried this while diagnosing. When I switched voice alerts off, the haptics functioned as normal. I remember you mentioning in this thread before that WatchOS will prioritize voice alerts over haptics. Unfortunately, when I toggle voice alerts back on, the haptics go back to only alerting when the screen is on.

Yes, it writes the data to both Apple's Health system (from where it can be read by many apps) and also to its own iPhone app.

This saving of the data in two places is particularly useful when iOS fails to store some information in Apple's Health system, such as with the current bug in iOS 14. Those people affected by this who use workout apps that only store the data in Apple's system have lost their GPS routes, but people using WorkOutDoors still have access to them in the WorkOutDoors app.

The way watchOS deals with haptics and sounds at the same time has always confused me and this just adds to the confusion. The app is not doing anything different for those alerts. I will investigate it, but to be honest it won't be high priority because if you can hear the voice then you probably don't need the haptics.

I have a major release almost ready for testing that I have been working on for months. After that has been successfully released to the wild then I will work on a version with Stryd support and enhanced route functionality.

Fantastic news!!!! More than happy to help test things for you when it comes to that.
I am a beta tester for Stryd already so do keep me in mind;)

Great news! I love your app, it's absolutely the most fantastic app one can get for fitness tracking. Thank you!

Did my first workout with WoD in a long while (have been using Stryd's AW app pretty much exclusively);
Loved seeing where I am on the map and the customizability.

Which begs the question- how easy is it to follow a route designed using Strava's route builder or one put together on any other platform (Garmin Connect, Footpath etc)?

You can upload any route that stored in a GPX file and display it on top of the map. Most systems allow routes to be exported as GPX files, and you can often find what you want by simply Googling for the name of a trail and 'GPX'.

The app does not yet offer turn by turn navigation for routes, but that is planned for the future. In the meantime you can configure alerts to warn you when you deviate from the route.

Note that if possible it is best to use GPX files which contain elevation information. This allows the app to draw the route in varying shades of purple according to the gradient, from red for steep uphill to blue for steep downhill.

Welcome back to the app. Glad you still like it!

Now that would be quite the game changer (along with Stryd support, which you already confirmed is coming);

Having TbT navigation would make me seriously consider selling my Garmin!
