Probably not possible with modern iOS versions, take up too much space for data and cache for it to be functional. 32GB would probably work okay, but wouldn't be a lot of space for user data like apps / photos / video.

Until we can pretty much stream data in real-time to cloud storage or something, we'll probably rely on having at least some local storage. Maybe something to look at for in future 6G / 7G networks, although not sure how it would work in places that wouldn't have coverage.

Local storage always wins.

That why I like 2 TB + on my mobile devices.

That way I can still watch stuff even if I don't have internet. :)

My current iPhone is 256GB (minimum for ProRes), and it's reporting 181GB available, so quite a lot of space "wasted' for me. (top three: 8.66GB music, 3.24GB photos, 2.3GB Discord(?!))

I offload data to iCloud, and have decent internet / data coverage so it doesn't bother me that it needs to be quietly pulled down in the background. Only time I'll keep things local is if I know I'll need it like during a flight or something.

This is what I use right now sense there is no 4 TB iPad or iPhone yet.

Holds me over for now.

Nope. When there is less than 10 Gigs of space left on a phone (I think it was actually 9) for me it slows down significantly. I bought a refurbed iPhone 8 in the past when Sprint was almost giving them away. I was coming from a 128 GB 7. And while I only have 58 GB of stuff on the phone it was super slow. If I deleted enough stuff to get it down to under 55 GB, it ran at normal speed again but I Could tell as soon as some download or too many pictures pushed it past that threshold as it got super slow. It felt like I was constantly deleting videos, etc from that phone. Definitely would never get that size again.

Yeah, ideally have at least 10-15% of your total storage available, this goes for pretty much any digital device at the moment.

Do you think that 16gb is enough for the entry level iphones like the iphone 15 or iphone 15 pro? If apple were to make a cheaper 16gb model ($100 cheaper) would you buy it?
There would be other ways to make an iPhone less expensive besides limiting storage.
I’d rather buy an older used iPhone that’s a real iPhone than some sort of pseudo iPhone

Today 16gb of storage wouldn’t be enough to run the OS let alone have any apps. Wouldn’t be worth while to have. Now, if they were to create a light weight version of iOS and release a 16bg phone in the SE line I could see this gaining traction with some very basic users. Pricing this phone sub $350 would be ideal for someone like my grandmother who barely uses a phone and doesnt need any features other then calls messages and very basic internet.

Super idea! An iPhone with very simplistic versions of Phone, FaceTime, and Messages — I mean, suitable for a toddler simple — would be a godsend for us who are tech support for senior parents or other anti-tech people. I’m all about being helpful but my parents are very opposed to change, including a strong lack of effort to learn anything new.

P.S. My mother is someone in the club that can somehow "butt dial" an iPhone.

time waster perhaps?

Seriously - why are threads like this even dignified with responses. This is the problem with Macrumors these days - too many ridiculous threads. Is it too much to ask for Quality Control?
Probably for the fun twists that these kind of threads take, and you dignified the thread too 😂

quality control would be answering the question rather than being rude?
Nobody is rude here, and if you’re gonna hang here on MacRumors you might have to upgrade your humor. Don’t take it personal.
You got plenty of answers.

16GB of storage does not work in 2023 and never will. Back in 2007 when the app store never existed, yes. System data and OS updates alone would full the phone.

256 GB of storage is the best entry level storage.

Nope, wouldn’t even buy a 64gb device these days.

Storage gets eaten up so fast these days and managing data in iOS isn’t exactly a super smooth experience.

My issue with storage space is that most apps do not clean up their storage usage. Prime video, Netflix, and the other streaming apps will use a lot of data with no reasonable way to recover the space used. Even offloading the app and reinstalling will not recover the space used.

64 GB is plenty if your only Apple device is an iPad. If the device is your daily driver like a iPhone, Samsung, Google, etc. Then at least 128GB storage is the minimum.

While I agree this thread seems silly, I don't understand the problem you have with a hypothetical questioning the amount of storage actually needed in contrast to price. There are quite a few threads about downgrading, and this is a similar topic, even if 16GB sounds silly present day. I have known a lot of people who pay for far more storage than they need due to ignorance, some could run 16GB. If you want editorial pieces the front page exists, if you see a post on forums you're not interested in you're welcome to disregard.

I see a pattern.

Would you buy an iPad without touchscreen?
Would you buy an iPhone with 16 GB storage?
*soon*
Would you buy an iMac with a hole in the back?
Would you buy Airpods that have passed through the guts of a donkey?

One look at macrumors is proof enough fanboys would pay extra for donkey poop airpods so i dunno where this price cut idea came from
