It is easy to get an estimate by adding the original 10k gold watch buyer and a percentage of ceramic watches...

I'd only pay more for a phone that was user upgradable. Imagine an iPhone where all of the components were plug-n-play, so if the next year you liked the new camera system you could swap that in.

There would have to be a guarantee from Apple that it would be fully-supported for at least ten years.
In even 5 years, a base model/cheap iPhone will be better than a $2K 2023 version. Why would you want to keep a phone for 10 years? Even if Apple still supported iPhone 5 with iOS 16, would you still be using it today?

I pay for the Pro iPhone every year, mainly because of the camera. The speed and screen have been 'good enough' for several years now. I'm not paying more for cosmetics.

My Apple Watch ultra had a scratch on the screen. More durable screen coming from aluminum model Watch was one of the deciding factors for me.

Since I’m convinced that the screen will scratch regardless. Nah i wouldn’t buy it

A while back, I would probably have been in the market for it. I like great materials, like Sapphire Glass and Titanium. Not to differentiate myself from others, but just because I like the look and feel of great materials. Up to AW 7, I've been buying the Titanium model just for that reason.
Then came along AW 8. I wanted to get one for the additional safety feature "Crash Detection".
I am simply not in the market for an AW Ultra. While it is a great product, it is simply not for me. Too big, too rugged.
The stainless steel models were not an option either. Just don't like that material.
So I went for the AW 8 base model with the aluminum case and Ion-X glass - and guess what, it's perfectly fine.
At the moment I am using an iPhone 12 Pro, and I really don't like the look and feel of that stainless steel frame. So I would love to have a different option. But considering my experience from the AW, for a future purchase, if they offered an aluminum option with the Pro features, I would rather go for that than titanium and save a few bucks.

How about a sapphire frame that blends into the screen so it’s all one piece? Just don’t drop it!

I want a screen that doesn’t scratch so easily.

A slab of sapphire with a screen sounds neat, could have a titanium back that comes off for assembly/repairs. You break it you then slap the internals in a new sapphire case.

I'm not insecure enough that I need to spend that much on a phone just to "differentiate"
“Differentiate“? In my world there is no phone envy. Most the people I know could care less about what phone you are using. I will buy iPhone Ultra, but for the features and not to impress anyone except maybe myself. Running my business is way more important than my phone.

Or touch it. How are you supposed to hold a phone that has touch controls on the side?
I want to be able to get rid of the Flashlight and Camera button on the home screen because I activate them all the time when I'm juggling other stuff. This looks like a nightmare of accidental touch!

Haptic or 3D touch, and it’s not the camera button doing that, it’s the horrible slide over thing that opens up the camera constantly. That’s got to be the worst element of iOS, the lock screen really isn’t, I can’t tell you how many times in the dark I’ve almost died because my flashlight turned off when I needed it most because I accidentally invoked the camera. That’s why we still need a jailbreak since that garbage is easily removed but Apple won’t let us.

It's happened more often with the flashlight. So it's totally the button. Good idea though. The slideover is also annoying.

While I don't agree that we should Jailbreak, I do agree that for every option Apple adds, there should be an option to disable it. The problem is, System Settings is such a nightmare, I don't see them adding more options anytime soon.

Also looking at how they ruined it for Ventura, it's apparent there isn't a team at Apple that knows how a good system settings app should operate

I for one would 100% Rock an Ultra set of features. When and. If merged with

Ultra Apple Watch
Ultra iPhone
and maybe Ultra AirPods

a tier of features small but mighty same way the Ultra surpasses the standard Apple Watch.

I appreciate a well-made design on phones and watches. A brushed titanium finish on an iPhone with a frosted glass back, of course I’ll pay the premium to buy one for myself. However if it’s bead-blasted like the one on the AWU, I’ll give it a pass.

Definitely not me, but i reckon people would pay $2000 for a iphone ultra with the same spec and design as the Apple Watch Ultra. Chunky and durable, with maybe 7” Mini LED screen (ultra thin bezels) and 5000 mh battery.

I usually get the Pro Max for the size(I’m a big guy with big hands) and for the camera improvements since I am a photographer. If Apple does split the Max & Ultra into 2 diff phones, I will still probably go with the Pro Max if the Ultra is just cosmetic/material changes such as thinner bezels & titanium frame. To me those don’t make a difference in my purchasing decision. I really don’t care. If however Apple gives the Ultra the better camera system, I may have to pay up. But $2k for a phone is getting kinda crazy.

It would have to have more features, more options, guaranteed support for a VERY long time, and a user friendly replaceable battery.
In other words.................

A few weeks ago I was keen on going a 15 Pro and if an Ultra model were to be released I would spend the extra (unless it was outrageously more expensive with little improvement on features that mattered to me). Maybe it would be like the 8 and X release having a different design for the Ultra.

As a naked phone user, I like the stainless steel as I prefer it scratch than dent. Though my 12 mini, 12 Pro and 13 mini were immaculate when I got rid of them. Titanium would be nice though depending what they do with the finish.

But recently I have decided to get a dedicated camera (X100VI when released). So now I'm just going with a regular 15 (redesign hopefully) and the money saved form not going Pro/Ultra can go towards something else. While I would like ProMotion, I'm fine with 60Hz on a phone (desktop has to be 120+), the rest of the specs I'm more than happy with.

While current flip phones aren't the most appealing to me, Apples take on it may sway me and that is where I'd be willing to spend big. The rectangle slab hasn't really changed.

As long as it doesn’t have the ugly camera design of the pro, and has some fun colours that are designed for cool fun and alternative people, as opposed to 60 year old partners at MBB

I see no advantage whatsoever of paying that much for phone in all honesty. I’d rather poke myself in the eye with a sharp stick. Phones are already hideously overpriced without that sort of faux status nonsense.

You really do have a bee in your bonnet about not getting the top spec and/or latest phone lol
