I'm generally skeptical about most of the "wearable" computing concepts bandied about. (Especially Google Glass, which I think is an absolute abomination..)

I don't think we'll see an iWatch. For several very good reasons, not the least of which is this: Most people don't wear watches that much - they rely on their smartphones to tell them the time. And people who do spend good money on watches view them more as a piece of jewelry (ie. Rolex, Omega, TAG) or sports equipment: Timex Ironman etc.

The iWatch concept seems predicated on solving a very tiny problem: taking your phone out of your pocket or purse to check text messages. Unless I'm really missing something, I don't think there is enough there to change millions of people's lifestyles, and persuade them to drop $200 or so every couple of years to meet Apple's upgrade cycle. And I think Apple's engineers and marketers have this already figured out.

There are jobs that "wearables" can do: heart rate and blood pressure monitors; fitness trackers; action sports cameras; etc. But these tend to be "niche" roles better performed by specialist equipment - and made by companies with sales expectations somewhat smaller than those of Apple. (Selling $200 million with of cameras a quarter is fantastic for GoPro - but its a rounding error for Apple.)

Maybe I'll be proved wrong. Maybe the folks at Apple have figured out some amazing new use for a wrist-worn computing device. But I doubt it.

I might but it depends on a few things. I like the idea that when I'm cycling I could see who is calling me on my mobile rather than stop and dig out ny phone from my back pocket (especially when its cold and under layers and in a zip lock bag to stop it getting wet). Notifications for text likewise. I'm not too fussed for seeing my excercise data as I'm cycling as I prefer to get my head down and get on with it! (Although I could see me getting into that if it tied in with strava to show upcoming segments or a basic distance travelled. )

Other than that it would have to look ok. I'm not talking looking like a high end watch. I envisage it being a sports watch so only to look ok with that in mind.

Finally. Price! I would only want it to be an extension of my phone (but don't want to take calls or reply to texts on it) for notifications if it was under £100 I would consider but anymore and I'll stick with my cheap swatch and stopping when I need to check my phone when cycling!!

My needs are probably quite specific and something may already exist that fits the bill but I havent seen it yet

Nah… it's a con

I haven't worn a watch for decades, and seldom carry a phone or any other gadget. When I do is is a basic $25 Nokia with a B&W screen….. No GPS in my life….. Not even an alarm clock.

Yet I manage to get up and get to where I have to go, on time…….only to discover that many I am meeting are late, despite carrying all the mod cons.

Thats just some people. I have family members who are always (and I mean always) late for everything. Shame of it is that they are teaching their kids its ok. There's always an excuse or its shrugged off as if it doesn't matter.

Im with you on this. I hate being late for anything and use my smartphone to remind me about stuff. Not sure a smartwatch would add anything for this though. I see it as a specific device for a specific application (for me when cycling)

Nope. Haven't worn a watch in years and find them uncomfortable.

In addition, obviously the first iWatch will be the ipad 1 of iWatches. I would rather wait a couple of product cycles for the ipad air of iWatches, then i would take a close look at it. After all, I like my gadgets. :)

I just dont get the purpose of an iWatch. I dont see any benefit reading a text or whatever on my watch.

That's really the crux of it. Some of us use our smartphones in a casual way to communicate with others in our personal lives, and others use them (along with tablets and laptops) to detach ourselves from being in an office all day. If you only need to check your phone a few times a day for the time, texts, etc., then an iWatch probably doesn't make sense, but, for some of us, it is a no brainer.

My Pebble allows me to constantly monitor my work texts/calls/emails/notifications and instantly decide whether I need me to take action or not, which actually alleviates my stress. Plus, I think it is rude to pull out phones when at dinner or whatever, and it is unsafe to pull out phones when driving, so this helps in that regard, too, even with personal texts/emails/calls.

Either way, the regular watch market is still a pretty huge business, so it makes sense for companies to experiment with wearables.

I don't even wear a traditional watch. I'm not hipster enough to start wearing a smartwatch/pebble/iwatch.

Now if they made a pocket watch variant with a nice silver chain. I love, love, love pocket watches. Or I could go the Flavor Flav route and wear an iPad around my neck.:D

Isn't your phone already a pocket watch? Because as of right now I only use a pocket watch and it's my phone. No need to have both my phone pocket watch and then other pocket watch.

If I could get a smartphone with a 1.5" screen I could consider it a pocket watch. A regular smartphone is more akin to a clock than a watch. A gentleman would never pull a travel clock out of his pocket to check the time.

No, no, no...he would tug on a chain at his waist and pull out handcrafted time piece with mechanical movement. A quick push on the crown would flip open the cover. A gentleman would know immediately that his watch is running 3 minutes slow. Owners of mechanical (aka skeleton) watches know what I'm talking about.:p

My phone cannot be connected to the network, but I can VPN into work. My boss generally does care where exactly I'm at as long as I'm where I need to be and produce results. My phone is a neat toy that I can very much do without my computer on the other hand I cannot.

Black and white? Wow, I haven't seen a phone like that since the 90s.

You guys are right!

I definitely want one!

And no I'm not wearing a massed produced Chinese assemble anything on my wrist. Either something nice or nothing at all.
Yes but only if it's Swiss made

Yep, feature dependent - of course. :apple:
Yes but only if it's Swiss made with lots and lots of features

Not sure about having a watch as an extention of my phone concept.
There might be situations where looking a an iWatch might be beneficial, but I am not sure it would justify the cost since it is not a replacement.
Yes but only if it's Swiss made with lots and lots of features and it's like a phone but not a phone

No. There's no benefit for me. It's just another piece of equipment to keep track of.
Yes but only if it's Swiss made with lots and lots of features and it's like a phone but not a phone and I don't have to look for it

I have never before wore a watch but still want a iWatch.
Yes but only if it's Swiss made with lots and lots of features and it's like a phone but not a phone and I don't have to look for it and it's called an iWatch

And what it looks like.
Yes but only if it's Swiss made with lots and lots of features and it's like a phone but not a phone and I don't have to look for it and it's called an iWatch and it looks good

I don't see the point. THey seem to be a solution in search of a problem.
Yes but only if it's Swiss made with lots and lots of features and it's like a phone but not a phone and I don't have to look for it and it's called an iWatch and it looks good and it solves a non-existent problem

No, not with a gun to my head.:p
Yes but only if it's Swiss made with lots and lots of features and it's like a phone but not a phone and I don't have to look for it and it's called an iWatch and it looks good and it solves a non-existent problem provided I don't get shot

No. Future generations might but for my generation it's a child's toy. I like proper mechanical watches and my iPhone.

I already wear a "Pebble" which works great for me. However, I consider it a stop gap measure until something made by Apple comes out.

who said the "iWatch" is something to wear? for all we know, the "iWatch" is apple's tv device.

I would absolutely wear one, but ONLY if it was a replacement for my phone.

... Perhaps I should shift to pocket watches, Ive always wanted one ... or maybe Apple could also put a nano clip on it so I don't have to!

I'm looking into health monitoring devices that read heart rate, activity tracking and things like that.

I'm sure it will be cool, but I prefer my real watches.

The problem related to watches is simple: if Apple will bring something revolutionary with this iWatch, may be I would buy one; if I my phone+my tissot are enough, I don't.

Nope. This wearable tech isn't for me. Personally, the entire thing sounds ridiculous.

I still wear a watch because of the convenience, so I would have no problem wearing an iWatch. Whether I purchase one is dependent on the features. A lot of my friends and relatives would like me to have constant notifications though, since I tend to leave my phone in other rooms :)
