There is value in people voicing their complaints ... if Apple is going to sell 10 million of these in 18 months they have 9 million more people to convince and I'm one of those fence sitters. If people just kept quiet and returned them, all we'd get is Apple PR and a handful of easily bought off reviewers. One reason I come to macrumors is that I get honest, straightforward opinions by people who understand and like Apple products. Given what I've heard so far, I'm at least waiting for the first software revision and perhaps waiting for iPhone 2.

+1. Selling 10 million in 18 months is a lofty goal, even for Apple, and if problems like these aren't fixed, they're going to have a hard time unloading that many. To break it down a bit, Apple needs to sell around 10,000-16000 iPhones a day -on average- to reach that goal. If these things are fixed by software sooner rather than later Apple is in for some trouble. There are a bunch of fence sitters for this phone. I am a fence sitter on the iPhone, mainly b/c I'm abroad but when I return stateside my current plan will be expiring in a month so if the Apple has fixed some issues then I'll jump the fence. I'm glad to read some complaints and hopefully fixes will be released soon.

Nothing about the battery is "good" to me though I understand people saying it is good for what it does in terms of functions.

I understood when I bought the phone that it was NOT something that would last me days while browsing the net.

But I also don't think it is too much to ask for a phone to stay juiced from 9am-5pm while using it on/off during the day for internet/email/texting.

I don't use or put any music on mine.

I did just that yesterday while roaming about Amish country. Using Google Maps, calling, texting, and surfing off and on from 8 am - 6 pm. The phone didn't get down below 3/4 charge. Might want to check your battery with Apple.

After reading three pages of angry fanboys i have come to the conclusion that i am still not wrong. These crashes are not because of my specific phone and that it seems to be happening with almost every phone. If apple really had spent their time testing this instead of playing that stupid super secret silence press game then possibly we wouldnt be dealing with this. Now i realize why they waited one week before to tell us about the plans, they shoved this thing out without remorse, and now look at it. The headphone jack is inarguable and so are the crashings. The browser may be leaps and bounds about treos and blackberrys but its not what apple touted. They made it out to be the real internet 'un-watered' down. The problem is that it is watered down, drastically. I would return it but i have this account now on AT&T and i have spent the last week making sure people have this new number. This will be the last apple product i buy however, as i feel truly swindled.

I don't have any problems with safari, or with the ipod recognizing landscape/portrait mode, or really anything else. sorry you haven't had a good experience, but you might consider that yours isn't typical.

[snip]

A lot of the people who bought the 1st generation, really had their hearts set on the ultimate Apple experience. Many, probably don't have a lot of money throw around. While their faith in this product is touching, Apple putting out a defective product is not.

http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1139

This product does some things amazingly well, some things not so well, and some things not at all. But when did a first generation technology product not have some shortcomings or criticisms? You are just over reacting to the mega-hype of the Apple iPhone, but you are being equally guilty of the same in reverse. This is in no way a "defective product".

Hmm, Safari and Firefox crash on my desktop and laptop. Should I return them?

Sometimes it's not the hardware, but the website itself causing a conflict and the browser shuts down. Other times, Firefox on my laptop just quits for no reason.

So i stood in line for two hours on launch day and got my hopes up that this toy would live up to the hype, and i am sorely disappointed. I am blown away by the fanboy response here and how people are overlooking the simplest things that are wrong with this thing. First, safari is pathetic. No saving documents, no flash and it CRASHES all of the time. You can't listen to the ipod and surf because it crashes constantly. The iPod is decent, but it constantly has problems deciphering whether its in landscape mode or not and i feel like when i am walking around with it i have to hold it a certain way so it doesn't go into coverflow. The headphone jack is ****ing pathetic as well! Why is it recessed? None of my headphones work with it, and the belkin adapter is large and inconvenient. The call quality is decent, but so low that people are constantly tell me that they cant hear me, and i have to hold it a certain way. The mail app and the phone itself seem to be the only usable and reliable programs. The wifi on mine does not connect to some routers, and my answer from the people is that it all depends on the router and how it is set up. Come the **** on! Apple says its not a watered down and i laugh historically at this, as that is exactly what it is. Edge is a smack in the face, and unless you are using low bandwidth websites like facebook or macrumors, it takes FOREVER to load. The widgets are elementary and quite laughable in my opinion. The phone function is the only thing that seems to be without problem, and I can't even begin to tell you how 'un-apple' this thing feels to me. I had the original iPod, and remember plugging it into my iBook and everything loaded and i unplugged it and that was it. I had to download software, and figure out how to load my media onto the device because it does not do drag and drop. If apple really was testing this thing for 5-6 months, I am blown away that they did not catch some of this ****. Either they did and are playing the business card and waiting to update it to continue sales, but for those of us that are out half a grand are stuck with a buggy piece. I am also blown away by the fanboy support of this. People are defending it like its near perfect, and it is far from it. :(
Sorry to hear about your dislike. It hasn't been 14 days yet. You should IMMEDIATELY cancel your service and return the device. Really, look into selling it or returning it dissatisfied. I'd hate to think someone thought they were trapped, but you will have $175 hanging over your head if you keep doddling around thinking it will improve for you.

You shouldn't call people fanboys for liking the phone though. Safari crashes on me, but I noticed that unlike any other phone I've owned, I'm more likely to have my iPhone on FOREVER, and simply turning it off once in a while noticeably helps the device's stability (hold down sleep, and slide to power-off). This tip from another user on the forum. Also, I agree... there's some waiting to do on expanded features that make the device feel limited. If Leopard ships and November comes with little improvements, I'll be surprised and maybe disturbed, but I don't see that happening. This is simply the BEST phone experience I've ever had. It helps me get stuff done. Like others, I want more, but I'm willing to wait. At it stands, bugs and all, its a solid experience for me.

My old i850 crashed on me too, when I tried out Java apps, and sometimes when I'd left it on too long without shutting it off. For me... if there was a better alternative to the iPhone out there, I'd certainly opt for that. For my list of "must haves", I don't think there is. I'm done with the thick phones. I don't want pokey interfaces. I can't imagine browsing the web with scrollbars peaking in and not being able to pinch it. The screen clarity and size is gorgeous. I love the photo browser, and the camera doesn't have me thinking my photos are under arrest inside some jail of a device. EDGE is great where I am, and for now, Mail, Maps, Youtube, Safari, Weather, Calculator, Stop Watch/Timer, Calendar and Notes are good enough for me. My bases are all covered. Give me a file browser, iTunes drag-and-drop, and diskmode, and I'll be estatic. I have expectations but I'm willing to wait and see.
After reading three pages of angry fanboys i have come to the conclusion that i am still not wrong.
Your not wrong. Again, return the device. If you're willing to look closer though, talk to some level headed people that might be willing to help you sort out your problems. If not... no biggie.

My iPhone works great. No safari or battery issues at all. Amazing product, worth every penny spent; and that's without any updates. In fact, i might actually be afraid to install future updates since it's already so terrific.

The call quality is decent, but so low that people are constantly tell me that they cant hear me, and i have to hold it a certain way.

So you are saying that it's quiet for other people on the other end of the call, or it's quiet for you trying to hear the person on the other end of the call, or both?

Looks like they do have a built in feedback/diagnostics tool after all:

I have had my iPhone for 8 days now and have used it for almost 100 hours. I have had to reboot my phone once in that period of time and I had to force quit an application once. I have not had any noticeable problem with using the iPod and surfing, though one time, using headphones, I had a song pause on me for no apparent reason. I brought up iPod app and pushed play again and it continued with no further problems.

I have two iPhones, one that gets much internet use and another that gets far less. On the one that uses the internet a lot, I do need to recharge it every night. The other one could go a day or two.

In my home, I get lousy EDGE speed 17k-70k, but in other places around Cleveland I get 200-250K and find that quite reasonable given that it is up to 4 times faster than dialup. Fortunately, I have an Airport Extreme at home and can use that. So far, my home is the only place I've found such poor performance. But I live right on Lake Erie so there is a possibility they haven't extended the network over the water and since I am at its edge, I am at a weak point.

While I don't understand why your experience is not like mine, I can say that everyone I've met with an iPhone (a cool experience in itself) feels the same way that I do. Despite the negatives, we rate the phone as amazing. Each person I've talked to in person, believes that the obstacles we've encountered are temporary and that none would make us give back our phone. But, if you are unhappy, please... Take your iPhone back. But don't make statements that lump my iPhone experience in with yours. I am very happy with my phone and enjoy the fact that every day I have learned even more about why this is a revolutionary device. If you want, I have a Cingular 8125 that I can sell you cheap. Its browser will just leave you breathless... especially if you hold your breath while you try to download a page.

dude, you made your case, so why haven't you returned it yet?

because you are a closet iPhone lover thats why. just like the rest of us, you think that the benefits of this phone far outweigh the negatives... plus, you KNOW that much of this will be fixed in an update, so it really makes no sense to me why you keep complaining. the excuse you give for keeping it is weak. take it back, keep the sim and put it in a "better" phone then. oh, you can't do that?

because you love it. and there is no "better" phone anymore. period.

i have my issues as well, but it's still the best phone/convergence device I have ever used. plus, since it's a full operating system it can do software updates no sweat. which is why most of us aren't panicking over the little stuff.

hope you come around and really start loving yours, if not return it, and don't use the lame excuse from above. it just proves you really, secretly, in your heart of hearts, love it and want to keep it.

let us know when you buy your next apple product.

First of all. I hate all of you who could just walk into an Apple store for days and buy an iPhone.

I am shocked at how many people bought their phones after doing NO research at all. Most of the complaints are about things they should have known before they bought them.

I was quite interested in all of the presales hype and commercials but I wanted to see feedback from real people first.

The initial feedback from real owners was so amazing I ordered mine the next morning. I think I am probably the best target user they have. I use email and the web a lot. I am also addicted to Youtube and Google Maps. I also have a big iTunes library and used my video ipod a lot. I DO NOT spend a lot of time talking on the cell phone but I do use it a bit.

My only complaint is that an online order that was done within 24 hours of them opening up web sales is still not shipping until next friday but they are still selling them in stores here and there.

But it will be worth the wait if I can leave the house with only ONE electronic device that does it all.

After reading three pages of angry fanboys i have come to the conclusion that i am still not wrong.

But the majority of us have had an overall pleasant experience with this phone. Maybe you just got a defective product...or maybe you just didn't really know what you were buying. Either way, replacing it or returning it is probably your best bet.

Also, my cousin is a therapist, and after reading your comments, she believes another possibility is that you are suffering from "absentia dillusion syndrome" which basically means that you have convinced yourself that you have the phone when in reality you don't. She had a patient with a similiar diagnosis who kept complaining of being frustrated with his Playstation 3 which wouldn't turn on....and it was discovered that he didn't actually have a PS3 and instead had just cut out a photo of one from a game magazine and would stare at it thinking it was real, and getting upset that it wouldn't function. I'm not saying this is what you have, but you might wanna get checked out just in case. She says medication helps overcome the dillusions for most patients. Best of luck.

Probably over a million iPhones sold in a week and countless happy and satisfied customers later, you now come out and claim that the iPhone is a disaster all because of your personal negative experience with it?

The truth is that the iPhone is a great, revolutionary product, and it does not suddenly become bad just because of your negative personal experience.

If you don't like it, return it and quit whining. No one is forcing you to buy or own an iPhone.

I suspect that you do not really have an iPhone and that you are here simply to bash the product -- probably on the payroll of another competing company.

I think its clear he didn't get a defective product. He just isn't satisfied with the gap between his experience and what his expectations were. He's also incredulous that most people on this forum seem to have had such a vastly different experience, so he's busy trying to make them "wrong" so that he can feel "right", even though the world doesn't need to operate that way.
Also, my cousin is a therapist, and after reading your comments, she believes another possibility is that you are suffering from "absentia dillusion syndrome" which basically means that you have convinced yourself that you have the phone when in reality you don't.
FWIW, that's what it sounds like to me too and I'm a layman. If the Apple Store won't accept the piece of paper, it makes a return somewhat difficult.

If you want to continue to troll that is your business but I will say this:
1. You iPhone experience is atypical. This forum would be flooding if everyone had your problem.
2. There isn't a phone out there that gives a better internet experience.
3. You have 30days to get out of your ATT account, no questions asked. (this is standard policy for ATT).

Either exchange the phone or cancel ATT and move on.

After reading three pages of angry fanboys i have come to the conclusion that i am still not wrong. These crashes are not because of my specific phone and that it seems to be happening with almost every phone...

So just because people here aren't having the same "terrible" experience as you claim, they're all "fanboys"?

And just how do you come up with the idea that crashes are happening to "almost every phone"? Especially when many people have posted they have few to no crashes?

...I would return it but i have this account now on AT&T and i have spent the last week making sure people have this new number...

You can still cancel your AT&T account and return the phone. If you really want to keep the phone number, see if AT&T will let you change your plan to a non-iPhone plan. You should be eligible for a "free" phone.

Also, as I said before, send your feedback to Apple. Complaining about things here may make you feel better, but it won't help get the problems fixed.

Hilarious ... your name is Fake Steve Jobs, right? I mean, no sane human would take such personal offense from someone's first-person account of a consumer product. I have to assume this rant was comedy.

My experience with the iPhone would best be described as completely opposite that of the OP.

It has exceeded my expectations and aside from a couple of small complaints, I couldn't be happier.
