Billions of Android users, a majority in most markets, “forced” to learn how to customize the desktop, arrange app folders and pages, add widgets, maybe even choose an alternate launcher... and Apple is afraid to or unable to do something to modernize and improve on theirs? I really wanted to see iPad OS do something to better use the desktop than an overblown iPhone UI.

But, those who needs to read this tweet will NEVER read this tweet, I am 100% sure.

Just a side note, Twitter website honours iOS 13 dark mode already.

You’re probably right. It looks like the OP has checked out of this thread and probably won’t read that. Probably wouldn’t acknowledge it anyway.

I’m happy with springboard and see no reason to go hog wild changing it. Apple is known simplicity. The only thing I’d ask is that they have apps orient from the bottom up or allow us to place them where convenient other than grid away Apple it’s fine with me.

You could still place your icon as a grid just like iPhone on you Android devices. There is no reason not let user place icon on the place they like.

There are a few simple things I’d like to change, or like the ability to modify.

However, I’m long, long done with endless fiddling and tweaking stuff. Used to be really into that on PC’s going back decades, and later Android, until I realised I spent almost as much time tweaking/thinking about and researching tweaks, as I did actually using the device itself. I see the attraction, there’s nothing wrong with that, but I’ve moved on.

Unless you jailbreak, iOS has never been and never will be the fiddlers choice, and if it bugs you, get a Surface or go Android. I mean that without snark, it’s just a pointless exercise waiting for some things that will never come.

The OP stopped responding to his own thread after page 5. He did reasonably well, often its one post and then out, while the thread then carries on for a ridiculous number of pages while the OP is long gone and has no intention of ever replying. The mods really should consider closing such threads.

Yea but that’s android not iOS.

And don’t think “modern” is a term to describe it. it’s been that way since the beginning.

Looks like you wanted an android tablet. And that’s definitely not an iPad.

Does it matter if the OP is gone? Went on for 13 pages to have good discussion with others..

Well in this case the OP lasted 5 pages, but often it’s the initial post and they are gone until the next trolling post. With that in mind you have to question the reasoning behind the post in the first place. Is it creative discussion, or is it to negatively dampen the vibe of a new phone, tablet, or OS?

Yes. Probably. :D

The app grid, folders, etc. interface of the iOS and now iPad OS is Springboard. The app switcher is better on the iPad. However, on the whole Springboard is 12 years old without any major improvement.

Unfortunately the are two major barriers to an overhaul and improvement of the Springboard in the sense of a quantum leap forward in mobile UI:

1. Apple isn’t inclined to do so as most of their users are not that techy. The mass market of soccer moms, older people, and even younger generations would not be able to adjust to a radical change. Apple knows this and is likely not going to risk a major paradigm shift that would require people to relearn their tech.

2. Even if Apple were so inclined, have you see. Craig Federighi. That team isn’t up to the task. And Tim isn’t pushing it anyway.

Very good points. In my post when I said Notification Centre I actually meant Control Centre, but the same applies to Notifications anyway. Widgets, Notifications, and Control Centre all make poor use of space in landscape view and even sometimes in portrait view on the iPad. See this example screenshot where two-thirds of the screen goes wasted.

Some simple changes that I’d like to see that I don’t think mess with the UI too much:
  • In landscape view let me keep a single row of widgets (Today View) on screen on all app pages, not just the first page (see screenshot).
  • Let me name app pages. There’s enough space between the vertical rows of apps to allow for a page title, if you want it!
  • In both portrait and landscape view allow more that one column of widgets (maybe even three in landscape). Let us have a page full of widgets! When widgets exceed one column they flow over to the next instead of just flowing off the screen in a single “list”.
  • You should be able to reorder the widgets by dragging their title bar, similar to moving an app, not just in the widget “Edit” settings.
  • Pushing the single row of widgets to the right reveals the multi-column/full-page widget from any app page. Currently you have to swipe down to reveal Notifications then swipe/push right = convoluted!
  • Separate pages for Notifications, Control Centre and Widgets is stupid. Consolidate the first two.
Overall, I think widgets are under-utilised on the iPad because of the limitations described above. With all the gesture controls I also think the iPad has become harder to use for the less tech-savvy. It’s why I bought the best model that still has a home button for my mum; a 10.5” Pro.

I came up with an idea the other day for creating a different approach to folders.

One home screen. Pull down for search as usual. Swipe left for widgets. But instead of a dock and icons create color stripes (user designated) colors about the width of a row of icons. In each color you designate 4 main apps but can add more (up to a screen of apps). You can swipe right on a row to show those apps and then still haptic touch an app for quick commands. When you swipe left on the color bar it opens up the “folder” which is a home screen of apps with the four main apps in the dock and the rest above that (starting closest to the dock). Swipe back right to close the folder home screen and go back to the stripes of colors. Each stripe has a title. Haptic Touch on a stripe for other options? Choose which stripes are in which order. They can continue indefinitely off the screen. Just push them up.
