I can’t believe some of the comments in here. It’s bad even my MacRumors standards. The number of demeaning and insulting responses is shameful.
Some people are still very protective of apple and don't take kindly to any criticism the device or OS.

I agree with the OP, there is some interesting stuf but overall it is lack luster, take dark mode away and it's really just incremental. Hence why they didn't stop banging on about how great everything looked in dark mode at wwdc. I was not disappointed or let down though as my expectations were not high, apple has been incremental only for a while now, the only thing that has blown me away really in recent years has been their pricing!

I'm running the beta but not as my daily, still on a droid for that, may risk it daily when beta 2 drops.

Maybe on pure aesthetics this was an incremental change, but when it comes to functionality, this was perhaps the largest single update they've ever released.

But I get it: if your area of interest is how it looks and you're not a big file user or productivity app user, this may have been a "meh" update.

Why did they make such a big deal about dark mode??

The same reason this thread is ridiculous...the non-stop whining a year ago about dark mode not being added was all I remember hearing!! Why is anyone surprised they made it such a big deal??

The amount of amazing changes in iOS13 is awesome. Of course Apple can implement every single option every critic on this thread wants, but they have very good reasons not to. And most of it has nothing to do with functionality...it’s specifically so you CAN’T personalize it. I know it was kind of a joke above, but putting a Pokémon skin on your iPhone devalues Apple’s brand, because once they open up that capability, it won’t stop.

If you want that, just go buy Android... ;)

I just don't understand why they haven't updated the icons really since iOS 7 or the home screen set up since iPhone OS 1.0 ... unless you count combining widgets and icons on 'iPadOS'

they still look like crap and bland, they did out the gate.

Dark mode is appreciated tho

Inferring that anybody who questions the ios13 update is somehow shallow seems to be the stock response so far....

No, I just think there are 2 super-classes of users: ones who are design and appearance oriented and others who may be more inclined to appreciate functionality, with less regard for appearance.

It is just as bad for a design-oriented person to say there's no virtue in the iOS 13 update as it for a functionality oriented person to say design people are wrong for wanting visual updates to their liking.

And then there is the vast middle, that couldn't care less about any of this!

Still waiting for the public beta so can't speak from experience but on paper really have nothing to complain about.

And then there is the vast middle, that couldn't care less about any of this!

That's like 99% of the population though...hah

As someone that works closely with designers and has designed products myself, I can tell you that most of what I hear in this thread is whining for "change" sake, not design. That goes against everything good design is about.

When something is designed well, it stays that way for a very long time.

Apple has a pretty good track record of great design but typically not for design sake...usually follows some sort of function initially.

oh...and I just noticed this thread...some good stuff in there.

This is the thing for me and my problem, under SJ it felt like it was ‘Build it and they will come’ under TC it feels more like ‘They are already here lets bleed them dry’.

So it feels like they are not trying that hard any more, there is no and to quote Mr Jobs ‘ we are going to do something pretty bold’. They are not pushing the envelope at all which if you’d asked me 5 or 6 years ago would have really surprised me.

I would have had apple down for all kinds of crazy features back then but in truth most of the exciting stuff has been on other platforms and they only come to iOS when apple ‘re-invents’ them. I guess each year I hope apple will surprise me with something cool but they never do any more. iOS 13 is just another example of that at least IMO.

yes, that's it; it's jobs vs cook, not related to possibility, teamwork, reality....

Couldn’t agree more, Jobs was more of a visionary whereas Cook is an accountant. They both excel in their fields and it’s just a shame we can’t have both at the same time.

i have my issues with apple, the mac, ios, etc. but cook (and jobs for that matter) aren't in control of everything; no one is. apple is a corporation, with teams, goals... all tempered by 'the real world': where tech is in general, what's possible (and what isn't). it's all bigger than the individuals (ie cook, jobs); hero worship is pointless... as is blaming any one person for apple not being what you personally want it to be.

Absolutely, not one person is to blame, or to be commend for that matter. It’s a collective, a hive almost I guess (for want of a better word).

But they (read Apple) need to get a stick of dynamite in their collective ass and get a damned wriggle on !

I just love what Apple did under the hood. That Face ID tweaks and general performance improvements are just amazing. Also new frameworks, like SwiftUI, that is really amazing for building standardized layout applications.

Oh yes. Face ID is ridiculously fast now. However, the rest of the stuff you mentioned is well above my pay grade!

If you’re so disappointed and continue to remain so obtuse, just leave the Apple ecosystem. Apple doesn’t owe you a damn thing.

That's the thing isn't it, instead of bleating because Apple didn't reinvent the wheel the whining sooks should just switch to flyblown android and have done with it. Apple doesn't need your business.

It is a cultural thing for me so yes I do think it does come from the top. Jobs was a force of nature and drove everything at apple (and yes I know he did not do it all alone)

Lots of examples of the differences pre and post SJ but the one that jumps out at me is the plus sized iPhones, firstly not sure he would have signed off on the 6+ at the time but if he did you can be sure that we would not have had to wait the best part of 4 years for a one-handed keyboard on it. Keyboards still suck on iOS IMO and why they do not include something like long-press for symbols is beyond me, or at the very stop blocking 3rd parties from doing it.

I am still a mac user (typing this on my MBP) but I have gone from self-confessed apple sheep to being on the cusp of ditching apple totally. I am mostly android with phones these days and did for the first time this year pick up a windows laptop too, still on the fence though as all my family are still 100% apple.

jobs was amazing, but... he's gone. so what happens next? i

f you have issues, you have alternatives (as you've mentioned). i love my apple devices, but have my own list of gripes, and... that's the problem in a nutshell. we all have our own list of how things should be, what should change. but there's no way to accomodate all these individual visions... same as is it inside apple. so we rant on forums, feel sorry for ourselves, then either move forward, or move to another platform.

that's just how it works.

He’s been gone long enough that one can look back now and appreciate him for what he did well...focused on certain products...not really coming up with anything innovative per se.

Apple didn’t invent nor were they the first to introduce laptops, MP3 players, cell phones or tablets. But under Jobs, tech and manufacturing innovations came about that he saw were worth perusing from both a product and ecosystem standpoint.

What leap in tech new product has come out since he’s been gone?

The watch....was that Jobs or do you give credit to Cook for going all in on that? What about AirPods?

Again, I’m not saying he wasn’t a genius, but Jobs was very fortunate to be at the helm when there was a serious boom in tech advances. Things have slowed down quite a bit since the iPad was introduced, but that has nothing to do with Cook. It has more to do with the fact that EVERYTHING has slowed down in tech (front facing big picture stuff).

All of the advances in the past 5 years have been around faster speeds, smaller components, etc. Not glamorous, but I think Apple under cook has done a great job filtering through all the new stuff and applying it to the existing products well.

Enough...
That last comment really necessary?

Why are his wants less valid than yours?

It is not an opinion, this is one of the more open and power users update ever, a real file system? full usb access? functionality to reduce battery degradation? security, privacy and performance improvement? download manager and all the rest, and yet the same people who complain about new animoji now are complaining about lack of icons??? Really? Like...should I take u guys seriously?

Steve Jobs would have never allowed full usb support, a real file system, mouse support on ipad, or a screen bigger than 4 inch, this is who steve jobs was, Tim cook is much more open to give his customer what they want, this is a fact. Steve jobs was done with the pro customers, Tim cook is doing something to meet that audience again.

Some users here are either trolls or simply too young or not familiar with the topic to simply provide an input for a discussion, is not a matter of defending the richest company on earth, they don't need me to defend them, you are not doing any damage to them in fact, it's more that I like to use my brain regardless of what is trendy to hate.

I think he would have given in on this eventually but it would have been different to what we have now. I also think that convergence between iOS on the iPad and Mac OS would have been done and the Macbook line would have been less confusing.

Rightly or wrongly with the price gouging across the board I just feel like apple are out to bleed me dry these days and I never felt like that before, anyway we digress....

I am enjoying iOS 13, it is good, it is better than iOS12, I just feel they could have done better.

So basically you’re mad because the iPhone home screen is still a grid of apps. Yet no one has come up with anything better.

I do agree with you about incoming phone calls taking up the entire screen but it’s a minor annoyance in the grand scheme of things.
maybe he'd be happy rolling through a WatchOS grid gong-show on his phone.

People forget that Jobs almost drove company into bankruptcy and it almost closed. It it “easy “ to start with a blank slate but much harder to improve on an already great product.
Cook is only running the 3rd most valuable company in the world. Just because some don’t like the icons doesn’t mean he is a bad leader. Apple is Apple and they have always done what they want and not what others want
