Let's ask the mods to delete all of the "maybe you should just move to Android" posts so we can get it back down to 2 pages...
Then this post will have nothing else left I think.
[doublepost=1560570075][/doublepost]
or, conversely, they could delete all the whiny posts... which would get this down to 1 page... :D
I think if we count the first post to be a whiny post, then... bam, this post is gone. 0 pages. :p

Wow, after that keynote I am totally let down by Apple for the last time. We were told last year that a refresh was supposed to be for iOS 12 but was pushed to iOS 13 to make room for performance improvements. Now that the keynote is over and the big takeaway is freaking Dark Mode, like that was the most requested item. No homescreen changes, no icon updates. Incoming calls still take up the whole phone as do Facetime calls. No multitasking on the Plus or Max iphones. Like they spent 20 mins are freaking Minecraft? The updated security Im sure is a welcome from the news of breaches. It says you can now sign in with Apple. Apple is just trying to hide the fact they wont be sharing with Google but they will still have access to peoples data. So for people to think they are safe from all tech companies then you must be blind. They finally added swipe to text. Android only has had that since day 1. Faster performance, like seriously, you build one of the fastest chips on the market and you are now only supporting 6s and up. Whos slow? The only thing keeping people on iphones is seriously iMessage. Seriously people know they have better features for the money on other phones like Samsung, Oneplus, etc yet your all now blinded that Apple is the best. Where is Jony Ive? Doesn't he still work at apple?

Someone really need attention didn't they? Hav your coffee yet?

Anyway, aside from the ramble, I think you need to use iOS 13 before you poopoo it and I don't know what features on the Android side you're so hyped about. iOS 13 looks and feels great, even in the initial beta. It's gonna be great as time goes by. I just don't get this dire need for icon or home screen changes. It's iOS, it's simple, and everyone knows how it works. What do we need round icons now?

No its not. Not at all. It is a huge letdown.

I just love what Apple did under the hood. That Face ID tweaks and general performance improvements are just amazing. Also new frameworks, like SwiftUI, that is really amazing for building standardized layout applications.

Is faceId That much better ?

No. It has its own limits as well. For example, one can easily obstruct the face recognition by laying on the bed while using their iPhone or iPad. If the face is too close to the camera, no Face ID for you. iPhone still cannot use Face ID in horizontal mode. The angle of face looking at the device also matters.

I use my iPhone/iPad laying in bed a lot, and it still picks my face up if I partially have my face in the pillow.

It’s definite faster to unlock and it’s nice that we can now have haptics on a successful authentication for unlocking, Apple Pay, etc.

That’s pretty cool, sadly not on me. I often have to hold my iPhone/iPad high and face the ceiling for a successful scan. As for the haptic, no iPad has haptic feedback even the most expensive $2400 iPad Pro 12.9”.

I have it about 7-8 inches from my face for unlock in bed, with no issues - iPhone that is, wouldn't have my iPad that close.

As for Haptic, it's on the iPhone, a new option in Accessibility. Not on the iPad though. I didn't specify that in my post, as I guessed everyone would know that and assume I meant iPhone.

I actually do hold my iPad that close as larger screen allows me to see more content, and it is difficult to browse internet on a small screen like an iPhone too long now.

As for the haptic feedback, I simply point that out. I know iPad does not have haptic engine. As for the new option, in iPhone XS Max I just turn on system haptics and I get that feedback.

The take away here is Face ID still needs to improve. Maybe 2020 iPhone/iPad will upgrade Face ID sensor for better recognition in various conditions. One can always hope.

Having it that close will seriously mess up your eyes!! Crazy!

With Haptics, you don't get the same haptic that I mention, as it's new in iOS 13 and has to be separately enabled under Accessibility.

Well, FaceID definitely has improved for me, both speed and conditions of recognition. Shame you don't see the same.

Hmm, maybe I am also a bit paranoid about OLED eyes fatigue thing. As of messing up my eyes, I admit it is sometimes harder to see items farther away from my eyes. Maybe I just put down iPhone/iPad before sleeping.

I tried to find that setting in IOS 13 but I cannot see one in Accessibility. The only one I see is under “Sound and Haptic”. Maybe that’s because I upgrade on top of iOS 12 instead of fresh install.

If anything, the only thing I notice is the Face ID speed is improved. Faster than in iOS 12. Maybe if I train my iPhone/iPad a few more weeks things would improve. But, no shame for me not enjoying Face ID that much as you guys do.

I disagree. How does laying on the bed obstruct the face recognition? Are you holding the phone/iPad upside down?
Zero issues with face id using while laying down.
Face too close? Face id (yes, even while laying down) works fine within 10" of my face.
It’s easier to just look at the screen to unlock phone or apps than making sure to position your finger precisely on the button.
Horizontal recognition will come. Not really a show stopper.
Angle? I suspect most people look at their devices while opening them up. Regardless, it’s pretty wide. I can put my phone on my desk and it will unlock.

I upgraded from iOS 12, rather than fresh installed, the option is there, it's under FaceID & Attention:

Oh, ok. This could be a new setting, I did not know that. Thanks. :)

I do, hilariously. But even when I hold it right, Face ID can still fail sometimes.

As of the distance, 10” is 254 mm, which is the longer side of iPad Pro 11”. At this distance, Obviously Face ID will work. The distance I am talking about is half of that, 5” or sometimes even shorter, as I have short eye sight. In this distance, Face ID will have a hard time recognising my face, therefore I need to put my device further to let Face ID work.

When lying on the bed, pillow will obstruct part of your face as you lie down on either side. Try that out next time.

Where is Jony Ive? Doesn't he still work at apple?

Well, my understanding from people who know him is that he hasn't really liked working their since his promotion in 2015, which took him away from design itself. And I know first-hand -- having read it in the newspaper -- that Jony is retiring.

It appears he will be starting up his own design firm with Apple as his biggest client. So, while I dreaded what drudgery would be coming from Apple after he leaves, I now have much higher hopes for something -- anything -- innovative!

I wanted to jailbreak back on 10 for the first time b/c I was tired of the home screen Springboard UI. I looked at mods like Griddy or Gridswitcher as better implementations of multitasking. Would love to see a two column app switcher that scrolls up to reveal the list of recent apps. Love the ability to pin an app to the top. The current multitasker on iPhone sucks. And the Springboard UI and grid of icons is tired an extremely unintuitive and inefficient. It has needed a brilliant innovative overhaul next generation type vision (no I don’t have a plan myself but some ideas) for some time. We kept thinking 11, 12, 13 would be that. Nope. Incremental features. Not a reset. The 10 with iOS 11 was a great opportunity. Take out the home button and change the way you interface. That said, I still won’t use Android.

I’m currently using iOS 13 public beta on my iPhone 8+ and overall I am impressed by the changes to the experience. Loving setting dark mode to come on in the evening, shortcuts, battery health with optimised charging, and the photo editing interface. People should remember this is still a beta so will be buggy. It gets a thumbs up from me. :)

I’m running the iPad OS public beta on an iPP 10.5 and my feeling is: for what it was hyped up to be (ie a new fork of iOS specifically targeting iPads) it’s underwhelming.

That’s not to say it’s bad (it’s certainly not) or there aren’t plenty of good new features, but most of these are either pretty overdue or aren’t specific to the iPad. Dark mode for instance, or being able to type questions to Siri. As someone who had their phone stolen recently the improvements to Find My are also very welcome. But again, those aren’t specific to the iPad.

iPad app organisation is still the same as the iPhone
One of the iPad’s main weaknesses—app organisations—still goes largely unresolved. App “folders” that are the size of a single app icon is an interface that was developed for the iPhone and translates terribly to the iPad where you have the space to do so much more; especially the big daddy-sized Pro.

A full-screen grid of spaced-out apps on the larger iPads is stupid. I like the more compressed view that gives me room for widgets, but this view is only available on the first page; the widgets don’t stay on screen if you want to browse other pages of apps. At the very least, let me name app pages so I can do some organisation that way.

Notification centre looks like the iPhone
Notification centre is another major interface element that was clearly developed for the iPhone and goes largely unmodified and unimproved on the iPad. The screenshot attached highlights how ridiculous it is on a large screen. It’s actually a bit annoying to have to reach up to access.

I still really like the device. I like how the dimming feature for Dark Mode, it works really well and is one of the nice touches that sets Apple apart.

The app grid, folders, etc. interface of the iOS and now iPad OS is Springboard. The app switcher is better on the iPad. However, on the whole Springboard is 12 years old without any major improvement.

Unfortunately the are two major barriers to an overhaul and improvement of the Springboard in the sense of a quantum leap forward in mobile UI:

1. Apple isn’t inclined to do so as most of their users are not that techy. The mass market of soccer moms, older people, and even younger generations would not be able to adjust to a radical change. Apple knows this and is likely not going to risk a major paradigm shift that would require people to relearn their tech.

2. Even if Apple were so inclined, have you see. Craig Federighi. That team isn’t up to the task. And Tim isn’t pushing it anyway.

Pretty happy with iPadOS from using the public beta. Still lots I’d like to see improve, but windowing and the too-long absent ability to copy stuff off a memory stick* is great. The widgets on home screen are a step in the right direction, at least it will be when it doesn’t bug out as much, specifically Shortcuts.

Bunged the pb on my old 6S Plus (definitely not on my XS Max), very underwhelming but I’m completely fine with that. For what I use a phone for it’s been better than adequate for years, it’s the iPad that’s been in desperate need of updates. The fact it’s now iPadOS is a statement that will hopefully bear fruit in future updates.

*The simple act of bunging a load of mkv’s onto a stick, then copying them over is so much more efficient than messing with iTunes. Should have been a thing years ago, laughable that it wasn’t, but having dabbled with Android and Windows Surface, not a fan for the way I use a tablet. iPad all day.
