iOS 11 just really pushes these new Pro’s to computer-like heights. I’m not saying anything original here, but drag and drop, files, multitasking, etc all make this really feel like a mobile macOS. Of course, there is still room for further advancements, but this is a darn good first step. I just hope that they keep expanding on it year-over-year.

This might be the first step towards a true iOS/macOS merger of sorts. It won’t surprise me if in a year or two from now, iPad gets its own OS branding.

more ram would make it better for me. i cant open some of my paintings done on my windows tablets because it exceeds the ipad pro hardware specs.

Admittedly i am a fringe use case.
[doublepost=1501181164][/doublepost]oh and OSX would make it my only device, instead of having to lug around a windows tablet and a iOS tablet.

I would love to lug around a OS x tablet!
[doublepost=1501181302][/doublepost]

why do you think to early? these features are all available on windows tablets?

Just a hunch based on Apple's slow adoption of OLED. Samsung and others have been using it on mobiles since 2009 (wasn't aware of a Windows OLED tablet, but may have missed it). And most of these changes are likely to follow after OLED, which is rumoured to hit the iPhone this year. Also 2018 seems early for another gen of iPads as the latest ones just came out, but hey its possible of course.

I totally agree, my 10.5 is awesome. Just seems silly to me that it took apple so long to make an iPad with a keyboard, stylus...er...pencil, file system and all the other niceties that we are finally getting. Apple isn’t always first, but what they do eventually make is beautiful.

While we all seem to want the iPad to be more like a OS X and a MacBook, Apple wants us to change the way we use computers/tablets....Think of it like this:

When is the last time you purchased and played an actual music CD? I sold all of my CD's in 2005 and went all iPod...The iPhone changed how we think of and use a "phone"....The iPad is Apple's next great experiment in behavior modification...

Apple seems to be slowly learning that if they want the iPad to grow as a productivity device, then it better perform to what "power" users want and need....Not just expect the public to use it how apple sees fit (expensive consumption device)...

Got the 10.5” Pro 256GB from AT&T. Yeah, amazing device. iOS 11 makes this thing even that much better.
I'm very impressed, even excited, with iOS 11. It made my new 10.5 feel like something on a different level altogether to regular tablets. Then I had to switch back to 10.3.3 because the random bugginess was really bugging me. It now feels like such a step backwards into Humdrumville...o_O albeit humdrumville with a stunning screen...

I know it took Apple longer than expected to release their iteration of an iPad with a smaller keyboard and Apple Pencil, but thats Apple's method of operation with things. They are slow to release, but their products are so well made and they pair perfectly Together. I would rather have a well made product that is released later than something that s release just to beat the competition.

Agreed, RP, that was what I was implying. Apple is slow to the game, but when they start playing, they knock it out of the park. I was thinking this morning about how my friend was pushing me to buy a surface pro, and I kept holding out waiting for Apple's entry. Glad I waited for the 10.5 and iOS11; it has become my go-to "laptop" of choice (over my 13" MBP).

Interesting. Outside of a few minor bugs, that fix with a hard reset, it’s very stable on mine.

Maybe fewer quality issues would make it better. Other than that, the iOS 11 update has made the iPad perfect.

It's perfect. I can't even use my iPad Air 2 any more. The air 2 just looks washed out now and it seems clunky and slow in comparison. It's considerably bigger than my air 2. The Apple Pencil also works great. I'm very happy with it.

I'm wondering about the merits of making a second stylus that is thinner and a bit smaller than the Pencil, which could be stored within the current Thickness of the iPad, and also charged while inside the iPad... This could be the Apple Pen, used primarily for handwriting and UI interaction. The Pencil would remain the preferred tool for drawing and other forms of art.

I don't see this as feasible or you end up with a stylus like the ones found on Samsung's Galaxy Note series. A pencil must have some thickness to it to be comfortable to use for long periods. Offering an addon that allows mounting the Pencil securely to the iPad would be better.

I was one of those non-believers thinking that the iPad would never replace my MacBook Air. However, now things have slowly evolved to the point where it has happened. I finally took the leap after getting the 10.5 and went on a trip, packing very lightly, and set myself down to commit to the transition. It has worked very well - the key was to just make the choice.

Went to the store planning on picking one up, wasnt all that impressed when i played around with it. Im still thinking about it but leaning more towards keeping my 9.7 Pro till another revision.

I probably wouldn't upgrade if I had a 2016 iPad pro. You still get all of the new iOS 11 features. I only upgraded as I was coming from th iPad Air 2.

Yep I see that. But as you've mentioned, the Samsung S pen of the Note series is an excellent stylus. And the stylus of the new Galaxy Book series is bigger and a very good writing tool. It's bigger than the Note stylus but more compact than the Apple Pencil, and also stored within the Galaxy Book body. If Apple so wanted, they could design an even better similar solution.

Just recently got the Pad Pro (10.5) - my first iPad in quite a while. Obviously it's brand new, but I love it so far. My only (slight) hesitation, is that I got the 64 GB LTE variant, and may, down the road, want to make it my only laptop.... Not sure if 64 GB is enough for that. That said, I've loaded it with everything I need so far, and have only used about 8 GB, so.... maybe it's fine!

Similar thinking here. I have both a first generation 12.9" and a new 10.5 and trying to justify which one to keep. Installed iOS 11 PB this week and wow, it really DOES make the 12.9 a different machine! I still have 10.3.3 on the 10.5 but the larger screen definitely makes great use of the multitasking in iOS 11. Love the smaller form factor of the 10.5 but the 12.9 is a beauty and aside from ProMotion (yawn), and I hate the over-yellowing of True Tone I don't really see much advantage to the newer one. The A9x is a very powerful chip and has no problem running iOS 11 so I don't see the need for all the crazy power since most apps aren't stressing what we already have but maybe the old adage about future proofing comes in here?

Both great machines, tough to decide but those people thinking the first gen IPP's are old or obsolete couldn't be more wrong. They are perfectly capable, excellent devices with plenty of life left!

i would love that promotion and true tone now to be included in the next Apple product, like they did with retina
next should be iphone 8, next all the macbooks and imacs, and, why not, the next Thunderbolt display

Someone above mentioned weather/water resistance like the iphones have. I travel alot and use my ipad pro for sketching and working outside...so this would be nice. Moving to usb-c would be cool too. Other than that, perhaps an OLED screen down the road. I don't know if a completely bezel-less ipad would work...but if they plan to do it with the iphone 8, why not the ipad. Itd be a good way to reduce the overall size and improve portability while not sacrificing screen size.

I went with the 10.5" ipad pro....but wonder if i would have chosen a bezel-less 12.9" ipad pro if it were available. Maybe. But i am completely happy with the current 10.5". Great great ipad. Loving it.

10.5 is too small with no real benefits from being bigger than 9.7". Even 12.9 inch is small.

And horrible cramped keyboard on the 10.5. I would say the worst iPad at its time yet.

Gonna grab the 12.9".

You would need bezels on the iPad because you can't really hold it any other way. The ones on the 12.9 can be reduced a bit though.

10.5 is too small with no real benefits from being bigger than 9.7". Even 12.9 inch is small.

And horrible cramped keyboard on the 10.5. I would say the worst iPad at its time yet.

Gonna grab the 12.9".

Actually i just went to the Apple store and compared the two side by side for a couple hrs. The 10.5" may not seem like a big deal compared to the 9.7"...but i definitely felt one. Just gave that little extra space for drawing. The 12.9" obviously has more room for drawing....and that is great. But i could more easily hold the 10.5" in one hand while sketching in the other. Much the way i sketch while walking about here in NYC. The 12.9" is very unweildy and almost impossible to hold in one hand while sketching in the other. Even in the lap, i found the 10.5" more comfotable to sketch with. If i was at home, and using a table, the 12.9" would definitely be a pleasure to draw on. But out and about, the 10.5" is much more convenient for me.

But if the 12.9" works for you thats cool. If i was getting the 12.9", id get the keyboard. But i much prefer typing on the screen with the 10.5". I have big hands and found it easy to type with my thumbs while holding it in two hands. And while tilted on a table with the regular cover, typing with my fingers is very easy too. Some dont like typing on the screen, but i do.
