I second this! Just saw it appear in Mac App Store. Very very tempted, but it's so new there is not a single star-rating or review.

I'd like to hear initial impressions first.

ALSO.... regarding the Mac App Store, I wish Feral would be more forthcoming in how the Mac App Store download version handles online multiplayer. I mean, does it (the App Store version) even HAVE online play? Game Center integration at least? The App Store description does not address these questions. We are all aware that some OSX games in the App Store have been crippled so as to not have online multiplayer capabilities.

Mac App Store uses Game Centre for achievements.

As for multiplayer it works like this:

LAN Mac <-> PC
Online Mac <-> Mac (Using GameRanger)
Mac App Store uses Game Centre for achievements only.

The multiplayer features are the same for all versions.

Well, that's a deal breaker. Any chance that'll change in an update?

XCOM PC is Steam exclusive for online play so we did not have any options if we wanted to sell the game in other none Steam stores. We support LAN Mac <-> PC.

I have a personal (not Feral) question. Can I ask why it's a deal breaker? XCOM for me is all about the huge single player experience, the MP mode is nice but 1v1 on a few maps was not the big draw for me.

The 100+ hours of single player with upgrades planning keeping your squads alive etc was the draw for me.

Yes, it's the main draw for me as well, and would probably play single player 90% of the time. But I would definitely want to try it with my PC friend. If I'm going to pay the same price or more for the Mac version, then I want all the features (I know the included DLC ameliorates this somewhat, and I appreciate it.)

Since Steam isn't an option for some reason at the moment, too bad you couldn't offer a PC Steam key with purchase. I'd even be willing to pay a small extra fee for one.

I just bought this on the App Store, couldnt resist. Its nice to see the game runs on high settings without a hitch on my 2012 iMac.

I had universe at war and still have it but it doesn't work on :(, so i bought it downloading it now. Based on the system requirements it should work fine on my iMac in the signature below fingers crossed. So far the game is working great on full resolution.

Any initial impressions? I'm thinking of getting this, looks great from the youtube videos of the PC and XBOX versions. I was a big fan of the old xcom games as well.

Anyone able to report how it is on the rMBP?

Full Retina support, in fact my main work machine is a rMBP.

The fps will dip a little if you have EVERYTHING on max but not enough to affect gameplay. To sum up it sure looks amazing on a rMBP even if I am a little biased. ;)

Well I am downloading it now. I'll give some first impressions later. Going to be playing it on a 2011 MacBook Pro.

Is anyone having an issue with the game freezing? I have the newest 2012 iMac with the 680MX i7 etc... and the game freezes about 30 seconds after opening, regardless of what I am doing in the game. I have tried rebooting and everything is up to date...

We have that exact machine in the office test lab (in fact we have every different 2012 iMac config in the test lab) and it runs fine on all of them. Sounds like an OS specific issue but if you email support we can investigate and offer you specific advice. Remember to include the pre game support report as that contains useful info.

Cheers,

I have to agree, I'm running on rMBP, everything on HIGH and it's great. I'm new XCOM, but must say I'm now a fan :)

I'm probably being a little thick here, but am I right in thinking this won't run on my MBP 13" that I bought last year (mid 2012)? It has Intel HD Graphics 4000, a lowly 4GB of RAM and a 2.5 GHz i5 processor...Thanks

WOW! Awesome game, anybody in any doubt as to whether it is worth the money should buy it. Runs a bit slow on my Macbook but I think with some tweaks to graphics settings I can get it running a bit better.

Great job on the mac port guys.

I received this reply from you guys and did every step you suggested... but it is still freezing. I don't know what else to do? I did install 8 gig of ram aftermarket from crucial but I haven't had any ram issues up to this point. Any suggestions?
Dear Customer:

I am sorry to learn that you are having this issue with XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

From the information provided, it appears that your system does indeed meet the requirements of the game, and no crash activity is reported.

I would suggest that you reinstall the game in the following manner, and see if that corrects the situation:

1. Drag and drop the game from your Applications folder into the Trash (if it is there).
2. Empty the Trash.
3. Reboot your machine.
4. Open the Mac App Store.
5. Go to the Purchased tab.
6. Look for the game in the list and click on the Install button.

If you continue to have the same type of problem, there are still a few other things you could try to bypass any undetected conflicts:

Repair Disk Permissions:
- Repair your disk permissions using the Disk Utility - more information on how to do this is found at: http://www.ehow.com/how_5096520_repair-os-leopard-snow-leopard.html
- Reboot your machine
- Launch the game

Launch Game on New User Account:
If this does not resolve the issue, it may be an idea to carry out the launch process on a newly created user account to eliminate the possibility of the problem being caused by some settings on your regular account:

- Go To System Preferences->Users & Groups
- Click the lock in the bottom left corner and enter your password
- Click the + sign above the lock
- Add a new user account - ensure that it is set up to be an Administrator
- Now, log out of your normal account and into the new one
- Launch the game on the new account

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Edit: I took the Crucial ram out and it is still freezing.

Do you have any other games with system requirements similar to this one that are working fine? I am wondering if it only happens to this game but you have other demanding games that are running okay.

If it was me and I knew there was no other running processes aside of OS X itself, no apps, no utilities of any kind, etc. and this one title kept freezing, I might be tempted to have the system tested by an Apple service center just to ensure there is no issue with the logic board, ram, GPU, hard disk, etc. where that is a new computer.

Maybe that is overkill this early but it seems like the basic troubleshooting bases have been covered and it ought to be working, yet it isn't. Meantime, the exact same hardware configuration runs it fine elsewhere.

By the way, how do you regain control of the system when the game freezes? Are you still able to control the system and kill the game or do you have to reboot your Mac to get control again? I don't recall you mentioning that.

Another thought that comes to mind is, are you using a 3rd party pointing device with its own driver? This is a shot in the dark but if you are, does it still happen if you test with the magic mouse?

I should add that these are just some thoughts that came to mind. I'd continue on with Feral support of course and I'm sure they'll see you through to resolution of this problem.

- The only other game that I have played on there is World of Warcraft and it ran flawlessly.

- I regained control by doing (command+option+delete) and force close the game.

- I am using a Razer mouse (drivers are not available for my model but it has worked fine so far...)

Based on your thoughts I will try to see if it works without my Razer mouse... Thanks a lot for the input. Let me know if you have any other ideas.

You meet the system requirements. Should be fine.
