With the XS, you're paying $250 more for:
  • Pro: A dual lens
  • Pro: A slightly better screen
  • Con: A smaller screen
  • Con: Shorter battery life
  • Con: Fewer color options
...am I missing anything? Because I really went in not knowing what I'd end up going for, but I see very little reason to choose the XS, and I'm kinda surprised anyone else does either.

Speak for yourself.

A smaller screen is why I bought the XS. I will never buy the Xr because of the weight and size. It might be a better option for someone else but size is a dealbreaker for me. To each his own. Both are good phones and you can't go wrong with whatever works for you.

Whoever owns one phone is going to slag the other, because they want to feel secure in their purchase. It’s completely normal human behavior and I’d be more impressed by anyone who actively realized that’s what they are doing. i.e. XS owners having the balls to openly admit the XR is really damned close to their XS (oh the horror!), and XR owners able to admit how classy and uncompromised the XS is.

It's childish behavior.

I recommend to sell that XS and go for something else, health first... using something that make you terribly headaches because the return period is over it´s a little...

IMO

Well yeah - we’ve tried that. But she’s an adult and it’s not my call, and she can’t afford to lose several hundred dollars at this point.

All the hoopla about the XR’s low-rent LCD screen, and yet at the store, I couldn’t tell the difference until I zoomed in until a single word (on a website) filled the entire screen. The XS Max was a teeny tiny bit sharper. Not zoomed in? No difference. Photos? They were even more identical.

The only difference was that one had a yellower tint, but I wasn’t sure if True Tone was kicking in on one phone but not the other.

If you can’t see the difference in the screens then maybe you should get your eyes tested!

Here we go again... there are many people that don't see enough difference that it is a big deal to them. Not everyone is stuck on specs. Damn sure nothing wrong with my eyes and while I see a bit of clarity difference it's not substantial at all.

The average consumer won’t be able really differentiate between OLED and LCD, they’re both very good displays. OLED has some core differences, but I don’t think the average consumer even understands what OLED even stands for, let alone its benefits against LCD. What the consumer sees with the XR, is the form factor, all display and face ID with new colors. That’s what Apple markets.

The difference is huge. At first glance with the homescreen and basic apps you won’t immediately notice.

The Oled is more vibrant, it pops out of the screen with more depth and you can tell there isn’t a light behind it that makes the app icons kinda look dull whereas the app icons on the max look like colourful stickers on the screen that you think you could nearly peel off

Last night i played with my nephews xr. I took the same photo with each phone and at max resolution. There was far more detail on the max and the colours look more natural whereas on the lcd more washed out in comparison. I played the same highest maxed out video side by side and i could see a fuzziness in comparison and it wasn’t as vibrant. Even my 13 year old nephew could notice the difference.

That’s my experience and all IMO so if it offends anyone on here my apologies. But no way i’m going back to lcd as good as it is.

P.s if you didn’t have them side by side and just glanced at each phone separately every few minutes they look similiar because the lcd is quite bright.

I think you just totally undercut your own argument of "difference is huge" with this p.s. bit... how often is anyone going to be using an Xr and Xs side by side looking at the exact same picture? I agree that there is definitely a noticeable difference between Xs/OLED and Xr/LCD, even when not side by side, but when not side by side, the difference is not as pronounced and I'd guess the vast majority of people out there won't make a fuss about it. And for the rest that do, it's probably more because of preconceived notions than actual perceived differences in quality during regular non-sidebyside use.

I used to be one of the latter, but have realized as I get older, worrying about sh*t like that is not worth my time or effort, and to just enjoy what I have.

No i didn’t undercut my argument. I’m talking about when you look at the homescreen apps at first, because app icons wouldn’t have much detail, however i get the impression the app icons are like they are on top of the screen whereas the xr looks like they are in behind the screen. The big difference i see is with content that are high resolution like photos , browsing the net, and watching videos. They are more vivid and sharper.

I don't understand why anyone would go from XR to XS, only XR to Max...

For that's more like $350 which makes its 40% more expensive... is that really worth it for so little gain?

Honestly, I think the only reason the XS has more RAM is due to the increased screen resolution, iOS is incredibly memory efficient compared to Android.

The single question is do you use your phone in a way you will notice the LCD backlight on the XR on a black screen (like crop boxes)? If not there is no reason to spend money on the XS Max. I have been personally spoiled by OLED already for years, I notice, so I am happy with the XS Max, but for someone like say my mother she probably wouldn't notice and therefore the XR would be perfect.

My point was you did all these comparisons side by side, right? And then when you didn't have it side by side, you admitted "they look similar".

You mustn’t have read my post properly or maybe i didn’t type it properly. If both phones are side by side and set to the same brightness and you first glance they look similiar , i say first glance. But to my eyes that’s where the similarity ends.

I guess like people notice pwm on the oled’s i notice the backlight on the lcd which to my eyes makes things a little more washed out and not as vivid.

I will quote again what you typed:

Seems clear to me that you thought they looked similar when not side by side. But anyway, this is going on too long... just enjoy your phone.

Also, portrait mode is different. On the XR, it only works when it detects a person, whereas on the XS it works on people, animals and objects.

I was a little worried about this as the (software) portrait mode on my Pixel 2 XL worked great when taking pictures of (full) beer glasses (Even had a couple of breweries ask if they could use my photos). But I was happy to find out Xs works great as well -- once I got used to it's quirks (you have to be farther away than the Pixel 2) and the blur slider lets me adjust to get rid of many artifacts.

My problem is that the XR is just too big for me so I thought I will just get the XS even though it is a fair bit more money.

But then I find out that the XS does not have a 128GB option WTF??!! how cynical is this from Apple? take out the sweet spot option and force everyone to the higher (and much more expensive option)

Now I don't know what to do. I am tempted to just give Apple the finger for this year, put a new battery in my 6S and suck it up for another year.

There is NOT a huge difference and that is my experience based on side by side comparison with two different Xs Max's that I purchased. I am not worrying about offending anyone because I can only go by my eyes and there is no way I am spending $450 more dollars when my eyes don't see a HUGE difference.

You even admit that side by side they look similar... of course they do, which is why I say there isn't a HUGE difference.

I don't think I recall anyone asking you to go back to LCD, we each buy what works best for us! Glad your OLED screen is satisfying for you. That is what it's all about! ;)

With the Xs the size will also be a very big factor in purchase decision, with the XS Max the same only the other way round as the XR is the smaller device.

Apart from that you've got 3D Touch, but people on here seem to think it'll be killed off soon.
I'd ignore any talk about better LTE as very few carriers will properly support it and 5G is just around the corner, plus in the US at least the XS seems to have major issues with connectivity.
This is presuming this advanced LTE isn't 5G though?

You must be one of those people that when they read a comment they only see what they want to see.

Ok i will say it slowly. I said at first glance at the simple app icons where there isn’t much detail it looks similiar. However when you view a high resolution photo or a high resolution video big difference! Period..they are more vivid and sharper and to me it’s worth the extra cash all day long, and i watch high res videos a lot. There is more depth to the screen and content. I hate that backlight that washes out a screen, sorry.

Just imagine how garbage those smeary low-FPS 60hz XS Max screens are compared to 2025 phones. Sucks we have to go through this hell for 7 more years. I know it was super bad all the way back in 2017 having to tolerate LCD as the only option. I was losing it trying to enjoy content, it just wasn’t possible.

I hear ya. I’m looking forward to the Samsung S10+ release. If it’s as good as they say it will be bye bye iphone.

No that is not what you said. Your text was quoted. That maybe have been what you meant, but you aren’t going to convince me and others what we see with our own eyes. Do I need to say that slow for you? LOL

.....and neither will you or anybody convince me or others what we see with our eyes either , the glorious media content on that gorgeous 2k screen, i mean it’s not even so much the OLED vs LED it’s the 1792 x 828 in 2018 LMAO. What bothers me the most the screen is downgraded and noticably from the 8+. Reading this thread it seems Apple customers are settling for this and then people complain why the phone comes with a 5w charger in the box!

So, what are you going on about? Just enjoy your phone and those that have the Xr will do the same! You been harping in these threads for days justifying and trying to convince yourself and others you made the right choice. We get it. LOL
