Iphone12 pro max graphite user Currently using the colour filter option and I have got it to match my ipad after many tests and second guessing! Photo colours are exact now! The brightness hit is acceptable. I really think this warrants a screen replacement program. When I turn off the colour filter the screen is totally unacceptable. I’ve had 2 exchanges and both the same yellow tint. 2020 being a **** year and people buying/financing an iPhone is a expensive decision. This is **** crack

Did it specifically mention that they're investigating the yellow tint or just the green that is visible when it should be black? As much specific detail as you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
I have been told they are investigating the issue with green screens and flickering at certain brightness levels. It has not been mentioned anywhere about yellow or tinted screens.

The employee mentioned both the green and yellow tint. She didn't tell me anything about the raised blacks or flickering issue. It was just a brief conversation with her showing me the title of the issue on her iPad. Her advice was to wait on an OTA update. She also told and showed me that Apple is instructing repair departments (Presumably their own and premium resellers like amac) to not repair devices, but instead inform the customer on a possible fix with an update.

That's all I can remember from the conversation I had with her at the beginning of this week.

After 2 weeks of trying to get used to my 3rd 12 Pro Max, I got tired of the yellow tint and exchanged it for a new one.

Number 4 is terrible LMAO. Everytime I spend time with on my Macbook, iPad Pro, OLED TV, or even look at my Apple Watch for a little while, my eyes recalibrate back to the cooler ~6500k whitepoint. Then picking up my phone again looks like piss.

I didn't follow my own advice and stop exchanging for now - so reiterating: exchanging is pointless right now. If Apple DOES release updated hardware, exchange then.

Was the 4th one from a later production week and/or different factory than the 3rd?

This might be interesting for some. The warmer tone on the iPhone 12 seems more true to life than my Apple devices using cooler LCD (MacBook, iPad and older iPhones). This test was conducted with four Philips Hue bulbs in my room and True Tone on at 50% brightness. Results may vary outside of my artificial lights setup.

I still prefer the cooler tint tho.

More true to life isn't actually ideal.

Content creators color correct their photos/videos/etc. to specific industry standards - typically 6500k sRGB or DCI-P3.

Apple dropped the white point of the 12's to around 6350k on average. AND their balance of R/G/B is measurably off. They've missed the standard and now content looks worse.

You're right on that. I compared my iPhone to my iPad while watching YouTube content and it was an awful experience. Turned on my color filter and it looked so much better, comes pretty close to the whites of my iPad now. I'm satisfied with these values. Whites look better than my previous iPhone 11, but a tiny bit worse than my iPad Air 2019/MacBook Pro 2020.

Edit: Played a bit around with the values and these ones are really good on my panel. They look almost identical to my iPad when simulating a sunset or cool temperature on my Hue bulbs. It's still a shame that I have to do this on a premium device, hopefully Apple fixes it with an update.

Received my replacement.
Production week : 48 (December)

Similar to the first one in terms of yellow/warmer tint.
No screen flickering, no green on black.

Something strange however when testing the blacks. I believe it’s simply an issue with the screen.

If I watch this video with a black screen in 4K, in a pitch dark room, my screen disappears. It’s completely off. As it should be, if I understand well.

Same with this one:

Same story if I view a black picture in full screen - if you go in full screen and then tilt the phone so the bar disappears and all you can see is black:

Same with any other video of blacks on YouTube.

Yet this one, I can see some bit of light.
It made me think my phone had some issues at first, but as with any other video there is no bleeding... I guess it must be something with the video?!

Ok... got a replacement from my carrier ( TMobile Prod Week 47) and its a world of difference! I may have won the lotto!!

Very.. very comparable to my XS with TT off ( with TT on its yellow, except when out during the day when it’s just as white as with TT off! )

Also, no raised blacks!! No green tint ( looking at it dead on or off angle! ) and whites are milky white! Comparing to my ‘bad pro max’, the text on the new ‘good pro max’ is brighter, and sharper!

Ran the raised black video and the screen is pitch black ( just like my XS ) with brightness at min ( auto brightness off, tt off night shift off )

Been comparing extensively since I received this new ( good to me ) one today and even showed it to a couple of friends who noticed the difference right away !

Boot up Apple logo is pure bright white, no green no flickering at all!

Am very happy with this replacement unit and is definitely a keeper!

First 5 of serial : G6TDQ ( good to me unit )
First 5 of serial : F2LDL ( bad to me unit )

Congrats! Hopefully i'll get a good one eventually...

I just ordered another one from Apple.com for delivery instead of store pickup. I really hope that it's going to be a decent one, maybe if it's shipped from China, there is a better chance of getting something else.

I just can't accept using color filters as a work-around on such an expensive device. It shouldn't be this way.

I also have a iPhone X with excellent white balance. But I seem to remember the screen was a bit yellow when it was new. Now it is perfect.

I can confirm this. When i receive my IPhoneX it was slightly yellow but after about half year the colors got better, to the point that it is now better than any Iphone12 i checked in store. But the Iphone12 display is slightly more sharp.

GL!! The good ones are definitely out there! I sure hope you get one too!

One update, in Hong Kong they get always fresh new production from Foxconn Factories@Shenzhen.
Recently the devices in general seems to improve slightly as notable on the demo units. Iphone12 are mostly fine. Not too much yellowing but also unable to achieve the same bright whites as IPhoneX had. Overall those screens are still fine. But all of the IPhone 12 Pro Max have slight yellow tint. No Green Flickering on those devices tho.

In the store, the senior manager told me that Apple is aware of the yellow screen and quite a lot of customers feedback already to them. They will not offer replaces or hardware fixes (yet) as it seems Apple tries to fix this with a software update. They definitely told me that Apple acknowledge this is a (minor) problem, even the colors seem within tolerance levels customers noticed it anyway. They offer the „Tint Shift“ fix for some customers. However they encourage to everyone having this problem to wait for the software update.

Now let‘s see and wait. I compared 5 IPhone 12 Pro Max and all absolutely similar , some little bit better but nothing much to complaint in variances. However, Iphone12 really seems not to have this issue, at least not on the latest demo units. I agree that on the most expensive model (Iphone12ProMax) it is not acceptable to have a yellow screen compared to when the Iphone12 screen is fine (even with TT on).

I have the same first serial numbers. Agreed that this is an excellent panel.

Is the TT still aggressive?

I’m on my 3rd promax and it’s worst than the first 2:( I’ll keep exchanging until I get the right one

Screen on the new ( good to me ) unit G9N
Congrats on winning the screen lotto. In my case, my IP12PM has the same display G9N but the SN is G0ND and the whites are warmer/yellowish compared to my iPhone X and any other devices' screen that I have.

Same story if I view a black picture in full screen - if you go in full screen and then tilt the phone so the bar disappears and all you can see is black:

So, interesting observation from me. I noticed that on the replacement that I ended up keeping (just due to time, since I went out of town and had to send the others back before I left), with Night Shift on and viewing a white or light gray page I can tell that the screen seems slightly washed out on the bottom half, so that the bottom edge appears "brighter" because the orange is a little less intense, if all of that makes sense. It's not something noticeable on colors, other than perhaps that the grays in Settings in dark mode seem to have more green in them on the bottom half and more red on the top. But anyway, I viewed that all-black screen in the dark and noticed that the raised blacks match exactly in pattern/intensity with the above-mentioned unevenness of the display. So it is not just a software issue with pixels not turning off. It's a pattern that's actually "baked" into the display panel, for lack of a better term. It has to be a hardware defect. A software one wouldn't manifest in a pattern that's reminiscent of "gray uniformity" issues that OLED can have.
