Can someone please explain to me what I’m witnessing here?
Please see the video 🙏🏼

Is this the issue of raised blacks? Or what is it?

I only noticed it now, with dark mode on, low brightness, as I scroll up and down the setting, the grey sort of melts into the black... since this is a recording from the phone, it must be software? Otherwise why would the screen represent it exactly the same way as I experienced it?
At thr same time, if software, why only with low brightness?

Apologies, I realise that the video I shot using screen recording only showed the issue on my 12. Watching it on the XR it didn’t show it.

I have now shot a short video using my XR while using the 12. Now you should see better what I’m talking about.

Condition: pitch dark room
Phone settings: low brightness (the lower, the more evident the issue). Dark mode on.
Issue: as you scroll up and down in the settings app, the dark grey overflows into the black. Not sure if it’s a super bad ghosting amplified by the low lighting? Strangely though, it doesn’t affect the app icons, just the grey band.

This is normal.

This is not software, it's a characteristic of OLED. All OLED iPhones do this. Watching the video on an LCD screen does not do the same thing. I actually can't see what you see from the video, but I know what you're talking about.
I see, I noticed that on my XR that video I posted looked “normal”.
I’ve now done a new one, not using screen recording but taking an actual video with the XR.
Hardware issue I can understand, but I would be surprised if this affect all OLED screens? Also, why is it just the grey doing the ghosting and not other colours?
Thanks for your help/explanation

Did you see the new video I posted? Can you see what I described in the video?

Are you suggesting that all iPhones with OLED (or possibly all OLED) do this in low brightness conditions?
Question: why is only the grey affected? Only the grey drags into the black. Other colours don’t do that.

If that was the case, it would make using dark mode in lowest brightness (typical way most use their phones in bed, I assume), not enjoyable at all?

Thanks for your answer 🙏🏼

Is the flickering people are talking about when looking at black screens. When I go into the night shift tab the screen seems lighter black and then turns to dark black in less than a second. If I toggle in and out of that setting it does that.. is that we are talking about with the blacks?
That’s not what happens to mine. On mine it only happens (from what I observed), when scrolling the screen up and down, with lowest brightness. And it’s the greys having some ghosting / flowing into the blacks..

Posting here again just to have it documented.

Second iPhone 12 mini. Yellow/Green tinted display, raised blacks below 65% brightness.

Nice Name: iPhone 12 mini
Production year : 2020
Production week : 45 (November)
Factory: F4 (China, Shanghai - Pegatron-Protek)

Will replace it for a third one. Wish me luck. 😫

Can someone explain what “raised blacks” means? How would you describe it?

I have the black iPhone image in their wallpaper section set as screensaver and wallpaper. Under 65% brightness the pixels won't shut off completey and give off this green shimmer, as if the pixels don't display black but a subtle green, which also impacts the battery life significantly, at least on mine. Above 65% brightness the issue is gone, the yellow/green tinted display stays however.

I tested this on the notification screen. When you tab the display it wakes and displays your notifications. I took a dark cloth which didn't let light through from the bar on the chin and the light from the clock and put it over them, the middle, where it is or should be pitch black, was not covered. Tabbed on the display and below 65% brightness, it was green and the pixels were lit, not off as it is usual for an OLED, above 65% it's pitch dark.

That's the best explanation I can give you.

I can see it and I know what you're talking about. I have no expertise but can at least tell you that every OLED iPhone that I've seen behaved this way. If it bothers you to the point of "not enjoyable at all", I guess look elsewhere.

Cheers, just trying to exclude a defective device.
Will move this question to a different page on macrumors.

Ok thanks, I guess it would be the same with just any black picture on full screen, lowest brightness, pitch dark room. You should not see any light coming from the screen. On my phone you don’t see any. The phone disappears into thr darkness, so I don’t have that issue I guess.

Just tried this myself. Very low brightness, pitch black room, activated lock screen (black wallpaper), covered up top and bottom of screen display elements: no visible light. I've also been unable to discern any yellow in my display but perhaps I'm not sensitive to this issue. Are these two faults directly related, you cannot have one without the other?

Any word from apple if their going to fix the piss yellow grey colours in dark mode?

Big difference compared to other phones, here is a couple of photos note 20 ultra and iPhone 12 pro max.

Love everything about my 12 pro max, the screen is a big let down though. 🤦‍♂️😔

but has anyone seen a non-yellow mini? I would like to try the lottery with my ..

There is no such thing as a non yellow iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 pro 12 pro max.

Apple has either saved a fair bit of money by buying lower quality oled panels, or they have calibrated the screens poorly.

I'm going with apple being cheap and buying low quality oled panels.

I disagree. Yesterday at Costco I saw an iPhone 12 Pro Max with a non-yellowish screen on display. Sadly, they didn't have more Pro Max available.

Non-yellowish compared to? To an iPhone X for example, that is my control as its oled and is perfect to me? Or was just less yellowish than other iPhone 12?

Compared to my iPhone X which I think has a great white temp balance. Also, playing with it I thought it looked better in certain conditions. I was amazed and infuriated at the same time. I'm returning my second iPhone Por Max because of the yellow tint and now I know from the fact that the perfect iPhone 12 Pro Max exists.

Surprisingly hard to believe. I replaced mine 4 times and tested 7 phones. All the exact same tint. Now I have one the still yellow, pro max 512gb. Don’t know what to do. Don’t know if I can still returning and ordering new iPhones forever...

I would send it back and get new one or wait till apple says something official. i would never pay such a high price and dont be satisfied when i look at my iphone, day by day!

i ordered my 3rd iphone 12 pro, and hope the best i get one without raise blacks and without yellow tint.

Yeah, I didn't believe it at first when I saw it. I put my iPhone X (now my wife's) and my 12 PM side by side to Costco's 12PM and it was the same as the iPhone X. No yellow tint at all, deep colors, and perfect whites and definition. One of Costco's employees also notice the difference between my 12 PM and Costoc's and he couldn't believe it.

I am sending this one back tomorrow. Already called Apple Support and explained the situation and told them about the perfect unit at Costco. For now, I asked for a refund and I'm gonna wait a couple of months to get it again. If the same happens I think that I'm going to stay with my X for another year.

Apple will not say anything official I’m afraid.
