4 more days .. before I request a return on my launch day 12 Pro Max.

Yellow/green from day one, frequently piss yellow/green.

On closer inspection it is looking simply ridiculous next to my new 2020 iMac, my most recent MacBook and iPad Pro, my daughters iPhone 11 Pro and even (or especially) next to my old XS Max which unfortunately I sold to a friend so I still see it occasionally.

And all this with TrueTone ON, yes, ON, as its a feature which I really enjoy on all other Apple devices. It makes whites look more natural for me, more like the whites of reflective white objects, which is what TrueTone is all about. But my 12 goes beyond making things look natural, again at least for me.

So I created an Apple Support ticket on day 5, had a visit to an Authorized Service provider on day 7. Yep, they agree, piss yellow, no debate. But they got instructions from Apple to not service my phone and tell me to wait for a iOS update. For me iOS 14.3 seems to have improved TrueTone going completely wild on some occasions, or maybe it’s my imagination.

Yet still multiple times a day I look at my phone and it looks simply ugly and bad, on its own, even more when close to another Apple device. Yellow, green, sometimes piss-yellow/green, washed out colors, weird whites, strange greens, strange grays. And the next moment, mostly outdoors or at least not in presence of much artificial light, it’s quite ok, or actually very good. What is this?

So yes, I can turn TrueTone OFF, but that looks even worse in artificial light, too cool, at least for me. And also it does not solve all yellow tinting. And I can play with color filters but somehow that never looks “right” for me in all conditions either.

And I like “yellow” displays. My TVs, even my trusted old Pioneer Plasma, they instantly go to calibrated mode, PURE mode, ISF mode. This gives them a “dull and yellow” looking appearance for some, for sure compared to their default modes. But I like the more natural appearance of these calibrated modes.

But the iPhone 12 Pro Max, no, sorry, something is wrong (for me).

I’m an Apple fanboy, got convinced ever since the original 9” Macintosh, a customer ever since. But I never had this happen to me before. I’m a bit surprised, confused, disappointed. Apple makes something that I really don’t like. That is a new feeling … :).

And my wife sees it as well, she was about to get a 12 to replace her old phone, but no way she says, no yellow phone for her. My friends see it as well. My kids same thing, saying that daddy has this new yellow phone, they have a good looking one from last year.

So, return this one then. And then? Enter the lottery, so keep buying new ones, returning them until I have a good one (if they are out there) or util I make it to October 2021 where I hope the 13 series will be better? Hope for iOS14.4+ to fix it? Buy an old phone to get me though 2021? Use the very old SE still lying round? Switch to the dark side?

I know, it's just a phone (albeit a yellow one…), so just settle for it, get on with my life, there are so many more important things, especially these days. All true.

But no, not yet.

And if anything, I really would like to know what Apple’s view is on this. I mean, trolling aside, there is something going on here with 5.5K postings in this thread, in other threads elsewhere and others (like DXO) reporting on the yellow cast (even with TT off). Is this bad quality control during a crazy COVID year, or a hw/sw bug, both understandable btw? Or is it by design?

Knowing Apple I find it hard to believe its quality control or a hw/sw bug, so if it’s by design, then … well … then I have a problem.

And knowing Apple, I also realize I will never know their view on this, there is too much stakeholder value at risk by being open about it, whichever is their view (quality, bug, feature).

4 more days …
Thank you for this post, it describes exactly the situation/struggle i am in right now.

The saddest part is this one, i´m feeling the same:

I think apple is more and more developing into a company, that is all about shareholder-value and less about quality. Of course it was a difficult year because of Covid, but: Do you think Steve Jobs would ever have allowed that phones with such bad displays are being sold? If he knew, he would roll in his grave...

LOL Steve was super cool with yellow screened 3GS phones, all the way to current year.

This isn't an oled thing or an iphone 12 thing, this has been going on for 12+ years.

Also..turning into...? Apple has been all about maximizing shareholder value since day 1. Companies balance customer satisfaction with revenue/margin. Thats why they allow for yellow screens - the customers dont seem to be holding them accountable, so why would they sacrifice margin to tighten up tolerance ranges?

Thats why I stir this up every year - with enough people demanding better tolerances, Apple will do it.

NO guys! I’m not trolling. I honestly think it’s just the luck of the draw. However I also believe overtime screen tends to get more white and the yellow warm tends to go away. There’s really nothing you can do to fix it unless you change the screen settings. Like I said earlier, it’s just the luck of the draw. I don’t believe there’s any technique to it.

Just enjoy your iPhone and wait till September 2021 for the new iPhone to be released. It’ll atleast have a 120HZ display. Major changes to the screen is coming. :)

I’ll attached some pictures with white background from today and you guys can compare it with your iPhone.
lol you sure because a screenshot wouldn't show it, you gotta take a picture of your phone, not the screenshot of it. 🤣

How's that worked out for the last 12 years then lol, how many more years?
LOL, right? This is the first year and first time I ever had a new iPhone that had this drastic tint issue and I have had multiple generations of new iPhones purchased month 1.

This is, in it's most primitive form, lower quality control coupled with lower hardware quality, all in an effort to raise profits and increase Apple's stock value. Apple could care less about our 215-page thread.

The only thing they understand is purchase power. I suggest we start wielding it so Apple understands they need to get back to a time when quality and profit could coexist and help Apple get to their former roots, when you purchased their hardware and they knew the only thing you would have to deal with is your carrier's data signal strength.

It was never this bad though..
That´s the point. I had nearly every iPhone since the 3Gs (except the 4 and 8) and i never ever experienced a screen like this. Not on my phones and not on the phones from colleagues or friends.

2 1/2 months and over 5000 posts in this thread of this "major problem" and yet the media, who look to jump on any story and sensationalize it, are not covering this? Makes you wonder if this problem extends beyond this forum.

Loving my iPhone 12 Mini.

right one for me is whiter, but it could be white balance correction of the camera, for example when I take a picture don't show the exact real color of the display.

right unit, hands down!!

Well I have been following this thread since the beginning. I have the same issues with my launch day 12 PM - I noticed the yellowy tinge right out of the box as I had my XS Max next to it while setting up (which suddenly seemed so white in comparison). I have been fretting it about every day since as the deadline for a return gets closer - not really using it, taking it out of its box, checking the screen in different light situations, comparing it, turning TrueTone on and off, checking this forum, considered posting photos of it to ask your advice..... you know what I mean, right? Every day. Every flipping day.

Over Christmas, I compared it to my sister's and my brother-in-law's phones - they both have the yellowy tinge but the difference is that they feel they have treated themselves to the best device ever and are delighted with it. You could say they are deluded but really who is the mug? Me nearing madness fretting over something I will probably replace in a few months anyway or them who are loving their phones and enjoying using them? And yes I know we are paying a lot and should be happy with what we get for that money.

I think I have decided to keep it - I love the phone and I have stared at the screen long enough (sometimes just a blank white screen or white video FFS....). And actually when comparing with my XS, I notice the XS screen which I previously thought perfect isn't very even. I think replacing and checking is something that can go on for ever. I got three XS Max as I thought the edges were rough. Once I settled on one which was still rough (John Lewis wouldn't let me swap any more), I forgot all about it. If you really need to ask here for advice on the screen, is there really an issue? If you can't see any problem yourself, why ask others to find it?

So my advice is, enjoy your great phones. I intend to do that*

*may change my mind and send it back tomorrow :p

Pretty happy with the screen of my standard 12 (serial starting with F17DR), even with True Tone on as I perfer.
iPhone 12 on the right, iPhone X on the left.

Hard to tell but looks good to me ?

pretty bright at low brightness which I always appreciate so you don't have to crank it all the way to see the screen

a bit of warmth and two-tonality in the second pic but not piss yellow or anything as far as I can tell on TT off pics
