I dont know enough about this tool or the four serials, but I believe the 'poor' one is supposed to be poor statistically but there can be good ones. Just like I think the 'good' one is mostly good but can be some crap ones

I haven't run it on mine - honestly dont want to :)

but I do find it a curious discovery if real. especially since teardowns didn't even reveal the panel manufacturer afaik
I feel the same way. My 12 Pro has a nice screen, a little warmer than my 11 Pro but not yellow and very even. If it turned out to be in the group with a greater chance of a "poor screen", I'd probably keep looking for defects that aren't there.

Another 12 Pro, another return.

I got my second 12 Pro today and immediatley noticed a yellow screen. Bummer.

I went to a local Apple shop and saw that my 12 Pro was similar to many of the models in the store. In fact, it was BETTER than some of them. There was a 12 Pro Max there that looked so washed out, I was flabbergasted when I compared my pro to it.

But anyway. There was ONE model in the store that stood out from the others. It looked pretty much perfect.

It is shown on the right here. 12 Pro.

My 12 pro is on the left.

Bummed out. The difference wasnt huge, but its big enough for me to notice. The 12 Pro on the right, in the store, felt better on whites. It was subtle, but noticable.

This picture is taken with my 8, so the white balance isnt quite right. The one on the right looks a bit more purple/blue here than it did in the store.
It‘s notable that the text has better contrast on the right 12P.

I wonder how a software update will fix it. There was such a big variance on the screens in the Apple store today. Only 1 good model.
Probably the same way every single TV has a screen temperature option? That's the only way to fix this, as everyone has a different preference for it. Asking for a hardware fix or screen replacement is futile since there's no guarantee you'll get a screen you prefer.

I asked on my local store and they got a circular from apple saying they will issue a software update, let's see if that's fixes it

apple support online told me that they are aware of that problem and it can be only fixed with repair/replacement...

unless Apple doesn’t apply Display profiles (highly doubt that) it won’t be possible to fix that via software.

Anyone else have this issue as well? I’ve noticed when testing black screen video for flicker, which I do have.. if I adjust volume in landscape mode it makes a grey bar of similar color to the flicker. However, this bar is visible in screenshots with adjustments for brightness and exposure.

Did you happen to note the serial of the good one?

I dont think Apple will give you the ability to change temperature.

unfortunatley I did not.

It cannot be fixed by applying a color filter. Its been stated many times in this thread. You might believe it does, and that is ok, but facts prove otherwise.
an Oled panel is an oled panel. So how do we get a bad display? Was it just improperly calibrated or was it purposely calibrated in that fashion to be warmer for whatever reason? Again if it’s a hardware issue in some people’s minds in this thread then we are saying the display itself sourced from Samsung came damaged? so Apple should sue Samsung ?if it was improperly calibrated i don’t know if it makes sense because a lot here say and have shown different variances. so is this an Apple issue or a Samsung issue?

unfortunatley I did not.
But you think Apple will replace the screens of millions of phones? Hmm...I wonder which makes more sense for Apple, quietly adding a feature buried in settings that alleviates this problem, or admit this is a problem and start a screen replacement program. 🤔

Tried the combo filters + night shift... nothing change in brightness unfortunately

My conclusions...

I’m keeping my slightly warm looking launch day 12 Max. I noticed the warmer display before I even set it up. I thought maybe True Tone was on out of the box. Turning off auto brightness and increasing display brightness slightly makes it look less yellow to me. I still notice it even when my brilliant white iPhone 11 Pro isn’t next to it.

I tried to explain the warmer screen to my spouse who said the 12 Max looks crisper and brighter to him. I was baffled that we could look at the same screens and he saw no warmer tone to the 12 Max. So for my iPhone there is some subjectivity to it. I feel for those who have what they described as piss yellow. Mine just isn’t that bad.

I’m on iPhone Upgrade Program so this isn’t my forever iPhone. Most posts here indicate that most or all of the 12s are warmer looking. If I’m honest with myself, if Apple touted its warmer display during the keynote as being better for eye health I’d swallow the marketing. Without that, I just don’t like the idea of buying a new model that seems less good or even defective. But mine isn’t bad enough for me to return or start hating Apple.

For those with green/flickering and other issues besides the slightly warmer display, those issues certainly sound like defects. For the warmer display issue I’m really curious what we see next year.

Kudos and thanks to all of you who have tried to put some data around the issue or have compared various models in stores. I found it very helpful!
I think i'm with you here. I remember not being completely satisfied with the iPhone X when it came out, due to it's small size and preference of larger phones. I got it anyway and stuck with it for a year, then upgraded to the max. Aside from the size, I loved the X. And aside from the display issues, which shouldn't be overlooked of course, i'm happy with the 12 Pro Max. I think we'll get used to it in the meantime and maybe if they do come out with cooler devices, we can get warranty replacements instead of using an AppleCare claim? Wishful thinking but either way, the hassle hasn't been worth the trouble so far, especially for those of us on the upgrade program.

Going through my own hell here because I ordered another device and it activated out of the box but didn't actually activate, so I now have 2 yellow iPhone 12 pro maxs that don't work

Hearing conflicting things from apple support about this issue makes me wonder..do apple store employees and support guys really know what's going on behind the curtains? I don't think so.. They say these things to make you stop calling.

They may also mix it up with the raised blacks/green glow issue.

True. I genuinely think Apple is looking into the raised blacks/green glow issue, but they probably are not gonna do anything about the warmer displays, since they are technically still within a reasonable variance of D65.

The thing I am curious about though is if the fix for the green glow also reduces how warm the displays are, since as we've seen here the increase of green in the display is what causes the green/yellow tint we perceive as warmer.

What is pretty interesting is that the strongest argument against a software fix for the yellow tint is that not everyone is experiencing it. But seems that green glow issue will be fixed with software, and not everyone is experiencing it...

Also, we might not forget that True Tone seems completely out of bounds and that is clearly a software thing that can even have some effect when turned off due to "not really turning off completely"...
Maybe even night shift

Sooo I just went to the Apple store. Through the Genius Bar the rep let me check the replacement before it became official. He himself thought my display was within normal variance. However, His replacement was way worse than my 12 PM.
My current 12 PM is slightly green and has a low brightness flicker. The replacement was really yellow. The replacement did not have any low brightness flicker. I opted out of taking the replacement because I would no longer be able to return the device.
My only alternative at this point is to return and rebuy and hope for a better unit. Debating if I should just return and wait until next year... Honestly not worth all the effort for a $1300 device.

I received my Apple Care replacement 12 Pro Max today since I complained to Apple that my screen was too yellow.

It looks 99% the same. Just ever so slightly greener on dark greys - but my eyes aren't the best and it's basically the same.

Will be keeping my original but goddamn these calibrations are ugly af.

Sure a warm calibration is 'valid', it's not like 6500k is technically better - but EVERY other screen they've sold in the last 3 years is calibrated to 6500k. It makes the 6300k-6400k of the 12's look gross every time you switch between devices.

I think we've kinda determined that the white point is pretty close to 6500k on these, its the lack of red/blue that gives it the yellow/green hue.
