The saga continues...

Just got off the phone with my Apple Store and was informed that replacement displays for the Haswell MBPs are back-ordered, and that I could be waiting another 5 days before getting my machine serviced.

With my return window closing, I've finally decided to just send this machine back instead.

The fellow I spoke with said that these displays are in constant production, and that I would be more likely to get a "perfect" display by ordering a more freshly-assembled unit.

Very much looking forward to the conclusion of this annoying story.
Maybe it's the universe's way of telling you to get a freshly assembled unit. Not being snarky! I would rather have a totally new unit then having the display replaced (the unit should be "perfect" when it arrives!). But you're rolling the dice.

With ordering a new unit, you do get the extended holiday return period until ~1/7/14 ish.

At your Apple store, do they carry both the Samsung and LG displays? Which one would you have chosen?

Hi all,

I am new here and just got my 2.3/16mb/1TB. Not quite sure if I have a serious problem, it's a LP154WT1-SJE1 (LG screen).

The bottom left looks like more yellow than the rest, but my eyes are going screwy after all this screen staring ... :p

Watcha think?

Did you seriously just post a screenshot? Wow.

If your screen looks yellow, return it.

It turns out I followed your suggestion before I even had a chance to read it!

Spoke to, finally, an extremely helpful and sympathetic rep at 1-800-MY-APPLE. She let me know an order for a replacement would be sent out as soon as the package was scanned by UPS (i.e. Monday morning), and that shipping would be upgraded to "expedited" this time, which should cut down on my wait time a bit.

She also asked if there were any accessories I needed, so I was able to get a 7200rpm external HD thrown in for free! (It's a modest 500GB Lacie 'Rugged' drive--the $129 model--which is what I use for audio recording.)

THAT'S MORE LIKE IT. :D

A genius I spoke with at the Apple Store when I dropped off my (now former) rMBP suggested that I was more likely to get a perfect screen at this point, under the pretense that QC has been tightened up since the early batches. Keeping fingers crossed.

Yes!

I just got my new "checked" Machine and the display is great. I can't say how different it feels now compared to the screen I had. I look at the screen I have now and think this looks awesome compared to the last screen I had which just looked dirty.

So Good luck to everybody and don't settle for a yellow blotched dirty screen. Nice screens are definitely out there and they look great and you will notice the difference immediately.

Catch you in another thread.

Finally have my 1st replacement up and running, Samsung display this time, it looks absolutely stunning, for some reason the keyboard sounds more solid too on this machine, and everything seems faster too oddly. Very happy though, great CS from Apple.

My 2nd replacement has 1 dead pixel. Should I return this one?

Seriously, I can't get a rMBP that is flawless?

My impression is that Apple is skimping on quality for profits. I doubt there are very many of these machines that don't have problems.

This has been the case for a while now. To be fair, these are MASS produced items, so some flaws are expected. Yet, Apple's pricing does not reflect the fact that their products are mass produced in China.

I placed an order for store pick up today for 15" rMBP 2.3/16GB/512GB/Samsung screen and since my closest store is an hour away I set it up right there to run it through some tests. No dead/stuck pixels, and did not notice any yellowing. Only thing I could not check for was backlight bleed, will do that tonight, but so far so good.

This forum is a wealth of information, but sometimes it can be more harmful than helpful. I'm relieved that my screen looks great (at least in my eyes).

I feel the same way about specifically this thread being more harmful than helpful. I didn't notice anything on my screen and I did look at it very closely when I first got mine. Because of this thread, I felt inclined to run the tests posted on this thread. I don't think my eyes are trained to really see the true difference in colors of the grey line test. They seem to change color when I look at different angles but when I look closer they seem like the same shade of grey so I tell myself its fine. My screen seems fine to me as well, first try.

How is this thread harmful?

You either have a yellow tint problem or you don't. This thread has no baring on the quality of your display.

Causes people like me to freak out. I understand that some people have obvious yellow tinting going on but I feel like it puts people on edge as shown by many people just posting up pictures of their screens asking if it is fine. Not harmful per se, I understand how much money I and these people spent for these computers. But as others have mentioned, if you don't see anything post-testing then it is probably fine.

Just exchanged my LG Yellowed screen 15"/16GB/2.3/512GB in store for another one. Received another yellowed screen on left with purple on the right. Also an LG

This is pure conjecture, but I do feel like buying online results in an increased likelihood of getting a machine from a more recent batch.

My theory is that the initial batch of these MBPs was produced in a hurry and potentially suffered from more QC issues as a result. Mine was definitely from an early production run, and I assume most of the models currently found in stores were as well.

Ultimately, this is just a theory and I still think buying a Haswell MBP is a bit of a crapshoot no matter where you buy it from. But I suspect that Apple Stores are more likely to receive several machines from the same batch, which could explain why some people have had to buy more than two or three MBPs from the same location before getting a good one.

If you do not have a dGPU:
Open System Preferences > Display > Color > Open Profiles. Scroll to the bottom. Look at Model.
Sample value (there seem to be several):
Samsung: 0000A022 ... maybe be others too
LG: 0000A019 ... maybe be others too

Mashup: Determine Production Date of Your Macbook Pro

I'm on my 2nd BTO replacement. I was curious about the production dates & wanted to confirm it's "factory-fresh" and was part of the latest batch. I talked to a couple of MR members offline that exchanged their units at an Apple store vs. waiting for one shipped from Apple.

I wanted to share my research to help others -- especially those that are buying a new unit or exchanging a unit at a physical Apple store:

I created a spreadsheet to decode the serial number (below is a screenshot);
  • specifically, I have mapped the "production week number" (e.g. week 46, November) to the alphanumeric value in the 5th character in the serial number that Apple uses for its production week (e.g. "P").
  • With the spreadsheet, you can see that "P" maps to week of 11/11 to 11/17/13. PM if you would like the spreadsheet.

Highlights:
  • When ordering a new unit or requesting a replacement unit (especially for BTO's), these should be "factory-fresh" and the latest batch. :)
  • Find your production week: enter your serial number here. Note: this gives you non-specific date, e.g. "week 46 (November)." Use the spreadsheet below to get the specific date range. Which is why I decided to create this spreadsheet.
  • If you're at a physical store, examine the serial number before opening and unsealing the box: look at the 5th character of the serial number (so you don't "waste" a new unit which Apple can sell to someone else).

There was a Macforums articlehttps://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/16/apple-tweaks-serial-number-format-with-new-macbook-pro/ about deciphering / decoding the serial number (format of serial number is: PPPYWSSSCCCC, where "Y" is the Year and "W" is the Production Week). Here's a summary:
  • "W" is alphanumeric, with 27 possible values beginning with 1-9 and moving on to letters
  • The following are omitted: number 0, vowels A, E, I, O, and U, as well as B, S, and Z.
  • Because the 27 possible characters cannot account for all of the weeks in the year, the "W" component must be paired with the "Y" component to determine whether the machine was manufactured in the first or second half of the year, with the "W" codes recycling every six months.
  • What to take away: the newer batches should have letter "N," "P" or later. Someone recently went to their local Apple store to exchange their unit -and it seems it has slight issues; the production date was September!

Whoa! Thanks for sharing--that's an amazing resource. I'm curious to see if some sort of pattern emerges according to date/week of manufacture...

For what it's worth, my first one with a sub-par display was manufactured the week of October 28th--which makes sense as my BTO order was placed on November 2nd. Here's hoping I get a good one before we reach "Week X"...

I purchased the base 15-inch model this weekend, and the bottom-left corner of the screen was distractingly yellow.

I returned it, and I likely won't be buying another model until the next refresh. Hopefully, the screen issues will be ironed out. At least I saved two grand. :D

With all the known issues, I returned the first Gen 15" rmbp last year several times and bought a MBA for the meantime while waiting for the Haswell rMBP.

This time around, I ended up returning the 15" rmbp again and bought a 13" rmbp which I will also sell after a year to buy the Broadwell version.

Got a great deal on my 2.4/256/8 for only $1249. I can probably sell it for the same price next year :)

Apple may be recycling panels from the previous generation, I can't understand why they're having the same exact problem again...

Yes, people spend a lot for these computers. But maybe you should be blaming Apple. This thread isn't here for fun and enjoyment.

I got my 2.3GHz 15" rMBP yesterday and checked the screen directly in the store. No dead pixels to be seen, loaded a white and a black picture full screen, low brightness, high brightness, everything looks perfect. I tried looking a few more times closely, can't see anything. Haven't heard the body creak yet when picking it up, no other faults/problems/misalignment's. Will evidently keep an eye (and ear) out for any problems, I usually see mistakes/problems very quickly (tiny bit OCD about gadgets).

Anyway, I've got till the 7th of January to return this MacBook so enough time :)
