Slight Yellow Tint - Screen Bleed (Newegg Ebay Dump)

Purchased a new Macbook Pro Ret 15 Inch during the Newegg Ebay sell off ($1699 no tax). Great deal but had a surprise with the screen.

Slight yellow tint in the bottom right and magenta on the left but overall a beautifully bright and very white screen. I was happy with that due to the price until I saw the screen on a black background while using full screen youtube.

Screen Bleed at the top left extending down vertically and horizontally approx 25%. I've attached two pics and the reality is between the two. One is at full brightness and the other is at half brightness.

Question for you, do you think it is worth the runaround to try to get a screen without the bleed or do you think based on the price I got it for I should just chalk it up to a good deal on a slightly defective screen?

I'm not sure why Newegg would dump new 15 inch stock at the refurb price other than possibly getting rid of screens they know to be defective? Who knows?

I've heard of people in the repair/exchange loop and I don't want to be one of them.

Thanks!

It would be nice to see a comparison photographs with two displays in the shot to see how much yellowing there is. If your description is accurate, I would say you got one of the better displays if it's true that the yellowing is limited to one small region. If you exchanged it you could get yellowing all over the display with no region looking good. Keep it.

There is a legend that says there are evenly yellowish Retina displays and evenly blueish Retina displays. I don't know if they exist, but I'll try bravely exchanging until I find a good one.

Received a unit with LP154WT1-SJE1 that was built last week.

All good except gradual yellow tint towards the bottom upon close observation.

What would you do?

Not new, these new rMBP is a shame.
Can we see some shots of the display? I would personally get a replacement or a refund, would not avocet 3rd grade quality for 2k laptop.

Just got my laptop at the AASP after its 3rd replacement (bought my rMBP on Dec-18-2013). It's the fourth screen I got and has the following specs second that ioreg command:
Code:
ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6
Color LCD
LP154WT1-SJA2
DCN3393066KFDR4AH

Not really even, but looks a bit less worse than the previous one I got. Anyway, it seems that Apple Brazil has a ton of SJA2 screens and will take a while until they get rid of all these old yellowish displays. Don't know yet if I'll ask the consumer rights officials for a cash return by Apple or try an entire machine replacement... or maybe even I'll be stuck with this computer and never buy another Apple hardware again.

Throw this at apple and get a refund. Yellow screen on a 2k display is just not acceptable.

Actually I paid USD 3K... or, using other indexes:

2467 espresso shots (good quality coffee beans).

422 all-you-can-eat lunches (good ones, with pure extravirgin olive oil, fruits and real meat, salmon, etc).

10 brazilian minimum wages.

The dream is over. To me, Mac x PC or OSX x Windows became a matter of religion.

Hello there,

Tommorow is my last day to ask for a refund for my new Rmbp 15 inch. It has the samsung display LSN154YL01-A01.

Unfortunately, there is a slight yellow shadow in the center of the screen. It's not really annoying but it's noticeable (My wife says it's almost invisible to her). I see it even more clearly when the computer is booting up with the grey backgound and the apple logo.

Should I return this computer just for this? I know the yellow tint issue thread, people got 3-4-5 screens and all of them experienced some yellow tint issues....now, i need a computer to work with, my old one died.

Are they going to ask me anything if I want a refund at the Apple store? If I decide to get a refund, should I erase everything that I put in it (music mainly?)

Is there a chance of getting a better screen buying online and directly from China? Or ask for a new computer at the same Apple store?

As anyone got a perfect screen after asking for replacement? Are my hopes too high? I don't want to end up with a worse computer.

Thank you for your help.

It's strange to see all those questions of should I return/exchange. Why would you rely on strangers' opinions on your big purchase item? If it bothers you, go ahead and return/exchange. A computer is just a tool (an expensive one mind you) and if you can live with it and feel like it's better to spend your energy on something that matters in your life, keep it.

It is a tool indeed, but after paying almost $3000 and seeing a yellow spot in the middle of the screen is what I call a little quality control problem. Why can a $500 dell computer or even Acer computer produce even white screens??

...& I've never been happy with brightness level. Even if I put it right up to max it's "just" bright enough, but I prefer to keep it a few notches below that, just coz I'm a bit paranoid.

Oh FFS anyone?
I've bumped this a gazillion times now & not one person can spare a min. to confirm if it is or isn't an issue for you?

Can the brightness of it (the keyb) really affect the appearance of the display? I guess if it was at max it could due to excessive ambient light, I've tried turning mine completely off for a while.

This I kinda already know the answer to, but still, it'd be nice if someone could add their thoughts.

Thank-you, & sorry for the exasperation.

I went through five units. I can comment.

1st unit = Really super bright, couldn't have it on highest brightness without hurting my eyes and causing headaches.
2nd unit = bit dim, needed it at 100% brightness and even then it felt low.
3rd, 4th, 5th units = Perfect brightness at 100%.

So I would say there is some variety with the lighting.

That is correct. I returned all five for screen issues. I think four of them had yellowing and one had a dark shadow problem.

I'm now waiting for the next revision and hoping they fix the problems by then.

The iMac also has a yellow screen from what I have seen. So I think Apple will start to refuse exchanges at some point by saying it's normal.

I wouldn't bother with the exchange game just for the screen alone because I have seen alot of rMBP in stores with the same "yellow screens". It's a lottery and the odds are not good that you get a perfect unit.

At least you can return them easily, so you can get your money back... I'm on my fourth screen and the only option I have is asking for another uneven yellowish display...

Thank-you!

Brightness & comparatively mild (but still disappointing) IR are the only issues I've detected, but there's 1-2 tests I still haven't done yet.

Any thoughts on the 2nd point in my post?

Here's a datapoint --

I just bought a 15" BTO, it came with an LG screen, and it definitely is dimmer than I feel comfortable with.

At max brightness, it is much worse than my several-years-old 17" MBP with the TN screen. Interestingly, it is even dimmer than the 2012 13" rMBPs we have here (though to my knowledge, LG manufactures all those screens, too?) The dimness may be the manufacturers way of trying to prevent image retention. I have no idea.

In any event, it is going back to Apple, as the LED will only get dimmer with time, and I don't think having to squint is a reasonable tradeoff in a $3000 computer.

Hopefully some folks at Apple have taken a close look at the new IGZO screens (the Dell XPS 15 is incredible-looking, but the thought of running Windows 8.1 is stomach-turning.)

Mid-2012 rMBP? What week? And what batch/week/rev. LG panel?
My mid-2012 rMBP was very late 2012, can't recall what exact week OTTOMH.
I knew the batch/rev. of my LG panel, but I can't find that info. right now.

Cheers.
