Sad that this is still going on. For those new to the thread, I went through 4 replacements for a machine with yellowing in the corners of its screen. First 2 had yellow in the corner of the screens, third made buzzing sounds, and fourth again had screen issues. I had to take the 3rd and 4th apart and swap screens to get a good machine. Absolutely insane.

I do not recommend anyone buy the current generation. This is what I tell my friends and what I advise the non-profit I am a trustee of.

I am no longer convinced Apple can make computers. I think the outsourcing and endless drive to raise margins may be the end of Apple.

Outsourcing is the stupidization of the labor force. No one really knows what is happening in the whole, so there are many points of failure where the interfacing between services occurs.

I have one thats got uneven yellowing. I had one previously that was pretty much uniform yellowing. Something about the backlight.

Kind of shoddy, but I got used to it. At first I was appalled really. Then I got used to it. No problem.

I'm just really glad it's not a friggin toaster like the last quad MBPr I had. I really hated that and never got used to it. This one actually has a cool surface as I type this now, and it's a bit warm in here.

I have an otherwise perfect 15" machine that I absolutely love and have no patience to go through the return/replace game. I have the Samsung SSD with excellent performance,

I do have a slight yellow patching/tinting on both the bottom corners enough that I notice it while I'm reading PDFs on a white background.

MY question is this: Are there any screens out there better than this, or is this about as good as it gets? I'm posting a quick shot at about 5-6 bar of brightness levels. (That's my typical brightness level for reading).

How likely am I to get a good screen with a replacement?

Thanks!

In the sense of color uniformity and brightness uniformity, I think screens suffering from image retention look better than rentention-free displays. It's up to you decide between image retention and a screen like yours or like mine.

In other words: it's better not entering the exchange lottery.

That's unfortunate. :(

I see no Image Retention, so that is consistent with your observations.

I'm still trying to convince myself that the yellowing around the bottom corners isn't a big deal. But I do notice it.

I wonder if with time:

a) You get used to it.
b) It goes away.

Just go to various Apple stores and compare it against 10+ machines.

That sounds like a lot of investment of time. I think I'm just going to spend a day or two deciding if I want to keep it or return it.

I don't have the patience to play the lottery. I may end up purchasing a Thinkpad or an M3800.

runs very very warm. only 7.5hrs battery life.

the base rMBPs i had previously didn't run as warm and had much better battery life

Reading PDFs is annoying at the first time, but currently I practically got over the yellowish bottom issue. I think that the most satisfied consumers with the rMBP are gamers and people that watch a lot of videos. If you deal with image processing or text reading, it's not the best screen you'd want to have.

Those, unfortunately, are among my two main use cases. :( I have returned this one and placed a new order. Couldn't agree with the blotchiness. I kept trying to convince myself that I could get used to it, but I kept noticing it every time I glanced at that part of the screen (which was a lot if you read full screen) and also while browsing.

All that said, it's sad that one has to convince themselves to be forcefully okay with a computer that costs about $2k. I really didn't want to come here and crib about this, but this issue is real.

Some of you guys posting pictures have some serious issues with your screens, but quite a large minority are posting pictures with, to my eye, absolutely nothing wrong with them. Some of your laptops have things which you are *only* going to notice in environments with no light and on either white, grey or black screens.

I hope to God I never become as attuned as you lot to 'light bleed', either, because it sounds horribly painful.

Being a graphic designer must suck - you guys really need perfection and *will* be attuned.

Either way, I intend to buy a rMBP towards September, Broadwell or not. I just hope I don't hit the issues some of you lot have. Is there any noticeable difference between the quality of the 13" and 15" screens? Looking through this thread, many people have been buying 15" and there isn't *that* much coverage on 13" screens, though they do seem to have their own problems.

Do I buy a MacBook Upgraded 8 gig from MacMall Or rMacbook Pro with discount $150 from BestBuy? They are within the same price range given -+$100. I would get the retina but I am concerned about all of the talk about the retina screen problems. Help, I am on my way to the store!

I would get the retina. The screens are outstanding.
Although you see a relatively lot of complaints about the screens on here, when you consider the number of rMBPs sold to the number of complaints you will realise it is a tiny minority with problems.

Consider that some of us had 5-10+ units and all of them had yellowing I would say this is incorrect.

What is really happening is most people don't care / don't have eyes good enough to discern the yellow tint problem.

Has there been problems with 2014 manufactured 15'' Retinas? I would like to buy one used, ME294 with 750M. Its serial number is ''ML'' so it has been made 2014, april and week 17. I don't know if it has Samsung's or LG's screen. Does it even matter anymore? Is it safe to buy? The package is unopened so there is no information, if the screen is OK or not.

The thing is, most Mac consumers live in the USA where Macbooks are affordable, i.e., a monthly wage of most employed adults can match the price of a 2.3GHz/750M/16GB/512GB rMBP. In Brazil, for example, this rMBP costs around USD 5000,00, so people who buy retina macbooks really need some of its advertised features. Otherwise, they buy consumer Dells, Lenovos, HPs or even a base Macbook Air.

That is, in USA most people who aren't really "prosumers" buy rMBPs just looking for an "entertainment funstation" for gaming, netflix, iStuff integration and so on. Of course there are a lot of people who use a rMBP as a mobile workstation but they're a minority. So, I tend to think that 90%+ of Retina displays suffer form uneven yellowing, but only 1% of consumers are aware of the issue.

If some of these guys are going through multiple screens, that is not an isolated problem. The problem is that the acceptable range to the oem is not equivalent to the acceptable range to these buyers. My notebook is one of the 17" models. I can tell you it's nowhere near perfect. For anything important I would use my external display.

Second round with the lottery and still no luck.

The screen looks like the center third of the screen is a yellow layer compared to the top and bottom thirds.

Also, there's a dark rectangular patch on the bottom right toward the center of the screen and a dark area near the top right side.

Reluctantly sending this back. Think I've wasted enough time with these. It's either going to be a macbook air or another brand now. Really wanted a nice 15" laptop.

Sorry for the rant, I know nobody cares, it's just heartbreaking that such a beautiful machine and a beautiful experience is marred by this issue.

Good luck to all playing the lottery.

Just out of curiosity (and perhaps hope), is there anyone in this thread who has finally got a good screen after playing the lottery?

I didn't go through the whole thread, so please forgive me for not checking.

Any pics would be appreciated. Thanks!

You won't find perfect screens in consumer displays. However my screen is pretty good after comparing it to alot of other machines.

I don't expect perfect displays from these, but I just can't get over the fact that a Dell Latitude WLED 1920x1080 is bright even and crisp next to this 'dirty' looking screen.

Would you be so kind to post two pictures of your screen with a white photo full screen?

http://www.solidbackgrounds.com/2880x1800-white-solid-color-background.html

One at about 5-6 bars of brightness and another at about 10-13, please! Thank you very much.

I badly want to keep the rmbp 15, if anyone has won the lottery I might do one more exchange before calling it a day.

Just got my 15-inch rMBP on June 10. Noticed out-of-the-blue (wasn't specifically looking for it) that there's two spots of light bleed on the right side of my screen on black backgrounds. Ran a script in Terminal that gave me some info on the display; it was A01 or something, which I think is Samsung. I'm debating on whether I should take it in and exchange it, as everything else seems perfect, other than the light bleed. Don't want to end up playing the exchange lottery and getting a worse unit. I had plenty of problems with PCs which is why I switched back to Apple.

I'm assuming that light bleed is somewhat of a given on these displays. No display can absolutely perfect. I'm hesitant with paying the exchange lottery because I had the same light bleed issue with a Nexus 10 tablet, and it became a huge ordeal that couldn't get resolved.

It's bugging me right now since I just got the computer, but I might just wait it out since I have 362 more days to exchange it... Lol. Any thoughts?

If the only problem is slight backlight bleed and not yellow tint or image retention, then if you exchange it you will probably get one with bad colours or dark-yellow regions in the lower left or colour gradients or whatever else Apple thinks is acceptable on a 3 thousand dollar computer.

Yeah very good point. It's definitely noticeable, but only on dark backgrounds. Thanks for the reply Shmanky. Don't think I'll be exchanging unless I notice something worse or it continues to bug me.

I agree that this is kinda ridiculous. The whole reason I switched back to Apple was to avoid issues like this that plagued my last PC, and even Android phones (I have an iPhone 5s now lol). I had no idea this was such an issue until I searched for it. Luckily there's a year warranty, and an Apple store five minutes away from my house. I'll admit that it's convenient to be able to take it in and get a new one right away, which is something that I couldn't do with any non-Apple devices I owned.

End rant haha
