If people are angry with the 2021 update (only due to software), why aren’t they more angry with the 2018 -> 2020 changes? Apple literally just added a graphics core, a camera and LIDAR scanner and named it a new generation.

I think it is mainly because of the huge upgrade in hardware performance with the 2021 change. Adding the M1 chip and all the extra RAM really got people excited at the possibilities. The 2020 change was simply released on Apple's website without any fanfare if I remember right. I think people were okay with the minimal changes since it was very low key.

They had a keynote for that, too. I recall watching the LiDAR stuff.

Tbh, I don’t even remember the keynote for that. Perhaps, I wasn’t really concern with the 2020 model at the time… given the leaks.

It’s more to that… iPadOS hasn’t seen a huge update in quite a long time. It’s as if the stars were align to bring a special feature to M1 iPP users, I woulda took anything…tbh. Multiple audio streams simultaneously… virtualization support, give us something to take advantage of this hardware.

But, nope… nada.

What exactly did you expect ? It is still a mobile device. When’s the last time Microsoft has brought something earth shattering to a desktop ?

No. Ipad Pros 2020 were introduced only through press release (twitter tweet), there was no conference.

And no, I did not buy iPad Pro 2018 and then 2020 next year. It would be really stupid.

I heard there are multiple audio streams in the beta. It’s just it doesn’t look like you need the M1 to use it.

Virtualization would have blew my mind. That’s a Pro feature right there.

Ah yes, that was the one that got gobbled up by COVID. I seem to recall lockdowns started around March in the US. I probably confused it with the iPhone 12 keynote or maybe just saw an ad showing off LiDAR.

Hindsight, low-key press release was probably a good thing. That was such ho-hum update hardware-wise.

Mobile device? Not sure what that even means. But I believe I mention what kind of features I expected... features that can take advantage of the hardware. Wasn't looking for anything earth shattering.

Personally, don't really care about quad-speakers or ProMotion (and I've had those since 2016 & 2017 respectively).
I’ve had both since 2017 and rarely listen to my iPad without headphones or other speakers and really don’t notice the difference in ProMotion and my non-ProMotion devices.

Yeah, I seen a few post regarding that. But I think its a bug... I wasn't able to replicate it in the beta. And in addition to that, it would of been something Apple would of announced.

I believe Apple would need to revamp the volume slider to handle different audio streams from various apps... similar to how Samsung does it with their Sound Assistant feature.

I understand what a mobile device means... just didn't understand in the context that you meant. It's as if you were trying to belittle the idea of having an iPad.

(fixed some typos sorry)
I don’t think people are angry with the 2021 IPP (only due to software). It’s more that they spec’d out the 2021 IPP (ie with 8 gb ram, thunderbolt connection and an M1). That leads people to rightly speculate that Apple is setting the stage for the IPP to “break out”. What did WWDC bring? Not much! So, people that bought the 2021 IPP at launch are kind of in a strange place. They’re stuck with the best iPad Apple has ever made, but the can’t use It to it‘s full potential!

I‘m an 11 inch IPP guy and if they’d updated the display tech on the 11 inch, I’d have jumped at it and been happy that I had an iPad that would serve as a solid and capable platform for the foreseeable future. I’ll sit tight one more yr with my 2018 IPP...and see if they update the display On the 11 inch. That will be the one to keep for a while!

Agree that is what his post sounded like. Anyone trying to equate an iPad Pro with a freaking phone, especially when the IPP now has identical hardware to the Mac Mini, the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro and the iMac 24” is being pedantic and silly.

Laptops are every bit as ‘mobile’ as an iPad 12.9”

Only your expectations, I’m afraid.
Base on WWDC from 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017... Yeah this one was a major letdown. Honestly, EVERYTHING they said could have just been in a press release. Nothing that exciting.

I typically take a half day or full day off during WWDC because, historically, they have been VERY GOOD and I used to research/discuss for hours after the event. This year, I was disappointed I had the day off. Such a let down, and immediately after the event I just did something else, nothing much to discuss.

It rarely does make much financial sense to upgrade from the n to the n+1 version of anything.
Except, the n (2020 iPad) and n+1 (2021 iPad) had, at the higher config, a jump of 12 GB of RAM - 2020 iPad only had 6GB of RAM where the 2021 iPad higher config has 16GB of RAM. Yet, iPad OS did not introduce new ways to utilize that RAM.

If iPad OS actually made use of the 16GB, then yes, the n+1 would have been a worthy upgrade.

Not yikes at all..

With iOS 15 and Xcode cloud we are one step closer to getting Xcode on the iPad.
Xcode Cloud was really the only thing that was exciting to me. As someone that uses Azure DevOps and likes the whole CI/CD pipelines, it was nice to see on the Apple side too.

Yeah a laptop (especially an ultra portable and/or a convertible) blurs the line between a desktop computer and a mobile device, and can do some spectacular things. Look at the original MB Air (or the Surface Pro line). The iPad Pro has the hardware specs to do so too, but the software is lacking.

Do people really notice the difference between promotion and regular refresh? I never once have moved from my iPad Pro to iPhone and thought "OMG - scrolling in Safari is so choppy on iPhone compared to iPad Pro"

As someone that uses a 144Hz monitor and my iPad a lot, yes I can tell a difference with my phone. I can even tell a difference with my 60Hz monitor right next to me and all I do is move my mouse slowly. I can tell its jumpy on 60Hz vs 144Hz.

What good is that for iPad, if all you can do is play candy crush and edit your memoji ?‍♂️?
Well in regards to iPad, then yeah its been the same since 2017. But in regards to your specific comment, you made it seem like Apple in general has not innovated recently. But not talking about the M1 in the iPad, just M1 in general is a massive innovation. And the fact that the M1 Mac mini competes with my 2019 i9 iMac is massive.

People here really need to understand the difference between an app and an operating system. FCP and Logic was not on the table at this event as is appropriate! This WWDC keynote was hardcore demonstrations of API, security and programming apps and where the Apple ecosystem is moving. Self proclaimed "Pro" not being programmers were not catered for and rightly so!
Developers will not take iPad more seriously if Apple doesn't. Having professional software from Apple, will increase professionals using iPad which will lead to more developers making more professional software. As it STILL stands, iPad is just a slightly enhanced iPhone.

Plus, Apple announced both updates to the OS and apps at WWDC.
