If you got it at launch the return window closed this past Friday. I'm going to call and see what I can do to return my loaded 2021 M1 iPP 12.9 with 1TB....
They unofficially can extend it up to 30 days after date of purchase. I considered exchanging mine for a 256GB one but I think 128 is going to work. I mostly keep things in the cloud.

My exact thought when I was watching!:D

For me personally I was not expecting a merge to MacOS, but rather some more special features that are M1 and up exclusive, but I think Apple did us all a favour by giving the 2021 iPad Pro the M1 but also not giving too much that it makes everything else before it super outdated.

Someone who is looking to buy a brand new iPad Pro right now should without a doubt buy the M1 iPP, Apple have literally made the greatest of the already great.

It was a pretty abysmal update. Mostly just catch up to iOS 14. I’m excited for the multitasking update though. My biggest pet peeve to the current iOS 11-iOS 14 multitasking interface for iPad is that they removed the ability from iOS 10 multitasking to see your entire list of apps when trying to do split screen.

In iOS 11-iOS 14, you have to completely close out of the app and find the one you want to multitask it with on your Home Screen if it’s not already in your dock, open it, and then go back to the app you were first in, and then do split screen. Feels very clunky and inefficient. iOS 15 seems to fix that problem which is great.

Safari updates, especially browser extensions, seem like a great update as well.

I'm not sure why everyone gets jacked up and upset about an event like this. The little things now lead to bigger things in the future. The new multitasking on ipados is solid, and the integration of better health features is incredible. It was only a year ago that they completely upgraded iOS, and we have gotten so many new hardware upgrades over the last year, it was time for a break.

I'm happy with the event.
I agree. What Apple announced, especially with Do Not Disturb changes and Universal Control, are very nice updates. I feel like this year they added what they could to better support the work-from-home culture, which was much needed. I'd rather they have more resources dedicated to bug and security fixes.

Agree with that - that Apple invested in Universal Control (which is a cool feature) tells you they *never* want your iPad to replace your Mac - they want it to compliment it, which is fine, except iPad has become a very very costly "companion" to the Mac. I just need to readjust my expectations and never get duped into buying more iPad memory/storage then I'll ever need.

Financial sense?

I upgraded for a 50% speed boost and the ability to SEE HDR content on the screen. That's pretty good (and yes, I had a 2018 and a 2020 model). My family get the hand me downs which also makes them happy I upgraded.
A $1000 (minimum) upgrade is worth HDR content and less apps refreshing? Actually I believe Apple is still limiting RAM use for apps despite the 8GB/16GB options. You don't have to try and justify your purchase to me, I already said it's fine if you as a person believe to have disposable income.

Now, if the M1 ran MacOS with pen support as a plain mouse cursor, it'd be an instabuy for me.
That's what I was hoping, if it was able to dual boot or instant switch from iPadOS to MacOS, even if MacOS required the keyboard/touchpad addon or external BT mouse/keyboard.

It's too bad jailbreaking is dead, would be fun if someone found a way to do that.

Wanna hear something funny… still no calculator or weather apps on iPadOS. What a joke of a release
I thought for sure when they showed the Quick Note mini-window that they were going to introduce a floating/mini app API, which would be perfect for also introducing weather and calculator apps. It could even be iPhone only apps just in the size of a slide over view but could go anywhere on your screen. Nope.

As long as I justify it to myself. For me it's worth it. I've bought every iPad Pro since the second one. And family have reaped the benefits.

And yes, stopping apps refreshing is important if you're working statefully. Being able to actively multitask while LumaFusion is working away. And LumaFusion does make the iPad Pro grunt. Yes, that's a big deal. And yeah, HDR is worth it (as I'm interested in working in HDR now).

Thunderbolt? Well. We will see. I've plenty of USBC SSDs that worked fine before this model.

like which reasons? Sorry just not following what would be different on the M1 than a 2019? best the LED basically which is of course SUPER nice
External monitor support, without mirroring, would have made the iPad Pro a truly portable creator's computer in addition to being a tablet - it'd be the Nintendo Switch of computers!

We can all agree that these were incremental upgrades throughout all OSes. That said, incremental does not mean bad. Some of them are nice. But yes, there were no "wow" announcements.

I personally think that we shouldn't discard the impact of Covid + all the work to transition from Intel to Apple Silicon. Combined together, these 2 factors left but little manpower to focus on OSes. One can say that these are separate teams and that one should not affect the other. I would disagree with such an argument, especially given how connected hardware and software are at Apple.

My view is this:
  • 2020 to 2021
Apple focusing on the hardware transition from Intel to Apple Silicon (and it's far from being a completed job)
  • From 2022
Apple focusing on OSes; no macOS on iPad (never), but bringing universal apps (the exact same code for Safari, Contacts, Calendar, so and so forth on both iPadOS and macOS) + introducing "pro" apps to the iPad like FCP, Logic, Xcode, and maybe some apps like Disk Utility as well (but that's a big "maybe" as we're in macOS territory here)

A lot of people want the iPad to be something it isn't right now. They want it to be another macOS device. The iPad is an awesome media consumption device and even with some editing (I edit photos and videos on mine).

For some reason, people are buying devices hoping the updates will follow. It feels like buying a Tesla hoping next year's update will add more range.
To be fair, a software update did actually make the performance Tesla model faster at 0-60.

At least we have MacOS-style, real windowing (not the gimped one in iPadOS) with the JB tool "Milkyway 3". (Haven't personally tried it but if it indeed works the same way as Quasar did back in the iOS5 days, it can't be bad.)

I am surprised how many people are justifying M1 iPad as future proof device. I think you forgot that your iPad Pro M1 does not have replaceable battery. So after 5 years you will have device that will be trash.

So no, it is not a good idea to buy now iPad Pro M1 and wait to use its potential. It is better to keep 2018/2020 Pro and buy newone as software will enhance your device.

Sorry guys. Today I went to Apple and bought iPad Pro 12.9” 2021 ? even I was writing that it is pointless. Why?

Firstly in our country right now we have 8% summer discount on all models. So this discount compensate me 150 bucks loss of difference in prices when I sell iPad Pro 2020. So I think I will not have better opportunity for upgrade and next year I would loss half price of iPad Pro 2020' s price.

Lets speak about reasons that are worth 200€

  1. I was waiting for upgrade my Air 2 for few years and in 2020 I was really disappointed with minimum upgrade that Apple introduced with iPad Pro 2020. The M1 version was what I was waiting for. To be honest I was never happy about having iPad Pro 2020.
  2. I thought deeply about benefits which are not small:
  • XDR display
  • M1 chip
  • thunderbolt port
  • 5G mobile network
  • 2GB RAM more
  • centerstage
Let me explain why it is not minor upgrade

  1. XDR display - the truth is that iPad is in general only one big display so improving display means better experience in every way of usage. For me it is really noticeable upgrade.
EYE STRAIN - from the first time I had both version of iPad Pro 2020 (11” and 12.9”) my eyes hurts and something was unpleasant that I could not explain. Now I know that it was LCD display that hurts my eyes. We are all the time looking to lights that are every time turned on. LED technology is much more pleasant because black diods are off. Right now I feel much more relaxed looking into bigger display and this benefit for my health is worth every penny. Now I know I will not look into LCD lights for few years everyday few hours.
  2. M1 chip - okay, arguments are that iPadOS does not unlock full potencial of this beast but I do not agree. How is possible that Divinity 2 Origin Sin (do not know the name very well) is playable at 60 fps but iPad Pro 2020 handle "only" 30 fps? So that shows that there are apps and games comming that can use the power of M1 and we do not have to be dependend on Apple software engineers. Right now I have to confirm that iPad Pro 2021 is much more fluid and you do not experience any lag at all. I remember that there were situation when iPad Pro 2020 lagged. And I am looking for new Diablo game and want to have best experience.
  3. Future proof - I have to admit that having iPad Pro 2020 would make me still unhappy and waiting again for new model in 2022. So going for 2021 model even when WWDC disappoints us is for me solution that I do not have next 4 years thinking that I missed something and looking for changing my device.. thunderbolt, 5g network, online videocalls with better camera makes it worth for next years. And I have one more year for iPadOS update.

  4. Battery life - I was using iPad Pro 2020 few hours per day and charging everyday, sometimes twice a day. So right now I have again complete fresh new battery and do not have to worrry that my iPad can serve me one year less because of battery capacity depreciation.
so after few hours of using I have to say I am really happy with the upgrade. In reality the difference between two models is bigger than when you are only reading about it and reading opinions of other people that are disappointed from conference.

BUT NOW I HAVE TWO iPad Pros 12.9”, so guys wish me luck to finding a buyer and selling 2020 version for good price. That is only what worries me at the moment!!! ???

+1 I bought a new 2018 iPad Pro from MicroCenter last spring (11 inch, 256gb, WiFi) for $535. Even though I can get $485 from Apple on a trade-in for a new M1 11 inch iPad Pro, I still don’t see the value in it upgrading yet. Sure it will be a bit faster, some apps might not refresh as much in the background and the speakers are a bit louder. But, there’s nothing that I could do with the new M1 IPP that I couldn’t do with the 2018 IPP. I think I’m gonna wait for a display update on the 11 inch before I let go of my 2018.

You could play Divinity Original Sin 2 at 60fps

True, although the business model is a bit different for them. I think generally people buy Teslas for what they are now.

After having Samsung devices for a bit, I learned to buy things for what they are...not what they could be.

I was pleasantly surprised with the Oculus QII with the recent software updates. I usually presume a product stays the way it is from day one.

If you bought the 2018 version instead of the 2020 version it may have saved you some struggle for whether it is worth it to upgrade to the 2021. At least the difference is bigger.

If people are angry with the 2021 update (only due to software), why weren’t they angrier with the 2018 -> 2020 changes? Apple literally just added a graphics core, a camera and LIDAR scanner and named it a new generation.

(fixed some typos sorry)

iPads are past the point of upgrading every year, iPhones are probably there too, especially now that the 12 has OLED. They are running out of tricks to get folks to upgrade yearly.

Low expectations. Personally, I was originally planning on upgrading back in 2020 but that was just such a major disappointment. Particularly so at the 1TB level.

Well said. It’s always been a consumption device for me. I actually use my iPad Air 4 more than my 12.9 as its more enjoyable to use as a tablet. I only purchased the 12.9 to use for movie watching at the office. Well now that I’m remote, I have a nice 50” OLED in my home office for that. I was borderline going to sell my 12.9 and just rock with my Air 4, but with the new multitasking coming, and the new Universal Control in MacOS Monterey, I will use my 12.9 as a screen companion for my future 14” MacBook Pro

I want your job!

We’ve been at the point of diminishing returns for quite a while. I upgraded last year from 4-yr old iPhone 7 to the SE 2020 (OLED migraines).

Even the 2018 iPad Pros, I didn’t find particularly enticing. All I really wanted from the 2018 models was the 1TB storage. Alas, not enough to pay the $1700-1900 ($1900-2100 with tax) asking price back then.
