It rarely does make much financial sense to upgrade from the n to the n+1 version of anything.
Definitely. I think way before it used to be significant (iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4) but nowadays definitely not. I think if people would limit their upgrades more, maybe the updates would seem more impressive at four years or more versus every single year.

A lot of people want the iPad to be something it isn't right now. They want it to be another macOS device. The iPad is an awesome media consumption device and even with some editing (I edit photos and videos on mine).

For some reason, people are buying devices hoping the updates will follow. It feels like buying a Tesla hoping next year's update will add more range.
Well said. It’s always been a consumption device for me. I actually use my iPad Air 4 more than my 12.9 as its more enjoyable to use as a tablet. I only purchased the 12.9 to use for movie watching at the office. Well now that I’m remote, I have a nice 50” OLED in my home office for that. I was borderline going to sell my 12.9 and just rock with my Air 4, but with the new multitasking coming, and the new Universal Control in MacOS Monterey, I will use my 12.9 as a screen companion for my future 14” MacBook Pro ?

Yep! The increments between consecutive models used to be greater. But all of these things have been really good for a long time, now, and it’s less likely there’s going to be some amazing improvement.

I’m quite surprised that they managed to make even less changes than my worse case scenario. Impressive.

I would be cancelling or returning any M1 order right now.

Unless you particularly need the screen or storage, the latest iPad Air should be more than fine at a fraction of the cost.

So surprised by all the disappointment everyone is mentioning… I actually thought it was great. A lot of features that I have wanted for soooo long are coming in a big way and I couldn’t be more thrilled tbh. I‘ll admit I wasn’t awaiting M1/2 news like a lot of you seemingly were but I’m pretty damn pleased for a dub-dub/software event... and I watch almost every presentation they do.

I'm not sure why everyone gets jacked up and upset about an event like this. The little things now lead to bigger things in the future. The new multitasking on ipados is solid, and the integration of better health features is incredible. It was only a year ago that they completely upgraded iOS, and we have gotten so many new hardware upgrades over the last year, it was time for a break.

I'm happy with the event.

The Multiverse
We can now make and submit apps directly from iPad now. It may or may not be the full blown xCode we were hoping for (we'll have to wait for actual reviews on the final version this fall to see where it lands), but that's a huge step forward.

There is even no reason to upgrade from the 2017 iPad Pro.
Let's see...Face ID, USB C, bezel less design, 5G, need I go on?

Looks like I’ll be buying a used 2020 iPad Pro. Hope no one bought the M1 iPad Pro expecting Apple to utilize the M1. Just a marketing gimmick more than anything.
It serves both as a marketing gimmick and a money saver as they only have to produce one essentially unchanged chip for several systems now.

Universal control was the only thing that really impressed me to be honest.

Am I the only one who thinks Apple is just doing more harm than good, by adding all these features to the "Core-apps" lately? I mean, iMessage has been a mess with all the emoji, memoji keyboards, the GIF-addons et.c already. Now comes the next part with these stacked photos, "Shared with you" et.c. Same can be said for Photos and Notes app.

Also, all these different swipe-motions always being added/changed on the iPad. Where is the cohesiveness?

Am I getting old, or is Apple starting to lose some of that "It-just-works" simplicity? I fear their software lacks a bit of direction lately.

If you have 2020 iPad Pro or heck even 2018 iPad pro = Don't buy.
If you don't have any iPad Pro or later = It's worth it.

Simple as that.
I have the first-gen 12.9". I don't see any reason to upgrade to the M1 model, except for being able to play XCOM 2, which isn't compatible with the first-gen Pros. For Web browsing, YouTube watching, freehand note taking / drawing and PDF annotation, the four things I 99,99% of the time use it for are perfectly OK even on such an old hardware running on 14.5.1 (or 14.6?). Note: to keep the iPad really fast (OTA upgrades did slow it down considerably on the long run), I tend to fully restore it before each bigger iOS update (not x.x.x bugfix releases.)

All in all, even for a lot of users of 1st/2nd-gen Pros, the M1 may not be an essential upgrade.

Now, if the M1 ran MacOS with pen support as a plain mouse cursor, it'd be an instabuy for me.

Yeah, I rolled the dice and spent an extra $100 on the M1 rather than a clearance-priced 2020. Oh well, it’s still a nice machine!

For once my instincts were right. There are just too many unrealistic expectations regarding the iPad Pro as well as its software. Almost everything people were expecting today for iPad was invented out of thin air by “leakers” and rumor sites. In reality it was another year of refinement.

I decided to veer back over to the Mac lane instead of buying the new iPad Pro like I usually do. I thought today might make that decision seem hasty, but I have to admit that I’m feeling rather smug right now.

edit—To be clear, I think another year of refinement is great—nothing wrong with that! It’s just not moving fast enough for me on iPad right now.

like which reasons? Sorry just not following what would be different on the M1 than a 2019? best the LED basically which is of course SUPER nice
Any of these Ken would have been nice. We got none. Granted many of these wouldn't need/exploit the M1/*GB+ RAM but the last 4 certainly would need the extra horsepower as would the pro apps and virtualization.

-External display support- extend not just mirror and scale to monitor
-clamshell mode with external monitor
-Ability to force all iCloud Drive documents/folders to be downloaded to iPad (like they are on Mac for offline use)
-Ability to manage iTunes library (add music, change tags, etc.) (being able to run Mac Music app would work as well)
-Better Files app (show copy/move progress)
-Interactive widgets anywhere on screen
-OS support for virtualization software (e.g. parallels)
-OS support for running Logic Pro
-Better external device support (external webcams for example)
-Better OS audio capabilities (multiple apps playing audio at once)
-Precise cursor mode (instead of round circle)
-"Activity Monitor" like OS process manager
-Bootcamp support to boot iPad Pro into Big Sur (disabling touchscreen - requires mouse/keyboard)
-Ability to run Mac OS apps (require mouse/keyboard)
-Floating window (even if you can't resize)
-Real multitasking / running background apps
