"Nursery school" looks, a first world problem.

Respectfully,

Taz

I wouldn't have called it nursery school myself. That evokes images of Microsoft's Windows XP which had a notable Playskool look to it and was therefore rather colorful as such.

I would say though I don't like the flat look and find Yosemite reminds me of my iPhone in its appearance and I don't like my iMac that way. I'd like the UI to be more attractive and preferably theme-able (I know, dream on) but for now at least I do not see that happening any time soon realistically.

What I most wanted to say though is sure, it certainly is a first world problem and a very minor one at that. Just the same though when you pay a company thousands of dollars a pop for computer systems repeatedly over time not to mention all the other tech from their ecosystem I do think it is fair enough to give them feedback about what you like and do not like.

That said, I also have to concede the majority ought to rule and for all I know in focus testing the majority in substantial numbers liked the new design direction. This assumes they did focus testing but I would expect Apple does this for both iOS and OS X, Apple TV, etc.

I still absolutely love my Mac and OS X in general even if I am not especially thrilled with the aesthetics currently myself. I may elect to use something like Flavours 2 for themes when it releases to put on the pretty face I'd like.

It does not surprise me to see two threads on Yosemite here, one I love it, one I hate it. Nobody can please everybody all the time ever.

recent upgrade

Installed Yosemite on my 2008 24" 2.8ghz iMac w 6gigs of RAM and boy, am I having issues. The display is so bright, the icons and many application images are washed completely out. I've turned the brightness down to absolutely black without any change..
I don't like the fact you can no longer use the 'delete' key to back up pages online.
I get 10X more popups now than I did under OS Snow Leopard and lastly, having to change all my Appleworks files over to MS Word was a chore and I HATE MS Word! The program loads my files up to the top of the first page instead of where I left off when I was last working with it like it used to in Appleworks.
MS Word - designed and written by an idiot PC programmer. They just love to make you work harder.

almost there

I have Yosemite running beautifully in VMware with Beamoff. I find that I am beginning to like the icons. The quip I have is that there should be more contrast as default in the icons under finder. It is very hard to tell at a glance what is a pdf, what is a doc, etc. I'm also not switching to this OS for functional reasons (lower game fps, don't like Photos, wifi drops).

That said, I am not sure if the interface is uglier or prettier. It has some similarities to signage in the NY subway system:

If that were entirely true, then none of Apple's successes would have occurred.

No matter how substantial the minority, I'm happy to be part of that minority.

I'm sure you could tell that in the context of this conversation I was speaking specifically of the majority ruling in the case of what the UI should be like. My statement had nothing to do with Apple's other decisions and resultant successes and I think that should have been obvious considering what this thread and discussion is about.

As I said, I don't even know who the majority and the minority are in this case and outside of any focus testing and other data collection by Apple I am unsure how anybody else could either.

Anyway, it is what it is. I hope I like the next version of OS X better. For now I am looking forward to the release of Flavours 2 and may also investigate to see if I can find something to make the Dock look nice again like it did in Mavericks, etc.

… I was speaking specifically of the majority ruling in the case of what the UI should be like. …

Understood. I assume that that a majority of users either:
  • prefer the UI of Yosemite; or
  • treat the visual differences (compared to earlier versions) as unremarkable
– certainly, of all the users with whom I have spoken (face to face, with the Mac in front of us) none commented on the looks of Yosemite; all expressed a preference for Apple products.

… I hope I like the next version of OS X better. For now I am looking forward to the release of Flavours 2

Already I think that Interacto Labs deserves an award …

– obviously that's not perfect, but I find it less harsh than Apple's themes.

At https://forums.macrumors.com/search/?f=69 seek cDock …

I like Yosemite. My only gripe is every so often, I have to hit the command key because opening up an app shows the finder application window instead. Otherwise, No issues.

For those purposes, you might like YosemiteRevert and cDock.

Etan

As you probably know by now, cDock v7.3 doesn't work any more with the latest beta of 10.10.4 - so we have to wait for an update there too.
I didn't realize just how much cDock did for the appearance of "Yo-smight".
With the standard dock, my screen screams "get back to Mavericks" :eek:

I haven't really checked back in here or in the 'terrible' thread, but I finally caved and switched to a Retina MBP. As it turns out that has eliminated most of my complaints about Yosemite's looks (fwiw).

What a great new business plan for Apple:
1) Sell customer a non-retina MacBookPro which works perfectly with existing software;
2) Announce an "free upgrade" to OS X with no warning it will substantially degrade performance of this customer's existing, previously purchased MacBookPro;
3) In order to get back original performance, customer buys a new retina MacBookPro;
4) Applause from shareholders! - Double the profit by doubling sales to the same size user base!

I bought a mid 2015 Retina MBP and am seriously loving Yosemite. It seems solid and the design is also nice.

As soon as I upgrade the ram on my 2012 i7 Mac Mini, I'll be upgrading it to Yosemite.

I don't think that was necessarily the test. Say in focus testing 20% hated the new look, 20% preferred it and 60% didn't care....any marketer will tell you that <some> controversy generates free coverage and editorial comment and if the net user change was even close (or close enough to be offset by the free publicity), then bang - it gets done. I don't believe Apple attributes greater weight to long-term conservative users, much as those users would like Apple to do so.

Shame there wasn't an "I think Yosemite is OK" thread... :)

You know, to be honest, I think a lot of my affection toward the new look of the interface in Yosemite has to do with the fact that it seemed more unified (in it's look) than previous versions of OS X and that it was so much different than older versions. I am not a person who necessarily likes a lot of change. I've had enough of that in my real life becoming a single Dad of 3 Kids! But, in this case, I believe that Apple was headed in the right direction. Believe me when I say that I do not like all the changes made, but as a whole, simply by looks, I think it is pleasing.

… mid 2015 Retina MBP …

Yosemite looks nicer on that, than on the 17" MacBookPro5,2. No surprise there.

After using it for a couple of hours or so, the default appearance remains visually inoffensive, but I know from experience that I'll not tolerate the title bar nonsense. …

Thirty minutes later …

That made me laugh just now thinking to myself that actually if I had to pick between love it, hate it, it's okay, I would pick it's okay. I might not care for the direction the look has taken but I still love OS X and my iMac generally speaking, that's for sure.
