Yosemite : needs to come with a health warning

After less than one day of upgrade I have terrible eye strain and the beginnings of a migraine.

Yosemite needs to come with a health warning : Causes eye strain and nausea if you do not have retina display machines.

DO NOT USE YOSEMITE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE RETINA DISPLAY DEVICES!!!

In addition to looking awful, and being blurry, I have had to max out the brightness on my MacBookPro to be able to discern anything. Even after boosting the contrast with some System Preferences tips, it still looks absolutely AWFUL. Which leaves me thinking that the software update is just a con to blaze out people's monitors earlier by requiring max brightness all in an effort to shift hardware from the Apple warehouse. Shame on you Apple! I hope your stock plummets.

In addition to the "you have one minute left on install" message, actually meaning "you have 5 hours to wait before you'll be able to use your computer" loss of working time. I now have the tedium of uninstalling and reinstalling something that isn't going to give me a chronic migraine every day.

How do so many well-paid "educated" people mess-up so spectacularly?

I haven't tried to install Yosemite (seeing I hate how it looks), but it does sound like you might need to adjust your monitor preference settings (i.e. do a calibration profile and make sure it's using the correct resolution). Others have not had that much trouble getting a usable display so I'm guessing something needs adjusting other than your monitor controls. After all, there are plenty of monitors out there with resolutions in the "Retina" range. I've had to do monitor calibrations with my Mac Mini (especially sine I have two different brand monitors connected). It made all the difference in the world. But then I'm not using Yosemite. ;)

I understand your frustration, but Yosemite doesn't look so dangerous on my non-retina monitors. Adjusting contrast in accessibility actually make things worse imo. I don't have a MBP, but I guess it's possible to adjust contrast on it as well? I wouldn't push brightness to the max since Yosemite's UI is already brighter than Mavericks.

I got eyestrain and headaches from using Yosemite on my Retina MacBook Pro.

It's not isolated to non-Retina Macs - it's hard on the eyes no matter what.

I noticed this today in an Apple Store playing with the new rMBP. I could tell right away it was hard to look at. If you're in terminal a lot like me, it was downright painful trying to read the screen. I'm a little bummed because I need a new one and I don't want that.

Here
I've used Yosemite on Retina devices an a 1080p monitor with 93 PPI and I didn't find Yosemite any more offensive on non-retina displays.

That said, my issue is with the poor usable choices that affect every monitor regardless of resolutions. For example, the drop down menus now blur your background. Okay, so if you use a dark wallpaper you get thin black text on a murky grey blurred background. So usable.

I LOVED the simple white drop downs with black text and blue highlights.

One big offender on this regard is the downloads pop up in Safari...I mean...really?

Why not just turn transparency off (or "reduce" it) then? Agreed it's kinda sad ;), but with no transparency it's a non-issue.

If you turn off the translucency the dock becomes a butt-ugly gray, and I noticed some icons with any gray in them blend right into it. If you take other steps to get rid of some of the "improvements" the UI just continues to look uglier and uglier.

Did I do something to Apple and this is their way of getting revenge? It's like someone read my mind and said, "What can we do to irritate this guy. I mean what can we do to REALLY, REALLY irritate this guy."

Try cDock - a free app available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdock/ , which has many options for the appearance of the Dock. I personally like the transparent option.
However, in general, Yosemite is indeed, "irritating." There is also an app available that installs a version of Lucida Grande that overrides the default "too-thin" Helvetica Neue. https://github.com/schreiberstein/lucidagrandeyosemite
Font Book will complain of duplicate versions installed, but you can just move the original Lucida Grande font to a backup location to fix that.
Along with turning off the system wide transparency in the Accessibility Pref Pane and using/installing some alternative folder icons (try Deviant arts) with Liteicon (Google that for the download) at last Yosemite becomes barely usable!
 Why can't Apple get closer to that goal themselves?

Thought Apple were expert designers?

...I've already changed the icons of Safari, iTunes (green by the way) Messages (back to iChat), Adress Book, all the folders (back to the old and good Tiger). I only would want to know how to change this boring interface to Aqua again.

You are on a RETINA Mac.

The overwhelming majority of vision and eye fatigue complaints emanate from non-Retina Mac users.

I'm intrigued… How many are actually using Yosemite on a calibrated screen.

On the other hand, when I install an OS update from none less than Apple itself, should I feel the need to calibrate my screen, replace system icons, hassle with system settings to deactivate "new functions" like transparency all over the place, replace the system font, etc etc? All that for the sake of basic usability? Sorry - but I think not.
If Apple would be user aware as they claim to be, their OS should be nothing less than perfect for the (average) user without extra customization.

My comment is why the heck doesn't Apple fix this mess called Yosemite so it's users will be satisfied. It seems that so many of the older Apple fans are disliking this new OS. Mavericks was working fine, except for Apple wanting to add the iPhone/ipad interface stuff.

I am somewhat a new fellow of only 5 or 6 years with my iMac. I am not loading Yosemite yet, but over time will need it as they will faze out all other OS. Or I suppose if I just want to leave Apple I can use my iMac with a windows system like the new Windows 10 soon to arrive on the market. But Hey MS is know for unloading crap nobody likes and will not change it either. What to do, what to do. Maybe we need a new OS to show up that is a thrill to use. Sometimes that happens in the market place when a company starts to think they are irreplaceable.

Apple is living in a fantasy world based on iPhone sales. Reader reports and surveys of the "new directions" that started occurring in iOS 7 reflect the opposite.

Do a legitimate, unbiased search, for the impressions people get from the "new" direction, and they're generally negative. Don't get "official" reviews from MacWorld, MacLife, CNET, or anyone that dare not offend their advertisers, look at actual reader reviews.

iOS 6, which used to score stellar user ratings, like 4 or 4.5 out of 5 possible is now replaced by iOS 7 and beyond, and the scores are typically in the vicinity of about 1.5 - 2.0 stars at best. Independent user reviews of Yosemite are likewise negative.

Apple has confused phone contracts which are based on long term contract prices with the quality of the OS and the interface.

Do you really think the *majority* of Yosemite users is not satisified? This thread is irrelevant since the same members, including me, post over and over... Most people like the flat look because it looks "modern" and not dated. Me? I was so used to the previous look that I do need to adjust. But like I said before the functionalities are there, the Mac is still a Mac with Yosemite. Different icon shapes won't change that.

I even went back to Mavericks a while ago, thinking I would stay there because it was a more pleasing experience. However, my second Yosemite installation eliminated everything that was wrong, for me, the first time.

Quick look at the candian app store says otherwise regading 10.10.

I'm surprised 10.10.2 is still getting loads of 1 star ratings on the UK store.
