Hey. Just updated to Yosemite and I love it so far. Only problem is that I'm finding some parts of the UI extremely laggy. For instance:

Clicking on About This Mac and cycling through the different tabs. The animations look like they're running at 10 fps.

In System Preferences - clicking on the options and returning back to the main menu

Quick Preview - doesn't do the full animation (sometimes)

Yet, when I swipe up on the trackpad to get to my spaces, it runs extremely smooth. Is anyone else experiencing this?

It seems to be a common problem. I would guess that it has to do with the way these specific apps are programmed.

I also noticed the very slow performance clicking between tabs in about this mac.

This has always been pretty choppy. Not sure why since tab views like this work well in other apps. And yes, the system preferences app is not as fluid as before.

Ive got exactly the same. Reducing translucency helps a lot.

Its unacceptable in my opinion but there is nothing else you can do :(

On my imac 2011 it runs very smooth. except for the about this mac window.

Same here

Some bits of lag here and there in addition to minimal decrease in responsiveness compared to Mavericks on first gen. rMBP.

Edit:
The lag is actually more severe than I originally thought. The preview app is not at all usable to read PDFs. All animations are getting more and more laggy. Clean install didn't solve the problem.

Definitely have some ui lag here on my rMBP 15" early 2013. Mainly only when opening folders like the applications folder And documents folder. The animations at very choppy. Not happy at all considering it's only from 2013.

yeah. this is my point - why do this clever *stuff* if it doesn't work as cleverly as it should?

I just feel like I'm being slowly fleeced by apple marketing trying to exaggerate performance differences between new and barely old hardware.

...at least give me a dial to turn the *bull* down

Is it bad to just force use the discrete graphics card all the time? At least until Apple hopefully releases a fix? Seems to work better using the 650M.

didn't help.

It's not that I don't think it can do it - quick look could animate very smoothly under 10.9 - I suspect that the accidental benefit of raising the bar without optimisations for older hardware (mid 2012 rMBP) is a helpful in promoting the need to upgrade.

I have an 8MP tif on my desktop that was fluid yesterday but now has a noticable 3 step judder in the animations persistence of vision.

disappointing

Same problem but more wide spread. Incredibly choppy on my 2010 imac 27" with 12 GB of ram. Reduced transparency doesn't do much.

My workflow involves 10 spaces, full screen apps. Worked fine with Mavericks.

Working totally fine on my rMBP, I was initially worried reading people report that it lags on rMBP. But after using it for more than a day, I can say it's been smoother than Mavericks for me.

Yeah, pretty choppy here on my Late 2013 13" 8/256. Scrolling in Safari, navigating in Finder, just general usage, I noticed choppiness is in the cursor/mouse. Pretty annoying.

rMBP mid 2012:

It is choppy when using the integrated graphic card. Especially animations of windows resizing and full screen mode. It's smoother, but not perfect, when the dedicated graphic card is on.

Do you thing an upgrade in the Intel HD 4000 VRAM up to 1576 mb would solve those lags in animations?

I remember they doubled the VRAM (from 512 mb to 1024 mb) with Mavericks.

Anyway I guess it's a problem concerning all the rMBPs with the Intel HD 4000, not only the 2012 ones. I think it would be a good idea to change the name of the topic to make it more visible to everybody with those MBPs.

PS: I updated from Mavericks, I don't know if a clean install could help.

The only place I've noticed any lag is in About This Mac. And they've finally fixed the App Store so it's smooth. I think everything (notably Safari) seems a touch smoother on my late-2013 13" rMBP.

On a 2012 rmbp, I'd say that it's more laggy than Mavericks.

There is lag in:

Itunes - Browsing the shop
Itunes - Browsing Album Jackets
UI - Show available desktop spaces
UI - Move between spaces
Imovie - When running, Imovie tends to provoke very heavy lag in other apps and in the UI (even when using discrete graphics on the mains).
Final Cut Pro X - Same as Imovie

Oddly, Word 2011 seems less choppy when scrolling...

Its really weird, how different the experiences are. On my 2012 15" rMBP, its definitively less laggy overall than Mavericks, up to the point that I'd say its completely lag-free; except some select applications of course (App Store is a classic).

P.S. Fullscreen seems to lag as well, but I think its just the way the animation works (its weirdly delayed). What I mean, is that its actually smooth, but appears laggy because its its weird timing. The System Preferences seems to suffer from a similar problem as well.

First gen rMBP 2.3 16gb here. It feels better for me compared to Mavericks. There's still minimal lags here and there, but it was there on Mavericks as well. I think I just avoided using those actions before. But now it seems minimal enough that I don't mind them. I'm actually using fullscreen on everything right now. If it lags it only happens the first time doing that action, like going to spaces with bunch of full screen Safaris open. After that it's all smooth. I'm also forcing the 650m on.

Is it bad to force the 650m on all the time? I have the 2013 rMBP 15" and I also noticed it's better with the 650m on.

It just uses more power/battery. It's what most desktop uses, one graphics card. We have two to save battery on applications that don't need the power, and for when it's not plugged in. But I rather have a smooth experience with no lag than a bit shorter battery life.

Same here, the lag was terrible. Had to do a clean install and then turn off translucency to rid of it.
