I can confirm that Xbench graphic and UI scores are awful... Here are mine

(using the discrete GPU) :
Results 51.02
System Info
Xbench Version 1.3
System Version 10.10 (14A389)
Physical RAM 8192 MB
Model MacBookPro10,1
Drive Type OSX
Quartz Graphics Test 126.97
Line 107.06 7.13 Klines/sec [50% alpha]
Rectangle 98.26 29.34 Krects/sec [50% alpha]
Circle 98.91 8.06 Kcircles/sec [50% alpha]
Bezier 130.31 3.29 Kbeziers/sec [50% alpha]
Text 481.41 30.11 Kchars/sec
OpenGL Graphics Test 222.74
Spinning Squares 222.74 282.55 frames/sec
User Interface Test 21.54
Elements 21.54 98.84 refresh/sec

(using Intel integrated GPU) :
Results 74.20
Quartz Graphics Test 173.64
Line 165.27 11.00 Klines/sec [50% alpha]
Rectangle 145.30 43.38 Krects/sec [50% alpha]
Circle 137.90 11.24 Kcircles/sec [50% alpha]

Text 553.36 34.62 Kchars/sec
OpenGL Graphics Test 229.27
Spinning Squares 229.27 290.85 frames/sec
User Interface Test 32.99
Elements 32.99 151.43 refresh/sec

It's not a problem with RAM (mine is in the green most of the time) or CPU (I'm under 20% most of the time). There is clearly something wrong with the GPU driver or something... The really weird part is that according to Xbench, the integrated GPU performs better than the discrete one...

Weird, I just ran it on my Mac Mini 2011 with dedicated AMD 6630 with several applications open, and here are the results:

After 24 hours with reduced transparency enabled, I am not noticing any interface lag. This seems to have either solved or greatly reduced the problem for me.

Reduced transparency and daily reboot seems to help on my side too... But what's the point of Yosemite if I have to reboot my Mac way more often than I reboot my Windows PC and if the UI with reduced transparencies now looks like the original MacOS ?

Same here. Awful UI lag when doing normal operations and it gets way worse when having some apps open that push the CPU a bit more. I'll definitely start waiting for the first or second incremental update before I upgrade to a new OS X version.

That is what I usually do, but the UI refresh enticed me to update a little sooner this time around.

IMO, the first couple of point updates are what the GM should be.

I always am an early adopter and I can say for sure that, since I use a Mac (10.4), this is the worst experience. And I made a clean install.

You're absolutely right but, for that to happen, Apple would need to drop the idea of releasing a new OS X version every year. Two years would be perfect imo and it wouldn't make that much of a difference to consumers.

UI lag when zoomed

I seem to only get UI lag from 3 areas.

1: when i hover over iStat Menus and move the mouse over the menu items.

2: when I control zoom the lag gets REALLY bad. probably 1 fps... though iStat says the fps fps hasnt changed.
the zooming in may seem inconsequential but i use it 20 times a minute probably cuz i have poor vision. Issue was non existent with previous versions.

3: System Preferences.

also forgot to mention my rig. mid 2013 27" iMac 3.4 i7 32GB RAM GTX 680MX 2GB

Wow... the fact that they'd managed to get a score of ~250 in Mavericks for the UI test to ~25 is pretty astounding... Seems more like a downgrade by 10 times

Guys, for those of you who have installed chrome on your mac and experience ui lag. Please UNINSTALL chrome and log out and then log back in. This works for me. i think chrome is not compatible with mac yosemite.

It's very likely the placebo effect, but after doing this, I feel like animations are a bit smoother. Thanks

I wouldn't trust Xbench as far as I could throw it, do you know it was last updated in 2006?!? What's changed in your life in the last 9 years?

Who knows what issues could be bubbling under the surface that new hardware and software has brought to the fore.

It's not Chrome. It's WindowServer process that is bugged. Killing it and relogging or even rebooting helps a ton. You don't have to reduce transparency.

I hope Apple will fix it soon or I'm going back to Mavericks.

Valid points. However, since people have been constantly talking about how stuttery yosemite is compared to mavericks, I believe that the score still reflects it somewhat. I know someone previously said not to consider the OpenGL graphics test scores though. Software optimizations in yosemite is desperately needed for sure.

the tool is legit even after 9 years for the graphic part and OSX is more a "features OS"(useless bloatware for me) than advanced programming.
In many ways it's still a Mac OS Tiger.

I have not noticed any slow down or speed up on my maxed mid-2012 rMBP in any of Yosemite's user interface, mileages obviously vary but I would have to assume that it's a vocal minority that are complaining because that's how these things work. I'm not disregarding other people's experiences, but Yosemite is not flat out broken. I have seen Youtube video of Mission Control stutter so I know that exists.

I'm calling Xbench out because according to an earlier post in this thread it reports that Yosemite's UI interface is 10x slower than Mavericks. Really? Has anyone observed and recorded slowdown this extreme? Or is it more likely something like transparency has broken Xbench (I'm no programmer).

Hi there,

I get those ui lags too. It appears to me after 1day of uptime.

I found out today that when I kill Dock (run pkill Dock at terminal) everything went back to normal. Maybe I'll have to kill dock again after a while. But as it revives again, it is a work around while they fix the problem.

It is very strange because when all lags starts the Dock is extremely slow and the Windowserver becomes a CPU hog. Maybe the Dock is letting some unfinished communications opened and window server goes overload.

I'd like to emphasize that I'm running in a reduced transparency and "more contrast" .

Hope that helps and that everybody can obtain same results as me.

It does not make any sense to draw the UI faster than 60fps because of the display refresh rate. This is why these Xbench UI benchmarks are pointless. For instance, high UI performance might just come from OS ignoring the excessive draw calls and a low one can come from throttling them in order to save energy/prevent the app from abusing the system resources.

Bottomline: make sure that you measure what you think you are measuring before making any conclusions.

Removing Chrome did boost up the score in bench. I wonder what's going on with Google? They did something to YouTube and now Chrome for Mac?!
