I figured instead of starting a new thread, I'll just start the convo here...
Thoughts on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus?
I think it's a good update for the iPhone. A lot of things are long overdue. For example, a front facing camera that offers more than 1.2 MP -- it's about damn time. Back shooter looks like a nice upgrade, too, and Touch ID 2 sounds good (faster fingerprint reader is always welcomed). RAM will be interesting to see (god, it better be 2GB), and it's a shame about the default storage option (with 4K video recording, I was almost sure there the default option would be 32GB). Plus, I would have loved to see even more, like quick charging (this feature has saved me so many times) or a higher resolution screen or OIS on the 6S (were they clear on what whether it would have OIS or not? I wasn't sure...), but... all in all, still a solid and arguably necessary update.
As for 3D Touch, I like it. However, it's not a "must-have" or "must-buy" feature like Touch ID was when it was first introduced. I just don't see the merit of pressing harder on a screen, nor do I see a huge difference between that and long-pressing. Yes, I'm aware long-pressing means holding onto it longer whereas pressing harder means actually putting more pressure into the screen, but effectively, they both convey the same results and given that, I prefer long-pressing over pressing harder on a glass screen. I'm curious to try it, but ultimately, I don't feel it's a must-have feature that makes me want to get the iPhone.
I will say this though:
I think where the real gain of 3D Touch is is in the fact that app icons are now action-able.
In some ways, it's as close as iOS can get to widgets on a home screen (actual widgets are better, IMO). At least now, you don't have to necessarily go into an app or pull down the notification shade to act. You can do it directly from your home screen and from the app's icon.
And to bring this thread back on topic... another major smartphone announcement, another pass for me. The S6 still reigns supreme for me for 2015. What remains is the Nexus 5X. And personally, I don't see that dethroning the S6.
