What are you using these beasts for? Audio or Video?

It seems he is using two RME audio cards, but he have a true color sony monitor too. It might be an Audio and video with redundancy setup.

Video Playback, with good quality sound (hence the lovely RME's). It's first outing for an Awards ceremony, over 310 vt cues. Previously years, used the oMP's but with the Thunderbolt storage, this new setup just flew through the cues!!

Kind of a mess, but temporary...

I use my nMP for a variety of media creation and management, including Final Cut Pro 10.1, Handbrake, Compressor, Adobe CS6 (mostly Illustrator, Bridge and inDesign, some Dreamweaver) , VueScan, etc.

Part of the mess is that I have a large number of USB peripherals that I attach via a 24 port Manhattan powered USB hub. Also there is a second computer, a MacMini that I use for stuff like tax returns, etc. I am thinking of transferring all my nonessential stuff requiring access to the boot drive (iPhoto) to the MacMini since I have found that it uses a horrifying amount of the SSD in the nMP. Whatever you do, if you get one of these, get the biggest boot drive you can afford. I just had to have mine in 2013 so I opted for the stock configuration with 250GB.

Attached to the nMP are a Wacom Intuos 4, Nikon Coolscan V film/slide digitizer, Panasonic AG-1980 VHS deck (via a Firewire digitizer and FW-Thunderbolt adapter), a Canon GL-2 similarly connected for ingesting DVD, an Epson V600 flatbed scanner and my main video storage, a Promise Pegasus 2 R4 configured in RAID 5. Also a couple of smaller external HDDs for specific backups and SuperDuper for the boot drive and various Nikon cameras. I am compulsive about backup and am thinking about getting a second 12TB Pegasus to configure as RAID 1 to back up the R4. The idea of redigitizing all the original and converted media on the R4 is simply unimaginable. Cloud storage is not an option as I live in a very rural area and all we have is 1.3 mbps DSL in our area.

I am looking at this forum and others to get a better idea of how to set this whole business up more efficiently. Interestingly, the ONLY new wire associated with the nMP is the Thunderbolt cable to the Pegasus. I had all the others on the old setup.

In the picture you can see the keyboards for the MacMini and the Das Keyboard (nice to use but sometimes slow to connect) for the nMP and the old Apple mouse and the Magic Mouse and Touchpad for the nMP. Some of the wires are for the television (not in picture). The Wacom is under the Apple KB. The Manhattan hub is next to the Pegasus. Also Lizzy Borden, a gift from my daughter. She's fascinated by this century old mystery!

The absolutely awesome performance of the nMP on Handbrake, FCPX and Compressor made the purchase absolutely worthwhile. What used to take hours now takes minutes. If you are doing anything with video, get a Mac Pro 6,1!!

Damn. Looking at y'alls setups makes me look like I should go on an episode of "Cable Hoarders"... and I haven't even gotten my nMP yet :p

Part of the mess...

It's refreshing to see someone's desk as completely obliterated as mine. I try to keep it organized but I too have a metric buttload of USB peripherals, drives, etc. that I need to connect to my nMP. I have SD reader (would it have killed them to build one in?!), web cam, keyboard, hard drives a-plenty, Wacom tablet, etc.etc.

The only Thunderbolt port I'm using is for my dual-link DVI adapter which ALSO requires a USB port for power.

Right now my mass storage is two USB3 3 TB drives which, compared to the internal storage, are painfully slow. My next HDD purchase will certainly be of the Thunderbolt variety.

Yup, a whole lotta wires. I forgot to mention the SD card reader, which I also have, the Mac Superdrive, the Blu-Ray Drive, the micro USB for the Nikon 5100, the Lightning connector for the iPhone and new iPads, the old iPad connector for my venerable iPad 1, the mini USB for the Nikon D70.....

I wonder if there's a long term solution to all this lurking in some research lab somewhere. I do hope so!

Got this system to replace a 2006 Mac Pro. Actually got it in February but it took me this long to get around to cleaning up the clutter on my desk so I could take a picture.

Mac Pro is 6 core/D700/32GB/1TB. HP displays are 27", 2560 x 1440. The system is used for software development. (Therefore, the D700's were not strictly necessary, but I am planning to write some OpenCL code.) All work documents are kept on the internal SSD. The external storage is used for backup and for media files that do not need high speed transfer.
