Though I'm still on the iPhone 8 Plus I find it hard to fault Apple for the price of the X, it's essentially become the main computer one uses now and is priced as such and not unreasonably IMO, especially when you think about what people have to pay for a laptop these days.

Agreed. I just wish I could hook it up to my Dell Ultrasharp and use a mouse with it. :(. I have an Anker bluetooth keyboard I use with it and I still can't figure out how to switch apps without using the phone itself - but I do a bit of data entry on my phone. ---- Get a lap desk and a phone stand, turn on DND, bluetooth keyboard, lawn chair in the backyard and you have yourself a great 30 minute journal entry :) (I do this now and then).

As much as I disliked paying $1080+ for my iPhone 8+, it is something I use more than any other electronic device (not counting my work computer).

X might be better but not twice better. Not $550 better.

Some are also lying to themselves that the iPhone X is actually worth it. Can't even beat a $550 phone in a speed test. A speed test that mattered to some when iPhone won them all last year.

Before I say anything, those speed tests are really ridiculous. Can that $550 phone run AR apps, run a game like GRID Autosport or analyze photos with machine learning locally? I'm not saying that OnePlus One is slow or anything, but if you do believe it's actually faster than the iPhone, well, you just fell for some clickbaity claims and badly run tests. Welcome to the Internet.

As for "is it $550 better"? Well, it depends. Are you willing to pay 500 dollars for a better phone? Then yes, it's worth it. If you're not, than it's not worth it. "Worth" is a VERY relative concept. Take high end cameras, for example. A $2000 Nikon or Canon is not TWICE as good as a $1000 camera. But some people would gladly pay an extra $1000 for a slightly better picture quality because they are looking for the best camera they can afford.

I like phones, I use my iPhone all the time and I wanted the best one I could comfortably afford. If you don't really care about phones that much and just want to comfortably communicate with people, take solid photos, browse the web, etc. - then OnePlus One is a clearly better deal for you. But does that mean that people who bought something more premium are lying to themselves? This sounds like you're bitter about it.

Personally, I would never buy a $1000 watch (let alone something more expensive). I'm not a watch guy. Does that mean a $1000 watch "is not worth it"? Sure it is. If people find emotional pleasure in them, they are worth it, for sure.

The only iPhone worth its price is the SE. Not paying $550 for an iPhone with an HD screen and only 2 GB RAM. iOS11 is poorly optimized and this 64-bit era should have a minimum of 4 GB.

SE2 could be a bad purchase considering it will be based on the 7 specs with only 2 GB. Not future-proofed enough. The first iPhone with 4 GB would be better. The X will age just as long as the 7 Plus and 8 Plus.

No product is ever twice as good as something half the price. It’s a basic concept called diminishing returns.

Those videos are specifically made for people like you to watch to lie to themselves. It’s not that I couldn’t afford the X, no no no, it was because I’m smart.

The price you paid for your 7 is what I paid for my X. This was because I did another two year contract. If that wasn’t an option then I wouldn’t have this phone because I agree with everyone else. This phone is not worth 1100+.
It makes me realise how much of a poor deal Apple give us in the UK reading your post. A two year contract for the X here is around 4 times more expensive here and that’s for the cheapest deal. You are looking at at least 2 grand by the end of the 24 months. Absolute rip off.

I still am yet to meet anybody who has got an X here. It’s hardly surprising though.

I really liked the X, but I became underwhelmed after a week of using it. Besides camera and the new screen, to me it wasn’t worth $1100. So I returned it, bought a new iphone 7 from the Apple store, downloaded Bokeh Lens app, and now my pics look just as good if not better than the portrait mode I thought I would miss on the X. Paid $550 for my 7, and I feel happy knowing I don’t have a lease, my phone is unlocked, and that I have a $50 payment every month for everything unlimited through Metro PCs.

Makes the iPhone 7 that much sweeter.

Why didn't you BOUT the iPhone 8?

Disregarding what the X costs in your location, in the US the price is the same whether you bought it for cash or the 24 month deal. The 24 month deal is also without interest. And if the price is too much, there's always the 8 or the 7. I bought the 8 and then got the X, "food chaining" the 8 to my wife. After a month with the X, I would slightly favor the 8 ONLY because I still don't like the gestures in lieu of the missing home button for navigation.

IMHO I love the iPhone SE form factor and it's performance is excellent even on iOS 11, but $450 (+taxes) for the 128GB is not worth it considering all the limitations and missing features of the SE. If you can get one for less, cool. I spent a week with a SE, but ended up returning it and getting a used 128GB iPhone 7 for only about $20 more than the 128GB SE. It's larger than I want, but other than that, it's a solid device that I don't have many complaints about (if I have complaints, it's with iOS 11).

I actually don't expect the SE2 to happen, at least not in 2018, as I think Apple will continue to keep the current SE as it's low-end, and push it in more markets (such as India) while pursuing lower manufacturing costs. However, if an SE2 exactly on par with the iPhone 7 hardware was released in 2018, I'd be very happy to buy one. By on par, I mean lacking no features -- it should have water-proofing, 3D touch, solid-state home button, the same front-facing camera, and similar quality LCD panel. I don't think future-proofing would be that much of an issue. If they kept the same resolution, the UI performance would be an absolute beast with the 7 hardware (less pixels to push) -- the SE is currently excellent in that regard with it's 6S hardware pushing a smaller number of pixels.

What I'm actually hoping for is a smaller X-style device to be released, though I think we'll see a larger X-style device before we see a smaller one. The iPhone 7 is a perfectly good device to use while I wait to see what the future brings, and I think it's performance will be fine for the next 2 years.

That’s an insane amount of money for a phone. Is that with monthly payments added to your bill? I paid 580 at once for my X. No payments here.

This is what you arent getting. Its not about affording for many prople. Its the X simply isnt a better phone. I had the X and returned it for the 8+ because I think the 8+ is a better phone. Full stop. As in id pay more for the 8+ than the X. The X is a worse phone to me. The user experience is worce. Faceid is slower and worse. Screen burn in and viewing angles are worse. The X is a worse phone.
Better is subjective to each user if you want to go down that road. To me the X is a much better experience than the 8 plus was for me. Face ID has been as good as touch ID, screen burn in hasn't even been reported as a problem thus far on the X (and yes I know its an issue with OLED displays) so using that as a negative is weak, viewing angles are part of OLED and are another weak attempt at making an issue unless you spend the majority of your time looking at your display from the side. You were 100% correct in saying the "X was a worse phone for you" but 100% wrong in saying the "X is a worse phone".

That’s on contracts of about £60 per month. There might be cheaper deals if you shop around but the upfront costs are rarely less than £500 before the contract even starts. It’s put me off I have to say.

I found it weird, that people nowadays need to write a post justifying their lack of satisfaction from iPhone X. As if by default, latest is greatest from Tim and friends. It is not, from my perspective.
I have money for three iPhone X, but went to SE last month. It works, snappy and relatively cheap. Pick one that works for you, and be happy.

As long as you're happy that's all that matters. cheers!

Everybody I know who owns one seems to rate them, my wife included. A lot of women seem to go with them because they are smaller and from my usual they seem pretty capable little phones.

And don't forget it is cheaper than X and 8.
If you don't mind dealing with a tiny display SE is the best phone out there if you consider its price.

Comparing the iPhone to an Android alternative is irrelevant to most of us. I don't care about any specs/performance of Android, since there is a 0% chance of me switching. For those of us that will only buy an iPhone, we get to choose between iPhone models. For me, the X is the best model, so I chose it.

I think for me it’s not a matter of if a phone is $x amount better than another. That is fairly subjective, especially depending on your income. My main concern is having a $1000+ device in my pocket that can be accidentally destroyed in various ways fairly easily. I suppose that’s what insurance is for, but I purchase outright (one less liability), so I can accidentally break and replace a $450 phone for less than one $1000 phone would cost me. Plus repair parts are cheaper and more available on older/cheaper models.

The iPhone 7 is a good phone and the matte black is my 3rd favorite iPhone design ever but since I'm OS agnostic, would rather get...

Essential PH-1: $400
OnePlus 5T: $500
Pixel 2: $650

Even a 6s for $400 or less would be a better deal since the only thing the 7 does better is camera in low light and having dual front speakers. I live in a dry climate now and don't need water-resistance. The space gray 6s has headphone jack and doesn't smudge as easily as the matte black 7. The 7 also has the highest SAR/EMF for any iPhone.

Pixel 1 & 2 -
5" OLED 1080p
Similar-sized as the iPhone X
4 GB RAM
Same camera as the XL
Similar battery life

An HD iPhone (750p) in 2017 for $550 with similar ppi as an iPhone 4 is a waste. The 4.7" iPhones have the least amount of RAM, no Telephoto, worse battery life even against the SE. It should be packing 2300 mAh, not 1800-1900 which is only 200-300 more than an SE.

Watch the 7 series perform badly here.

And Krystal Key.. oops, I mean Krystal Lora uses an iPhone as her daily driver...

I miss when 6s (2 GB RAM) on iOS9 could defeat OnePlus 3 (6 GB) on Android 6. Now on iOS11, it struggles against Note8 and OnePlus 5T with an extra gig of RAM. Those times seem long gone...

David Raimi is an Android guy but we all watched iPhones defeat Androids with 2-3x more RAM last year...

Now if iPhone X loses to Note8 and 5T, it doesn't matter? Change the narrative as you please. I've watched the iPhone 7 lose constantly to the Note7 and Pixel in photos and iPhone 8/X lose to the Note8, Pixel 2, and 5T in either photos or speed tests. Even in battery tests and charging time speed, it fared the worst.

MacRumors guy even gave a fair review to Pixel 2 XL against the iPhone X. Very interesting. If you were OS agnostic and don't care for ecosystems, the best all-around smartphone of 2017 is the Google Pixel 2. For me, it's Walleye and not Taimen. No display issues like the LG one. But most are in love with the 2 XL one and in panda. It's cute in that color but that display...

Battery - Pixel 2, but barely
Camera - Pixel 2, but X wins in videos
Display - iPhone X, but barely
Design - iPhone X
Charging Speed - Pixel 2
Value - Pixel 2 ($350 cheaper)
RAM - Pixel 2

I honestly think the Essential for only $400 with better materials used has better value than both of them. Computational photography from Google will only get better. Add Google Camera app and you can mask some of the Essential's weakness in camera.

https://www.essential.com/blog/why-I-started-essential

The result is Essential, and this is what we believe:

- Devices are your personal property. We won’t force you to have anything on them you don’t want to have.

- We will always play well with others. Closed ecosystems are divisive and outdated.

- Premium materials and true craftsmanship shouldn’t be just for the few.

- Devices shouldn’t become outdated every year. They should evolve with you.

- Technology should assist you so that you can get on with enjoying your life.

- Simple is always better.

Good choice. The iPhone 7/7 Plus should be speedy for the next couple of years. However, by all indications, the cameras on the 8/8 Plus/X are big steps forward. I have a 7 Plus and the camera is on of the biggest reasons I am itching to upgrade, to the 8 Plus. I’ll wait a year or so for the X Plus, if that happens.

It may have something to do with people wanting to have discussions on discussion boards.

Which is great, but there’s a tremendous amount of redundancy. There are many “I chose such and such phone because...” threads. I’ve discussed my own purchasing decision extensively without creating a whole new thread about it.

Not trying to be the thread police or anything. No sweat off my back either way. Just saying, we don’t need a new thread every time someone buys or returns an iPhone on a forum for iPhone users. Most of the time it is just people looking for validation and it frequently degrades into bickering over which phone is better.

I understand your point, but to place myself in the other corner here, I actually like reading these threads even if they are redundant. But, I wouldn't want every member of this site to create a new thread as that would be way too much. The OP of this thread is a new member of this forum so they may not be familiar with this site at all or even be aware that other threads exist. If you know of a specific thread that this discussion would be better suited for, you could mention it to the OP or report the thread with a link to that thread so a moderator could move it.

Congrats on coming to your senses. The 7 is an awesome device. Im also in the $1100 is way to much for a phone club. The 7 IMO is maybe going to be the last one of the greats. Solid metal back, Glass backs are just to fragile. Mine runs Ios 11 flawlessly, wireless charge? Don't need it with the way 11 has optimized the battery. AND,,,, One of the best features , well there are several but no F***in' gestures! And a real home button. In any case enjoy your much more practical choice. My 7 will probably be my last Iphone the way Apple is heading. I'll be keeping mine thru it's first battery swap down the road and then till the wheels fall off.
