There's a new QuickTime plugin with updated white on black controls.
View attachment 275734
Sreenshot of the new controls, please? :)
I'm concerned about the loss of some functions, though. In the "old" plugin, one could do frame-by-frame with arrow keys or the scroll wheel. With the white-on-black interface introduced in Snow Leopard (which isn't actually the Quicktime plugin), no longer. And there's no way to save the movie on disk even with QT Pro installed. :(

Regarding Flash performance, Snow Leopard introduced some improvements in Core Animation that also helped performance. Don't know if Lion improved this further. I also doubt that ATI/AMD GPUs are supported for H.264 decoding. We would have heard of it I believe.

Frame by frame works, saving works as well.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Mac OS X, is in fact, BSD/OS X, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Mac plus BSD. Mac OS X is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning BSD system made useful by the BSD corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the BSD system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of BSD which is widely used today is often called “OS X”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the BSD system, developed by the BSD Project.

There really is a Mac OS X, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Mac OS X is the UI: the program in the system that creates the pretty graphics. The UI is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Mac OS X is normally used in combination with the BSD operating system: the whole system is basically BSD with Mac OS X added, or BSD/OS X. All the so-called “Mac OS X” versions are really distributions of BSD/OS X.

How's encoding in say iMovie or Final Cut with the newer QuickTime engine? Does it actually take advantage of all of the cores available or is it the same as before?

Also any confirmation on hardware acceleration support for ATI/AMD GPU's?

I put together a video of the best features from Lion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mL1k4Zwf1I

I can't wait. I want Lion to come out more than I wanted Snow Leopard. And I wanted Snow Leopard so much.

But I'll wait for the bugs to be worked out with third party apps, which seem to wreak havoc on my user when I have them all running. Bowtie and GeekTool don't work right with Spaces and Exposé and DropBox and Growl don't work at all. So let's hope for speedy updates when Summer comes around.

Also, apps that aren't first party don't get to take advantage of Lion's cool Fullscreen Space mode. Like Chrome, Firefox and Opera. They all do Fullscreen, but they don't get a space of their own. So let's hope to Jebus that they're all updated when Lion comes out. Safari just doesn't cut it. I needs mah Chrome and I am hoping to be able to put all my main apps fullscreen at all times.

Looks great, thanks for the preview. I can't wait for it, especially for the mAil app. That thing has needed a facelift for quite a while.

The interactive previews on spotlight is great too, but might be a little too interactive..

what does this have to do with new features in Lion?

It's a troll. As in: "I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as [insert OS], is in fact, [/OS]~".
Usually in the form of: "I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux."

Don't feed the trolls. :p

yes, Mac OS X is unix based with a backend of the open source BSD and a few others, but OS X isn't only the UI. Apple used Nextstep's XNU and developed Darwin which cocoa applications that Apple developed use. so therefore how is OS X not an OS? i suggest you read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architecture_of_Mac_OS_X#Mac_OS_X

Clearly you have never heard of the "I'd just like to interject for a moment..." meme.

How do you then scroll left and right on a page too large to display in its full width? Such as a large image?
Why is this not 3-finger swiping as it is on Snow Leopard?

You can set it so you can use both.

I love the awesome animation of "scrolling" through webpages, but its a little glitches so I set the three finger swipe for navigation.

I should report that as a bug really.. 4 finger swipe is set for spaces/mission control and so is 3 finger swipe.

Seems stupid.

Virtually every app that I've brought over from SL has worked, including Photoshop.

It's not a bug, you can set which one you want to use from the system prefs. Look under "trackpad" or "mouse".

can't watch the video, because youtube blocks it in germany. maybe you can repost it without music from sony and use some cc music instead?
damn youtube and damn sony...

You can use youtubeunblocker.co.uk to watch it. (Or any of the other sites that show up when you google Unblock YouTube.)

Alternatively, you can also download the video using an online youtube download service, like filsh.net.

On the dev forums an apple rep said you should report anything that disrupts your work flow. Not just software bugs :p

Only major, glaring issue right now is full screen apps on dual display set-ups. As it is now, only one monitor can be used.

Great! Time to report Mission Control.

Did anyone mentioned yet that the two-finger-tap is delayed by 1/2-3/4 seconds ? That made minecraft unplayable with the trackpad.

I don't have Lion, but these are generally due to a secondary function of the 2-finger tap (such as something you can probably disable in the gestures preferences). I hate these delays too, you get delays with single clicking when you use "drag lock", as it waits to see if you're going to drag or click before deciding that it's a single click.

Try disabling the two-finger double-tap gesture, if there is such a thing.

If you can't disable it, or there is still a delay, definitely report it as a bug/request! I would hate this!

I already tried everything, still a delay. Will report it to Apple, but I hoped I could get it confirmed in this forum before I do it.

Hold "Option" while resizing a window from the edge. ;) It resizes it from the center. Makes it much easier to make the window bigger widthwise without having to drag the left side out and then the right side.

On a chaptered movie, click and hold the chapter button in QuickTime Player X. A menu showing chapters with thumbnails will drop down.
