I was wondering... Is it possible that Apple got the new trash icon from a "real" 3D rendering?

How Apple gets such realistic icons? It just works in 2D or even in 3D?

Anyone knows?

What is a "real" 3D rendering?

They're not photos.

The original Aqua icons were a hybrid between 2D renderings done in something like Photoshop, and 3D renderings from Cinema 4D and Infini-D 4.5.

I'm not sure what they're using these days. Probably Photoshop and Cinema 4D, though the new trash can definitely looks like it was drawn in PS rather then rendered in C4D.

Have they fixed the 3 finger double tap to define a word? It works on and off.

They changed it to a single tap, not a double tap. Try a single three-finger tap on a word to get it to show up. Double-tapping is going to make it work inconsistently.

I'm on 10.7.4. I'm just asking to see if they fixed it in 10.8 because on 10.7 it's unreliable and doesn't always work. Thanks for the info.

This isn't the thread for that but it always work fine for me on 10.7.4. The wikipedia article takes a bit longer to show up but the definitions works great for me.

It is different but the icons at apple.com doesn't match the ones on Os X.

Some of the icons on that page look a bit unexpected, contrast-wise. Here's the Lion Mail icon compared to the Mail icon Apple put up on that page:

They're doing this for every screenshot and icon to make it more appealing to the user. Old marketing trick ;)

I managed to pull a bigger image from Apple's website and it's been redone like the trash cans in DP4. I suppose it will be put in Safari 6 when the GM build comes out in a couple of weeks.

Nope. Really.

I have to repeat...

The graphic items on http://www.apple.com are always - not just now with Mountain Lion - been different in some way compared to the ones on Os X, so is for the printed material, too.

The same icon - let's say the Trash - is represented with subtle changes in the os manual or on the site with respect to the original icon in Os X.

And it make definitely sense.
An operative system, a book and a web site are three different animals, there is no need to match the graphics.

Has anyone else noticed mds and mdworker (metadata server for Spotlight etc.) popping up every few seconds?

First mds starts running at 50% CPU for a few seconds. When it's done it fires up two mdworker processes at 25% each which also run for a few seconds.

I feel like it's wasting my precious battery life. And since no previous OSes have done this, why should ML have to?

It happens to me too, 40% CPU used by both.
