I bought an 11 and loved it but also just picked up a 12.9. After certain amount of time holding it in left hand and swiping with right while watching TV in the recliner my left arm starts to fatigue. Since that’s the one that I had rotator cuff surgery on, don’t want to mess with that. The smart thing for me is to keep the 11 but I am going to compare side by side this weekend using news+.
If there is not too much difference displaying my favorite magazines, will keep the 11. I like the 12.9 keyboard and some websites obviously show more content, but there are also some websites that look better on the 11.
Am also considering keeping both of them, but we’ll see.

I went for the 11” a couple of weeks ago and it’s just the perfect size for me. I am doing all my usual tasks on it and have left my Macbook Air to my wife.

I went to an Apple store this weekend and had a look at the 12.9”, it looks great but for me it’s just too big.

I am still in that phase were I am amazed at how much I can get done and how portable this little device is. At times I almost feel like a kid looking at it and thinking how cool this device is !

One of the things I did think after playing in the Apple store over the weekend is that I likely won’t ever invest in the keyboard for my 11”. I absolutely LOVED the ASK for my previous 12.9s, but that 11” one is just a bit small.

I’d probably adjust, but I’ve been using a full size bluetooth keyboard (similar to an iMac keyboard), and I’m not sure I’d wanna go quite that small.

In addition, I hate that it’s not just like the ASK because I don’t love the bulk of the folio.

The only drawback is portability with my keyboard - I DID love having an attached one for when I met clients in public places - now I’ll have to use the onscreen and I really don’t like that.

I thought a lot and decided to buy an 11-inch iPad. I hope I do not regret it.

The key of my decision is the versatility. I want a device that can work like a laptop and an one-handed tablet at the same time. I've read pages and pages of this topic and concluded that the smaller iPad is more portable, light and comfortable to use as a traditional tablet.

The 12.9 iPad is more a laptop substitute for using on desk. That’s is not what I need right now.

I heard once that the secret of happiness is to decide. So, I decided. And you guys helped me a lot. Thank you.

Good for you! I never second-guessed the purchase of my 11" til the mini came out, then I wanted a mini so I thought maybe if I just had the 12.9 for my desk, I could justify the mini.

Ultimately I realized the reason I got the 11" was so I could have the best of both worlds. It's a fantastic device!

In all fairness the 11” version isn’t really that much off the 12.9”. Personally I like the bigger screen, I multitask a lot, often while drawing or photo editing in Pixelmator Pro.

I guess that for people that want to use the iPad as a media consumption device only and who find the 12.9 model to be too heavy and big, should get the 11“. Everybody else should get the 12.9.
Personally I am using the 12.9 mostly as a tablet. I do all my work on my MacBook Pro which I find more suitable for the job. Having said that, today I got the iPad keyboard and I am testing it right now. The first impression is that it will definitely not replace my MacBook Pro anytime soon, but it will compliment it.

Just because it's transparent to the end user rather than reserving RAM exclusively for storage doesn't mean it's not happening. It's not like iOS reports the GPU is using xx% of RAM either but you can pretty much expect that it uses a huge chunk when playing games.

Those really high storage scores you got for Performance Test/PassMark? Quite likely in part due to RAM caching. If the storage controller doesn't use RAM, we're more likely to see Crucial BX500 level performance rather than Samsung 970 Pro.

Granted, normal use, I see most of the extra 2GB on 1TB models being available to apps. I think the inner workings of the Apple A12X (all parts of it) would be very interesting to read about. As an SSD enthusiast, I'd love to see how that part works (iirc, Apple bought an SSD maker a few years back and it seems they've incorporated that into their chipsets). Alas, it's all protected IP.

If you look at any 512GB SSD vs a 1TB SSD of the equivalent, the 1TB has double the memory cache of the 512GB. But there is not much of a drastic performance advantage with the 1TB SSD and 1GB of ram cache, vs the 512GB SSD with 512MB cache.

Although, the design is very different on the iPads with the 1TB models having parallelism. Wouldn’t you think that would have more to do with the drastic speed increase with storage?

I highly doubt that the disk-mark test could saturate the cache on a 512GB iPad Pro during the benchmark and provide massively lower read/write numbers, and the same benchmark would not saturate the 1TB iPad Pro cache to prove higher benchmark numbers?

It is literally a test that takes less than half a second.

I think it may just be the overall design of the nand storage setup on the 1TB iPad Pro, and possibly extra cache, and having Parallelism on top of this. And all together it Is just putting out some impressive read/write numbers.

The test taking less than a second is why I think either the test is too short or there's some memory caching going on.

If you enable Samsung Magician RAPID mode, you get insane benchmark numbers, too.

Mind, I don't see why bigger onboard RAM on SSD would make 1TB faster than 512GB. The extra RAM likely just means it can maintain higher performance for a longer period.

Still loving my 12.9...performance on it still unreal.

Been thinking about getting the logitech keyboard to compare it with the apple keyboard

The Logitech Slim Folio Pro? I'm trying that one and the Apple Smart Keyboard Folio. It's not an easy decision, but I think that the Apple keyboard is going to win for the relative lightness/thinness and easy on/off. I do like the Logitech function keys and illuminated keyboard, though.

I’m waiting (for a long time) for the Brydge keyboard for my 12.9. I decided to get it for its more solid MacBook like look and feel. It’s not as light and portable, but I’m happy to use the on screen keyboard for portability anyway.

Returned my 11" for a 12.9". No regrets. I thought the 11" was too tall and narrow in portrait mode and too wide and not tall enough in landscape mode. The smaller aspect ratio of the 12.9" is a lot better for my use cases. Combined with the larger screen size, working with two apps side by side in split screen in landscape mode is a joy.

I’m still rocking the 11” 1TB cellular. Me and my wife watch TV shows on it frequently, using the A&E app. I like the A&E app because it allows full screen support for my iPad 11” (No black bars) it is beautiful! We watch a series every night for like 4 hours straight! Still on season 1 of 5. The screen is plenty big, sometimes I sit it in front of my much larger TV just to watch certain shows, that I cannot get with my satellite provider. I can always plug in HDMI to it, but it’s really not necessary most of the time.

I think a 12.9” would be a beast.

That’s what I’m saying. Why is the 1TB faster in all of the user posted diskmark test. If it is not related to ram caching? Different storage possibly? I dunno lol. I wish there was a guy on here who was internal to apple development who could help with some of these questions.

Caveat, I think you might be conflating iPads with PCs.

On PCs, your CPU, dGPU and SSD are all separate devices. The dGPU and SSD have their own dedicated RAM not shared with the system. The SSD would be connected via bus so it's still going to be limited by bus speed. Hence, given sufficient parallelism on both, your 1TB SSD with 1GB cache isn't going to be much faster (if any) than a 512GB SSD with 512MB cache.

Meanwhile, the A12X combines CPU, GPU and storage controller and system RAM is shared among all three. There's no dedicated RAM for these components. You just have one pool of 4-6GB to be dynamically allocated as required by the system.

I'm guessing the PassMark/Performance Test disk scores on the iPad are getting a speed boost via memory caching ala-Samsung RAPID Mode (which uses system RAM rather than the 512MB-4GB RAM cache soldered onto the SSD). Either that or there's insufficient data to get accurate readings.

By the way, have you tried installing and running Jazz Disk Bench ($0.99) on your 1TB iPad? That allows you to use up to 1GB for sequential test and up to 262,144 operations for the random 4K test. Ran it on A9, A10, A10X and A12 and was pleased to see significant improvement in random 4K tests. I think it would be quite interesting to see results across all the various 2018 iPad Pro capacities as well as be able to compare them with previous gen (I have access to A8X/128GB, A9/128GB, A9X/256GB, A10/128GB and A10X/512GB) to measure storage controller improvements.

Has Brydge provided a potential ship date? I see on their website that it's still available for preorder. The last that I heard was "sometime in May" or "late Spring"

I think that the first 1,000 will be shipped next week, if not already. I’m not in the first 1,000, but my email from them says that they will ship mine in the week of 20th May, but they say it may be sooner as they are ahead of schedule.

Right now I’m sporting both of them, the 12” for the office at the desk as my personal computer next to the workstation, and the 11” at home and for the café. I love having both of them, but feel like I should return the 12.9” (still in the return period) because it’s just nice to have but not NECESSARY... :(

I changed my mind, returned the 11-inch and ordered a 12.9. I’m more excited than I bought the small one, but I hope do not regret.
I was also more excited for the big one. Right now, every morning I‘m facing the decision which one to take to the office. I tell myself „today you‘re gonna take the 11“, just to see that you don‘t need the big one. Then, almost out the door, I return to pack the 12.9“ just because I know when I‘ll be sitting at my desk, it‘ll be so much nicer to have the big screen.

Right now though I‘m typing from the small one and it‘s also such a genius and great device, because it‘s that much more portable and easy to handle. What I really dislike about the big one is portrait orientation which I love on iPad in general. ARGH! Please Apple, just make a 12“ version and we can end this dilemma :D

I’m gonna try. I really want a big size and I guess I don’t need a special portability. I need to take notes and I often sustain the iPad on my chest when I’m on bed. So, I hope the size and weight won’t be a problem, but I can be wrong. We’ll see. When I watched the Apple’s keynote, I immediately said “wow, I need that big ****”. So, I’m giving a chance for the big one (and my heart ).

I jumped on the 12.9” as soon as they released it in 2015. I keep that iPad until March (actually it’s still in the house) I decided to try the 11” of the new one and I love it. I find myself using it way more because it’s much more convenient to carry around.
