Sill considering a 12.9 iPad as my main computer for use at home and occasional travel. I see Amazon selling them $200 off today for the 512 and lower. May just have to grab one as I doubt I would ever run out of storage.

Got the 11“ today as a replacement for my 12,9“ first gen. The 12,9“ was just too big for daily carry next to my company laptop, with the smart keyboard it was heavy as hell. The 11“ seems to be the perfect „in between“ size. It looks great for viewing photos on the go (and also some light edition in Lightroom CC seams perfectly possible).
So far I am very happy with my decision and miss the 12,9” not a bit.

Decided to get the 11 inch for work and portability and so far loving it

Weird having both 11 and 12.9 but the combo is working out great so far

Is there anyone here who has a positive experience using a 12.9-inch ipad as a traditional tablet? For example, in portrait mode and holding hands?

I have average-sized hands and I find it impossible to type on the 12.9" on-screen keyboard without setting it down on something. I can't reach the middle of the keyboard if I'm also trying to hold the device.

I am using the 12.9 mainly as a tablet and I enjoy it. No problems here, but of course I am holding it with both hands, especially for extended periods of time.

I’m sure that is not an one-hand tablet. But I wonder if we can use it like a traditional tablet or just only like a notebook substitute. What would you say?

Everybody is different. Give it a try yourself and see how well it works. I’m using mine half the time just as a tablet for consumption and half the time with a case/keyboard case.

What works best for me in tablet mode though is not having any additional cases attached at that time and use the iPad “naked”.

So do you think the 12.9-inch can be very versatile?

I use mine as a tablet. I use it in portrait mode often for reading forums. Typing on the on-screen keyboard isn’t easy in that mode though. I’d type small things with one hand, while holding with the other, but set it down on a desk or table to type generally.
I have the Brydge keyboard coming soon and I expect to use it at home with they keyboard sometimes and out and about with just the folio cover.

For my needs the iPad cannot replace my MacBook or any other computer running a desktop OS. The reasons are pretty obvious:
* No support for precision based navigation, like a mouse
* The quality of the apps available is not on par with the ones I am using on Mac or Windows. Typical example is Microsoft Office, which lacks many features in its mobile incarnation.
* No support for File System access from all apps. I don’t want to find workarounds for easy tasks. A computer should be versatile and allow me to use the workflow I want/require, not the other way round.
* No support for a desktop class browser. Mobile Safari is good, but there are times where I miss a desktop browser.
* As a laptop it is not as lapable as a Macbook, unless you buy the Brydge keyboard. I already own a Macbook though, so why on earth would I do that?

As a tablet though, the iPad excels. There is nothing better out there. Of course, for the price Apple is asking for, people should really think about other options. For me the iPad is a luxury I allow myself to enjoy.

Yes, using the iPad Pro without a case makes it so much lighter.

I don't use a case for my iPad Pro 11"

That is like having the Most Beautiful Wife/Girl Friend without Clothes on her !!

There is a saying in our part of the world which goes like..."Open lying Money and Open Woman (Without Clothes) can make any Man have bad intentions" !!

Same is the case with this Pretty Baby called iPad Pro, having a Naked iPad is like Exposing your woman stark naked to the world !! God Save You !!

I have a 3M skin install on the iPad Pro.

I also have the smart folio keyboard for carrying purpose but I don't always use that at home.

To make it clearer, I use the iPad Pro without a case at home.

Along with the Smart Folio I also have a carrying pouch.

I got an 11-inch but I always really want a bigger screen. But I was not sure about the size and specially the weight of 12.9-inch.

Despite that, I decided to return the 11 model and get the bigger one. Now, I'm loving that machine. Yeah, it's a little cumbersome, but I can deal with that. I really wanted a big screen and now I have one.

I strongly recommend the 12.9 if you need or want a bigger screen to taking notes, drawing or even working with two apps on the display.

Still using the 11” as my only go to device since I bought it about 6 weeks ago. Been loving the Smart Keyboard addition which has changed the way I use my iPad.

In terms of size I am fine with the 11” and think the 12.9” would have just been too big for me. Keep in my mind that I hardly use 2 apps side by side and generally prefer smaller devices (never gone for a plus or max iPhone).

All in all the experience of using an iPad as my only go to device has been great. As I have said a few times on this forum I am really curious about what Apple can bring to us with iOS 13.

Seems like you adjusted quickly to the 12.9 and prefer it over the 11 inch. Curious if you've traveled with it yet and how it feels to use it as a traditional tablet on the couch or in bed?

Also curious how big/small the people with the 12.9 are haha.

As I said, I’ve always wanted a bigger screen, but I was afraid that size and weight would be very cumbersome. They are not. I can handle it well.

Lol, true. That probably factors into what someone would consider cumbersome. I'm 5'2" and I prefer the 10-11" class iPads. I do have a 12.9 but unless I'm reading comics or annotating PDFs, I reach for the Pro 9.7/10.5.
