In case you have this but haven’t thought of it: In my country this falls under ‘home insurance’ that almost all homeowners have. Which is for all water damage, among others. The deductible per incident is usually below 100 euros.

I think it’s funny how people are trying to somehow say you were wreckless, an amateur, etc. Things happen, you live and learn.

I won't speak for others, but I meant it as a joke. I have three kids. Kids are wrecking balls, and looking away for even a few seconds can lead to ridiculous results.

After this I would been looking if there was a return policy for the toddler ? just kiddin’ but honestly that would have devastated me 100%… harsh lesson learnt I suppose…

Alas, I rather doubt that's the case with most homeowner's policies in the US.

American insurance companies are scum, writing policies that exclude as much as possible and avoiding paying out on the rest whenever possible. That said, it can't hurt if OP were to check his homeowner's policy just to be sure.

Or basically just don't leave your two year old unattended with a multi thousand dollar laptop. Sounds harsh and I don't mean it to but if OP is rich enough to make that 'schoolboy' error he's obviously rich enough to pay for the consequences. Me? I'd be crying for a year.

I agree very immature and stupid move to leave a laptop and water with a 2 yr old kid + the father is calling his own son a monster, if it was a pet that did it everyone would call it cute.

Apple care is like plane insurance

I never took them.

And after ~20 flights and ~10+ computers+iPhone+iPad, would have never use the insurance anyways.

So if my kids destroy my computer(or it could be me!), it will be a hard pill to shallow for sure, but I would save money anyways but not buying the insurance.

I did the math..
My first macbook was purchased in 2011 ..so that would have been $1100 paid in apple care if i had decided to purchase apple care for every macbook ive owned since then..cheaper if i had gone with 3 years for $249. So just ONE INCIDENT in over 11 years of owning macbooks and it still would have cost me less to buy apple care for 11 years than this one repair is costing me.

in case you're wondering what liquid damage repair costs without applecare+..my son was kind enough to provide me with that info. I wish i had bought applecare+ for $100 bucks..id have saved myself $1100 today.

Ouch, that was painful to watch, but thanks for sharing & it seems like you have a pretty good attitude about it.

On the flip-side, I have had a MacBook go completely bad on me and replaced with a brand new, specced up unit 2.5 years after use. I buy on mobile and first generation macs. Because Apple isn't always the quickest to fess up to broader issue until a lot of noise has been made.

Oof, that sucks! Sorry it happened to you. Thanks for sharing -- a good reminder that even stepping away for a few moments can be long enough.

Isn’t insurance a thing?
I don’t pay for Apple Care because I already pay my insurance company and/or my credit card company to cover accidental damage and extended warranty for me.

@hefeglass, save your receipt and check your policies, I’d say.
Intentionally pouring water onto a keyboard is not accidental. You better have a different story to tell.

You can use this to your advantage some day too. Need a new TV but the SO is opposed? Introduce your kids to the wonderful world of Wii Sports. Without straps, of course.
One round of Wii Sports bowling and you got a nice TV upgrade for yourself. ?

A child or a person with special needs may act with intent while not understanding the consequences of their actions, and it's usually possible to pay an additional premium to protect against this kind of damage. From personal experience, telling the truth when making an insurance claim works just fine - you just have to make sure you're paying for the correct policy. And such a policy is likely to be quite a lot cheaper than paying for Apple Care or similar insurance policies for each individual tool or tech toy you purchase.

For non accidental damage, here in Quebec it’s under warranty for a reasonable amount of time no matter what the company policy is.

Ex: for an big appliance like an oven it’s around 10 years, not sure for a computer but I guess around 5 years, phone 3 years. So less need for extended warranty.

Apple gave me a brand new pair of beatsX after 2 years (bought second hand on marketplace!) with this warranty.

I just recall, if you paid with your Visa (maybe MC too?), there is a accidental damage warranty straight from them, included.

My friend got his new 65/75 inch tv destroyed by his son and got it replaced for free.

Come on. They're all monsters. God had to make them so adorable to make us want to kiss them instead of murdering them.

I don't have kids, but yea... my mom has stories of me just randomly destroying things. I think she let me destroy one thing, something she didn't care about and apparently that was enough to get it out of my system.

I would never leave kids out of my sight to be honest until they are old enough to think logically.
