I'm on the 16.1 beta so I can't unless I do a restore. If this fixes the problem I might just do that though.
That's right. If its not resolved I'm going to call apple tomorrow to get a replacement. Hopefully they have them and what should I say to avoid doing restores etc which we know does not work.

I'm willing to bet more people have this issue and don't realize it. If they use a passcode vs face ID they wont get the message to enter their passcode as the phone restarted. Others may not pay attention as to why it asks for the passcode sometimes. For most that truly have this issue it only happens when charging and I rarely look at my phone screen when charging. Sadly this means many will not be reported to Apple so I'm not confident if and when it can be fixed via an update.

Same issue here on Pro Max 256 gb / 16.0.1.
I'm starting to think it happened after the .1 update, because in the first days it never happened. But yesterday it crashed three times, two in charging connected to an iMac and one with an iPad charger.
In the first days it didn't crash even during the transfer from the old phone, and that time it lasted more than 1 hour attached to charger.

So some good news this morning... Last night I just decided to do a clean install using the 16.0.2 IPSW. As much as I didn't want to do that, I had to know if that would fix this issue since this was driving me crazy. I set the phone up as new and downloaded every app one by one. I spent about 3-4 hours setting everything up. It sat on my Belkin 3 in 1 MagSafe charger overnight for around 5 hours and I woke up this morning and didn't have any reboots. I am going to monitor this some more but at this time I believe the issue has been fixed.

I had 1 crash on the wire after the update yesterday. Had my phone on the wireless charger over night and no crash. I have gone a night before though where it doesn’t reboot. Also had it in sleep focus with no aod. I wonder if it happens regardless of the aod being on or off? Keep us posted and I’ll do the same. I think I’ll still call apple. I hope if we find a solution they will let me return the replacement instead.

This is the first night for me it hasn't rebooted. Mine is always in a sleep focus with the AOD off. It may be worth trying a clean install and setting up as new. I know how much of a hassle it is, I'm still setting up some final touches/home screen things this morning but it may be the solution. I will continue to monitor and I'll report back here if I have any other info.

True but think I’ve seen some posts where people did that and no luck. I’m waiting to hear if a swapped out phone fixes the issue. That route would be a lot easier. Please keep me posted if you get any reboots plugged in or on the wire.

how long is it on the Magsafe charger before you see a kernel panic?

and what is a kernel panic to you? solid color stuck on screen, solid color then reboot, or a reboot (apple logo) alone?

If the latter, may not be cause for concern. Random reboots are usually buggy iOS more than anything.

--

also skimming the thread it seems only 2-3 people have this so far , just with lots of replies? Not discounting their experience, just trying to gauge how many people have chimed in about this. It may be an isolated hw issue in the end

It varies, it usually ends up happening while my phone is idle and asleep so I don't always see it. I have seen the apple logo briefly when it does it. But it was happening on wired charging, MagSafe charging and Qi charging. I knew it was rebooting because I would wake up in the morning and had to enter my PIN and my lock screen widgets were locked. I also had an entire page of panic logs.

Gotcha thank you.

Hmmm, I can totally understand being concerned but it doesn't sound like a hardware issue. Might be worth getting a replacement unit to isolate especially if you got other gripes with your unit.

The pin code ask is an indicator of a reboot.

I've seen the wonkiest things on x.0 releases, in logs too, I recall I think iOS 6.0 of all releases had random reboots opening camera app. It was startling but it got worked out by .1 or whatever. But almost no one reported on it I guess cause people either dont care or shrug it off.

I think... iOS 11 or something had a similar reboot issue overnight iirc. definitely one of the post -iOS 7 releases that wasn't the dumpster fire of 7 which had its own onslaught of issues, including reboot haha

if you saw a single color flash as soon as or minutes after putting on the charger, I would be alot more concerned but not going to fault you for still being.

I even saw my series 7 just randomly reboot on watchOS 8 once or twice this year, something I have never really seen on a watch.

I was having this issue too.

I looked through the analytics logs (Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data), specifically the SystemMemoryReset logs for each time it happened and the Tesla app was called out specifically. I deleted the app and re-installed it and I haven't had the issue since (only been two nights though). I'm wondering if something got corrupted when transferring data from my old phone. Hoping the issue is fixed.

You guys are so patient… I got a replacement one and never had any issues with it. Dealing with Apple for a couple of hours to get one sent was enough stress for me. Hope everyone can get a good working phone soon. They make it sound like software issue, but I believe it isn’t.

It was my birthday yesterday and I got this crazy idea just to let fate decide and even if the 14 Pro Max was hard to get I would buy one if one showed up.

The first place I went to (Rogers here in Canada) actually had one in the back! But it was black and only 128 so no go there. Everyone else was out. I was pissed off but hearing that the camera module was still giving people problems after the “fix” and now this - well I’ve officially given up looking for the next few months or just stay with my 12 Pro Max and wait for 15.

You pay through the nose for a phone that has this many problems?

It sure is beyond frustrating to have any issues with a $1500+ brand new phone hence my reply above. My phone has no issues at all and I thoroughly enjoy it. Plus I bought it only because my business pays for it.

Yeah I just checked mine and an other persons iPhone 14PM, whilst using the Eufy security app to view recordings the iPhone shuts down and restarts creating a panic analytic log.
Yeah the eufy app almost always forces my 14 pro to restart. I’m also getting the problem at other times but it’s mostly if I check a eufy camera notification.

I still haven’t had a reboot since doing a clean install of 16.0.2 and setting up as new. It’s been two days now. I feel confident my phone is fixed now.

Last reboot I had was thur an hour after installing .02 plugged in. I’ve spent all day trying to make it reboot yesterday at work on the charger which was easy before. I’m still not holding my breath but maybe it needed one more reboot after the update lol. Looks like feigongwong had 1 reboot after the install and none sense? This is way better so far than before .02. Anyone else finding it better on .02?

As frustrating as it is for this to happen with such an expensive product, anything that is mass produced will invariably have defective units that slip through the cracks. Having a flat 0% defect rate is impossible to achieve. That would imply that humans, machines, and manufacturing techniques are perfect and they are anything but. I was the IT admin at a manufacturing company and also worked in R&D as well. It was a small company.

I understand nobody is perfect. As the richest company in the world, they should not fight over $35 shipping fee and just send a replacement one when customer did everything you could possibly do to fix the issue and still having multiple problems. That’s after spending $10k+ for their products overall. Plus they said they see nothing wrong on their end when mine was clearly rebooting every couple of minutes after factory reset and software update.
