I had one reboot last night since updating to 16.0.2 on Thursday, although unlike the reboots on 16.0.1 I had, this one didn't generate a panic log.

I received my new iPhone 14 Pro on Friday 9/16/22 and had been charging it nightly, as is my routine. I was noticing that it required the PIN each morning, but I didn't think much of it as I knew 16.0.1 had just come out and I assumed other auto updates were happening overnight.

On Saturday 9/24/22, I placed it on my Anker wireless charger while I worked at my desk. I watched as the phone spontaneously rebooted twice within an hour. I checked the analytics log and I saw that there had been a panic log every night since I received the phone. The panic/reboots were within 30-60 minutes of the phone going on the charger.

I decided to erase and restore the phone in case any software glitches had occurred during original setup. At first, I couldn't get a tethered backup to happen because the phone was crashing during the backup. Finally, on 3rd attempt, I completed a backup and then erased and restored.

Last night, the same panic/crash occurred while on the charger as all previous nights. So now I've observed this crash happen while tethered to PC power, while on wireless charging, on iOS 16.0.1 and 16.0.2, and with a fresh reset.

This must be a bug that is baked into iOS right now, or I received defective hardware. In the past, I had an iPad Pro that suddenly stopped charging. It was diagnosed by Apple as having a dead internal charging subsystem. I'm not messing around with a phone issue that seems related to charging. I contacted Apple Support this morning and I'm doing a return / replacement.

Something definitely changed with 16.0.2. Still no crashes since Thursday and I’ve tried very hard to get it to crash.

I wanted to add my 2 cents to this. I'm having the exact same problem, I have the 14pro, not the max. I scheduled a visit to the Genius Bar (I have the applecare) and they ran diagnostics and looked at the crash reports which are filled with Kernel Panics and said "yeah, it looks like it's bad hardware", so they replaced the phone, I transferred everything from the old phone to the new (which took well over an hour) using the setup wizard, then went home yesterday and plugged it in as usual when I went to bed...same thing, phone rebooted several times during the evening. I doubt all these phones have bad hardware, and it is extremely unlikely that I received 2 in a row with the same problem from the Apple store. This must be a bug. I would feel better if I knew Apple were aware of this, and working on it...

Try restoring and setting up as new. Don’t use your backup. Since doing this I have had no reboots.

Like many of the other users here have stated, I'm a power user, if I did that, It would take a very long time to get it back to the way it was. I'm hoping Apple is aware of the issue and working on a fix.

Yeah I hear you, it took me about 4 hours to set everything up again. It seems like the only solution at the moment though. It was happening on the 16.1 beta as well. Maybe they can fix it on 16.1 beta 3.

You are on 16.0.2 and have updated all your apps? I’m wondering if it’s a 3rd party app that’s leaving something residual. I just find it odd mine stopped after thur and I was having several a day pre .02. Definitely does not sound like hardware. Very strange. I think a few on here have found it’s not happening as often. For others it seems setting up as new fixes it to but that’s a pain.

Also but very far fetched maybe the circuitry burns in and it goes away. I’m scratching my head as to why mine stopped. I didn’t setup as new all I did was update to .02

Any guesses?

I've just set mine up as new. It is bare bones, as default as possible. I'm going to let it sit on charger today and overnight before I give it to FedEx and see what happens. Erase / Restore didn't stop the problem for me. If I have to go forward with my return-and-replace, it sounds like it could be a month before the replacement arrives.

Ask for a senior advisor and insist. They have devices put aside for warranty replacement, and they can ship it in a day or two. They’ll 100% fight over it, but eventually do it for you. Mine arrived in 2 business days.

So for some setting up as new fixed it. For some replacing the phone and same issue. For others updating to .02 fixed it after maybe 1 reboot. This issue is so perplexing. Doesn’t sound like hardware at this point. Some software culprit but no idea.

Well after 3.5 days of being rock solid it finally rebooted when I took it off the charger a few min ago it asked for pw after restart. I’ll keep an eye on it. Hopefully it’s less on .02 as that indicates software.

Is everyone experiencing this using a magsafe case by chance? I have noticed several reboots today alone. I just got my 14 Pro yesterday, apple mag safe case

It’s both mag safe and wired but only when charging. You’re on the 16.0.2? That seems to be a bit more stable but not perfect.

Yes I'm on 16.0.2 and I'm getting reboots randomly several times a day when not even connected to power. How do you see your panic log? Can't seem to find it in the settings.

Probably going to contact Apple today since I got my phone only 2 days ago, this is kind of ridiculous lol.

I asked about the magsafe case in my previous post since my screen will go black for a few seconds, I assume its restarting at that point, then the screen comes back on and I hear the magsafe case sound. Probably more of the result of restarting and not the cause.

Edit: Mine is the regular Pro model, not Max

I decided to set up as new but also installed my essential 3rd party apps. They're not crashing my iPhone 12 Pro on 16.0.2. If this 14 Pro can't run my essential apps without crashing, what's the point? Anyway, got up this morning, and sure enough there was another overnight crash and panic log while on the charger. I'm off to Fed Ex drop off this morning.

Spoke to Apple support, then a senior advisor. He created a ticket for me to track this. I'm making note of all the times I notice it crashes/restarts, and what, if anything, I was doing on my phone at the time. We're going to touchbase on Thursday. It's already happened like 3 or 4 times today. Its pretty bad. Oh, just as I'm writing this its happened again.

Can support pull the panic logs remotely and if so do they ?

Yes he pulled logs from my phone but said he didn't see anything out of the ordinary at this point.

He wanted me to finish enrolling my phone into my work's remote management - my company uses AirWatch to allow for work email and Teams to be installed on peoples personal devices. Since doing it, I think its made it even worse.

Interesting. According to the log I had a kernel panic on 9/21. I was running iOS 16.0.1 at the time and the phone was plugged in. Haven’t had any other issues though.

I got my 14promax on release day. started noticing frequent reboots. waking up to pin to unlock phone. I talked to online support (which was awful), they sent me to a store. the genius bar quickly replace the phone after being able to demonstrate the phone would reboot within 2 mins of plugging into power. several panics in the logs.

The new phone is still rebooting, on MagSafe or Qi desktop charger.

It just rebooted plugged into a lightning cable.

Each time i transferred the data directly from my old phone to the new one. the thought of doing a clean install gives me heart palpitations...

Software is up to date.
