I got my 14promax on release day. started noticing frequent reboots. waking up to pin to unlock phone. I talked to online support (which was awful), they sent me to a store. the genius bar quickly replace the phone after being able to demonstrate the phone would reboot within 2 mins of plugging into power. several panics in the logs.

The new phone is still rebooting, on MagSafe or Qi desktop charger.

It just rebooted plugged into a lightning cable.

Each time i transferred the data directly from my old phone to the new one. the thought of doing a clean install gives me heart palpitations...

Software is up to date.
Unfortunately I think a clean install and setting up as new is the only fix at the moment. It seems to be a software issue and not hardware. My 14 Pro has been perfect since doing that, I haven't had one reboot or any other issues.

I may do this at some point, but holding off for now. Are there any tips or lessons learned when setting up as new?

I already learned to export my Google Authenticator 2factor app to my iPad.. iCloud photos enabled, will take pictures of all my home screen pages and folders on my iPad to reference after wiping and setting up as new.

That's pretty much it, when you go to the app store you can see your previous app downloads and basically just go through the list and download what you want. My 2FA apps are also on my iPad and MacBook Pro. Obviously just make sure they are setup and active so you don't lose access to anything. First apps I put back on my phone were Authy and Bitwarden so I could login to all my apps easily.

I’m going to hold off for now. Some are getting new phones same issue and others are restoring as new and may or may not get it. I hope we can find the culprit. I just don’t get why my phone was rock solid for 3.5 days.

Wanted to share my experience and I am SO HAPPY I'm not the only one.

iPhone 14 Pro Max. kernel panic with the same error as everyone else. Don't have Eufy installed tho. Happens mostly on MagSafe charger. I went to Apple and they swapped my phone with no problem, but I've still got the issue.

So far, it happens with all of these scenarios:

Original phone 16.0.1
Original phone 16.0.2
Original phone 16.0.2 (Reset and restored form backup)
New phone 16.0.2 (Restored from Original phone backup)
New phone 16.1 B2 (Still on Original phone backup)
New phone 16.1 B2 (Completely reset and setup as new) [Really thought this was going to solve it but nope]

Can't seem to get away from this problem. Really love the phone so I hope apple can fix it soon...

Hello guys, I'm having the same issues you all are reporting with my new 14 Pro bought the 16/09. It restarted every night while charging since then. With either version 16.0.1 and 16.0.2
I've started asking to apple support the 22/09 and since then i've tried few procedures
Full restore from backup with DFU, did not help
Full restore from backup with recovery mode, did not help
Optimized charging disabled, did not help (i noticed that it does not work actually, phone goes straight to 100%)
Uninstalled Eufy app, did not help

After few days of frustration i also noticed a sort of a pattern, it only happens when battery is charging between 90-95% (especially 93%) and the phone its in idle.
Since my local apple store does not have a replacement unit available and i'm not happy to wait days/week to get a replacement i started troubleshooting on my own.
And so far the only thing that worked for me (as of now two nights without reboots) is disabling background app refresh

Let me know if that helps anybody, i guess we have to wait some software update since many of you are actually having same issue with replacement unit...

I've been having a total nightmare with my 14 Pro. This is my second unit, Apple replaced the first one after it went into a reboot loop a few days after initial setup using iCloud backup restore, twice. The replacement unit has done the same after an iCloud backup restore and is now in its second day after a restore from a Mac backup, but today it's crashed a few times while sitting idle on a lighting cable.

Here's a few crash logs from today:

No crashes for me so far and this was after transferring all my data to the new phone. I have to say - apart from contacts - that I miss setting up from scratch, Apple
makes it too easy.

Yes, after all my carping about possible hardware issues I found what I wanted - iPhone 14 Pro Max in the colour (white) and capacity (512) and bought it unopened from another MacRumors.com member, and I’m totally satisfied. I like others who travel a lot need that sim tray and that is the biggest reason for me upgrading from my 12 Pro Max. And, I had to go to the Rogers store here in Canada as Apple didn’t even try to transfer the eSim in the process up here in Canada - at least that is how it went for me.

Is there any patterns how the panic on your phone happen?
Mine happened every time i join a video chat from a certain app, which is annoying.
Other ppl i know in the same video chat and using Iphone 14 Pro Max didn't encounter any phone panics
Not even sure if it's a software or hardware problem.

Does anyone know what the panic log means or maybe provide any clues?

The panics today happened while the phone was sitting unused and locked while charging via lightning cable.

About three hours ago I switched it to charge on a generic Qi pad (not MagSafe) and it hasn't crashed since.

So my 14 Pro crashed 14 times yesterday (what a coincidence) - I just realized today that I disabled iCloud photos yesterday at approximately 5 PM and it hasn't crashed once since then....

I am starting to wonder if its related to uploading all the bazillion photos I had from my old phone - because when you plug your iPhone in, it triggers several background processes to begin, like iCloud backups, iCloud photo library syncs/uploads..

I'll report back later today if I had any crashes, but if I get none today that will point the finger at the iCloud photo upload process strangely enough. Maybe one of my photos got corrupted when I restored my device from my 13 Pro's icloud backup? - and it keeps hanging trying to repeatedly upload it? Not sure yet

I'm pretty sure iCloud Photos is the culprit in my case too - my ~900GB photo library is the only thing that takes 3 days to download and start processing, which is when my reboot loop problems have tended to start.

To test whether this is an A16 / 14 Pro problem, or a general iOS 16 problem, I've got my 256GB 14 Pro and a 256GB 11 Pro both setting themselves up with my iCloud backup. Today's kernel panics aside, if the 14 Pro goes into its reboot loop in the next day or two and the 11 Pro does not, I think we can point to a hardware/software interplay on the 14 Pro rather than a generic iOS 16 problem.

I'm not sure which would be better though... if only the 14 Pro is affected, does that mean I can never restore my data to a latest generation iPhone??

Everyone experiencing this should be contacting Apple Support and having a ticket/incident created - politely resist the recommendation to take it to an Apple Genius bar and have it swapped out IMO. Ask that a senior support specialist on the phone pull your phones crash logs. The more people report this, the higher priority it gets to be fixed.

If you have all your photos on your 14 Pro after restoring your previous devices backup onto it, try disabling iCloud Photos in the devices settings. As I said in my previous post, I think this was my culprit. It does iCloud backups ok - but iCloud Photo library is a different process. (Settings, Photos, iCloud Photos - disable)

Any chance MacRumors can pick this up as a story? Maybe they can get some pressure on Apple for a fix/statement? My 14 Pro has still been perfect since setting up 16.0.2 as new and not using a backup.

I do have all the photos listed on my 14 Pro but I'm using the Optimise iPhone Storage option to keep the originals in iCloud, so turning off iCloud photos might be okay for testing purposes but not as a permanent solution.

I forgot to mention - one of the times may 14 Pro has ended up in the reboot loop it had been set up as new rather than restored from a backup. I then signed into iCloud and allowed it to sync everything including Photos and Messages.

The phone had already gone into an unrecoverable reboot loop three times prior to this, so I didn't add any more apps or even use the phone, just leaving it locked to do its thing.

Three days later, the phone entered an unrecoverable reboot loop (it would reboot 15-20 seconds after unlocking).

Everything points to iCloud Photos being the problem.

I'm now 24 hours into an experiment with my 14 Pro and an 11 Pro, which have both been restored from my backup to see if the 11 Pro survives past three days and the 14 Pro doesn't.

Wow so many people having the problem now. Mine rebooted at 12:12 am in the mag charger. Hopefully we are on to something with the photos.

Just got a crash while it was sitting on the Qi pad, so today's crashing is definitely not exclusive to Lightning or MagSafe.

It's worth noting that by default, iCloud Photos sync and processing only happens while the phone is connected to power, so all of these crashes could be related to that.

So to test this you can turn off iCloud Photos? If you turn that off will it delete any photos from the phone and iCloud or just temp pause any new photos from being uploaded by the phone? I assume it would not harm anything to turn it off for a week and turn it back on later where it will catch up?

My first 14p rebooted at the hello screen after factory reset only when on lightning charger. Not on MagSafe. Never thought it was a software issue in my case. They have to fix this bs asap.

Maybe. My theory is that it is related to on-device processing of photos for face and object recognition, so turning off iCloud Photos will probably not prevent that happening if you have already downloaded them to the phone.

I'd be very surprised indeed if the crashing was related to a simple network operation like uploading or downloading photos - complex processing is a far more likely culprit.
