So lastpass.... bit late I reckon

Anyone still paying for lastpass by now has lost his mind especially when Bitwarden is safer and free . I think most people who still on Lastpass do not follow tech news and continue to use their "password manager" as they are very confident its secure.

Big news today:

Apple is going to create a Half-Baked UI for its password system.
Probably, but I personally welcome the competition in the space.

Unfortunately most people will default to the free / included app which may put companies like Agile Bits at a disadvantage.

The upside is that “the masses” will have better security.

Interesting to see how good it will be.
Yeah, I'm curious. I feel that this is going to be a walled garden solution, so anything outside of iOS/macOS will not be supported

We'll see about the protections they offer. I suspect on the integration side, it will be done extremely well. finally with this app will they impose performance, usage, or UI penalties for non apple password managers. They do this for third-party browsers.

It seems lot of people forget this (mainly in Apple password manager thread): you can continue current password manager AND use Apple one too if they release one. Don’t need pick one. 2 be good idea cos if 1 failed for whatever reason you have other one to access.

I have hit my first "con" on Bitwarden. You can't have separate vaults. The way I was told it is to be done is to have 2 separate accounts which means 2 (or more) emails and not to mention will lose any premium benefits you have or buy premium for the other accounts too.

The problem is sync. I am currently using dual setup for reasons of my own (enpass+Bitwarden) and its a pain to update both of them. Inconvenient.

I got same. Bitwarden and Enpass. Yes it take bit more effort to remember add password on both but I don’t think it is pain for me through.

Don’t need pick one
I have to disagree, you run into issues synchronizing them, trying to remember which app has that specific password. iOS and browsers aren’t really set up to support more then one password manager.

If you need multi platform support then apple’s password app isn’t for you

Ok guys. Apple passwords app out. Let’s party.

The big question is if you can attach files (photos of passports, PDF's, texts files, etc)
The old guard that forced subscriptions on everyone must be crapping themselves right now. Their entire company just became a feature that's free. Admittedly the Mac market is relatively small but this is ultimately beneficial to consumers.

It’s crazy that in 2024, the main competitor is subscription-based and written in Electron. From a company with +1000 employees.

I hope this news forces more innovation from their side. Last years all I’ve seen is a slow death by corporate investing

they probably saw the writing on the wall a while ago. as much as I dislike 1P for forcing cloud hosting of existing on premises vaults (not the subscription part), their managed offering is going to make alot of inroads in a ton of industry.

My sole reason for not upgrading from 1P 7 is the removal of local vaults. They add that back and I'll cave on the other issues (electron, subscription).

It's hard to have an opinion about the relative merits of Apple's password manager compared to 1Password's until I've tried it. Up till now, every user-facing application that Apple has made is too limited for me. Apple prioritizes simplicity over features. But, I'll reserve judgement and definitely plan to try it out once it's released.

Competition is good. My only concern is if MacOS/iOS users then abandon sub based 3rd party solutions and prices are raised as a direct result of losing those customers. Yes, the market maybe small.

I'm one of those who returned to 1P and love the simplicity and inclusion of available fields banking, software licenses, attaching pdf's, etc although I (currently) don't require cross platform support.

Let's see what features it comes with.

They won't because their main target now is corporate stuff. And corporates don't want their employees to save local. That's it.

I was kinda tempted to switch from Bitwarden to iCloud Passwords with Sequoia / iOS 18 due to the tighter integration and since I only use Apple devices, but I decided to stick with Bitwarden. Somehow I feel like password manager and email hosting are the two things I prefer keeping totally independent even from the Apple ecosystem just in case.

Who has switched to iCloud Passwords?

If you believe in Apple enough to be totally in the ecosystem, (as you are) it makes more sense to use the new Passwords App when it is released, and keep Bitwarden updated in case there was a problem and you couldn't access Keychain for some reason. Always have a backup, whether it be passwords or email.

Do you mean like adding new passwords and making changes to both the Passwords app and Bitwarden? Sounds like a bit of a hassle.

Yes.

You said you didn't like relying solely on Apple and with your reply, it sounds like that is what you are doing with Bitwarden. To keep both updated takes less than a minute. I don't consider that a hassle, especially with something as important as passwords etc.

I might try it, I guess you are as I don't happen to add or update passwords etc often. the Passwords app doesn't seem to support secure notes though. Do you use encrypted Apple Notes for that?
