Just found this thread. Read quite a lot of it, but not found a simple answer to what I am looking for:

Which alternative Password managers will import reliably from a 1Password 8 exported 1PUX file?

At the moment I am OK with everything about 1Password 8, but I don't want to feel that I am locked in for ever. I want to keep a regular 1PUX exported file (in an encrypted dmg) that would enable me to switch at any time.

I don't have special requirements about local vs cloud, sub vs OTP, etc, just want to know what my options are for switching.

Thanks
1pux is the newer format so I would think it's going to take time for more and more to support importing from it. I know that Bitwarden is working on it.

Thanks for that. Sounds like it is happening but not smoothly for everyone. But encouraging that there will be options.

I just did a trial export/import 1P8 to Bitwarden (free) and it worked, so I feel much more comfortable carrying on with 1P8 knowing I am not locked in by the new 1PUX format.

It wasn't completely straightforward. I was using Safari, and the first two attempts failed because of two items where I had huge content in the Notes section of 1P. Third attempt, after dealing with these, imported successfully but Bitwarden said "no items", like the poster in the link above. I logged in via Firefox and it was all fine. While in Firefox I verified my email. Then tried again in Safari and all was well.

I was able to import it to Bitwarden but it wasn't a perfect import as there are categories that 1P has that BW doesn't like bank accounts, passports, licenses, etc. The attachments also did not import, which isn't a big deal for me. Also, in case you didn't already know, 1Password 7 no longer allows an export. You have to migrate to v8 to do it unless I missed something but it is greyed out for me.

But as far as the data, all the actual passwords seem to be there. I had to review all the bank accounts & credit cards and did have to fix some fields but otherwise pretty good considering and flexible on how you want to use it. My 1P sub expires in July so I have it in case something is missing while I'm in transition. I plan to use Bitwarden along w/ Keychain moving forward. I'm happy to pay the $10 yearly sub to Bitwarden if it helps them develop more features.

I personally don't mind the 1p sub and have find it worth the $ but not putting it on the Mac Store is a no go for me esp for something like this.

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is the issue with Bitwarden hosting the vault? My understanding is that it's encrypted on my device prior to sending it to any hosting server. It seems that a potential issue might arise during a login authentication, which is where an extra layer of security is provided by a Yubico key.

What am I missing?

Appreciate your help.
Are they renting you use of their vault?

Two issues for me:
  • I don’t want to rent software if I can help it.
  • I want my own vault management. Of note, this is what 1PW preached for years before they decided it was no longer compatible with their desire to increase revenues. Fortunately there are alternative options.
And as far as “helping them $” they can produce a new version that coincides with a new OS version and charge for that.

I would add "backup" to this list. With local vaults or vaultwarden on my own server it is easy to do automated backups and restore the data, without compromising security.

I'm trying to delete the standalone 1P vaults in my iCloud but can't seem to get rid of them. They are old from before I migrated to a sub but now want to just make sure all 1p data is deleted from iCloud, turned off any iCloud backups but it's still there. I've tried deleting all the passwords and the vault itself but it won't allow me to do so.

EDIT: I figured it out.

This is not true. I own 1Password 7 and the export feature is still available. I just tried it. It can export to the following formats: .1pif, .csv and .txt. If you aren't able to export then something is malfunctioning.

Related: I recently bought a lifetime license to EnPass because I don't plan to upgrade to 1Password 8. I'm waiting for EnPass to release a version rewritten for Apple Silicon in order to switch. But I just checked the EnPass website and EnPass can import .1pif files. I imagine other password managers can too.

All I know is that this was greyed out for me as the screenshot I attached shows. I tried everything on 2 different Macs and no joy. So if it was malfunctioning, I'll have to assume it was on the 1p side. I had to update to v8 to export into various formats, which did work. My 1P account and all backup files have now been deleted.

I'm thankful to all those in this thread mentioned StrongBox. I've been at a loss to find a replacement for 1Password, and almost ended up using a product that I wasn't fully convinced in. Password security is not something I enjoy stressing, and it seemed that there were no products that met my needs until I found StrongBox.

My criteria:
- a basic app with a lack of unnecessary features that, to me, only suggested more attack vectors.
- my choice of local storage or storage on my preferred cloud. I want to own the database, rather than it reside on a massive hacking target.
- a developer that is using open source and open technologies/standards.
- a developer that invokes trust.
- an application that does not make calls back to the developers server.
- means to export in a format that is transportable.

I've looked at many. Only one met my criteria.

If you have multiple vaults you have to select a vault before beeing able to export it.

I did. I consolidated it all into 1. As I said I tried everything. This doesn't need any more suggestions or comments as the issue was resolved by exporting out of v8 and my account has been deleted and subscription cancelled. Everyone can move on. Thanks.

As you are not the only person using 1PW I strongly disagree. For you it might be OK to store the data on 1PW servers just to export them, for others it is not. So discussing this topic might help others.

Yes it can. Enpass imported my 1Password data with very few issues. When it was obvious 1Password was moving to a subscription-only model, they were still insisting that you could download the standalone and being extremely obtuse and cagey on their tech support message boards about it. That alone convinced me to get rid if them.

I know a lot of people are bent out of shape about the new 1Password, but I actually like it. It feels modern and Mac-like despite having an Electron frontend. It looks good and performs well. It looks expensive when there are free alternatives, but I don't believe those alternatives are as refined or provide as much value. My two cents.

You are not wrong but we are doing it out of principle. They are using twisted business tactics to squeeze more money from users, so we left them for the competition.

-No local storage option
-forced subscription
-forced storage on their cloud.
- Arrogant attitude

yeah...I am not going to be a push over by them. I had no problem to pay $100-200 for the app and upgrade going forward but I do not like to be attached to a monthly rental (pay or else) , especially with my passwords vault.

I was less concerned about where Agilebits was storing my data and more that they made storing it in iCloud - where I keep everything else - impossible. Combine that with the subscription, which I had NO interest in getting, and they made it easy to fire them.

I have opted for a weird solution. Enpass+Bitwarden extension.

Enpass is the closest thing for an app like 1password , and while its very similar it has little annoyances that the developer does not seem to care about fixing (or too small of a team to fix) and their browser extension have a bit of issues auto filling on some sites. So now I use enpass as a local app and Bitwarden on some browser as an extension.
My hopes that Enpass grows in the future and becomes better. (Or Bitwarden release a local app with an assistant like 1PW, which I do not see happening)

I do not like my passwords store on a cloud, but since Bitwarden is FOSS (reviewed by many and any one), it encrypts locally before sending it to the cloud, and its free I guess its ok especially as a backup solution if my local backup get corrupted or my hdd dies.

@MisterSavage

Does Bitwarden fill in drop down menus? I have a site that uses drop down menu for the credit card date , and while its stored in Bitwarden it does not seem to be able to auto fill that. At least idk if I can make it do that.

I think so, but you might have to dig through some of the site's HTML to find what you need to specify.

Those are the reasons I have left 1Password too. Also, my 1Password vault was less than 5MB. Hosting my vault on AgileBit's servers would seem more sensible if the vault were much larger, but I think it's nuts to pay them $36/year to host such a small file.

EnPass also just released version 6.8.2 which is now native for Apple Silicon. So, I am now fully switched over to EnPass and have removed 1Password from my Mac. EnPass is not as pretty as 1Password 7 and its browser extensions aren't quite as slick, but I'm mostly satisfied.

Enpass really need to work on the autofill and saving custom fields. I had enpass trying to fill my DNS entry on my router with Credit Card numbers as suggestions.

Bitwarden (and 1password) is much better on that aspect.

I haven't switched yet and i know it's only one dev but this really is a big contender on my list. Pretty, 1Pass imports ok, good reviews, cheap

Its on the suggested list on the first post
