I Love my iPad!

The device I use most.
Reading is wonderful on it.
Writing a lot on the go, when thoughts are moving and freshly appearing. Totally wonderful! And a lot more then I thought I would before I had iPad.
Not so much on the mini I had, much more on my 9'7
Next will be the PRO 12' something...

Had both MBAir MBP
iPad fills that just fine and much more comfortable. Easier to take out and write on.

Larger work, overviews, putting things together I do on my iMac.

Did I say, I Love my iPad :p

I thought the same. The iPad was the device I used the most and thought I loved the most. I then thought about how everything was more cumbersome on it and tried to revisit (force) more laptop use again. Could not go back to iPad.

As mentioned above I got into the habit of using iPad because laptops weren't great for the same use cases yet at the time. They were too hot and noisy. Now laptops caught up.

Same. I do everything on mine. I could probably make a list at LEAST 20 items long containing just content creation scenarios that I use my iPad for. It's the computer I have dreamed of having since I was a kid.

Again, it seems like you're trying to convince people to do what you did. Like if they REALLY think about it they'll magically realize they don't REALLY like their iPads anymore. Just stop.

I'm not trying to convince anyone. I just don't buy the idea of the iPad anymore and would like to hear people's experiences. Many are truly enjoying their iPads and that is great!

I haven't had that hot laptops. My latest MB Air 11' was both neat and quite lovely too. I still prefer iPad way over it.

Happy for you that you fell in love with laptops again, just don't hate iPad :p

How have laptops "caught up?"

The 12" rMB still has a keyboard attached, and can't be held like an iPad. Nor can you lay in bed comfortably with it. Nor does it work as well for touch screen uses.

Also, you can't lay in bed with it, like an iPad. And it doesn't work for touch screen.

Don't forget you can't lay in bed with it, like you can with an iPad. It also doesn't have touch screen.

Then you also can't lay in bed with it comfortably, nor use touch screen for it.

I recommend that you look into the shift in battery life/clock speed/heat management that happened around 2013 starting with the MacBook Air.

I would say a laptop is way better to use in bed. But it doesn't have a touch screen to use in bed (except if Surface Laptop or the like).

A touch screen will be missing for you in bed.

You want to touch the screen when in bed.

Here you have five more

21. Multitasking is so bad compared to a laptop
22. Connectivity is bad and USB C should be the port
23. The mouse/trackpad is a big missing part for anything work related
24. Charging is slow and the quick charger should come with it
25. The camera bump is not a sensible disposition

21. Multitasking is so good compared to a laptop. Easy to stay focused but still have quick access to other resources.
22. Yes, I agree.
23. Meh, I'm in different.
24. I easily get through a day and charge while I sleep. On heavy use days I charge during lunch, etc.
25. Yes, I agree. But it does not detract from usability in anyway so I don't consider it a valid point.

And that is the one very good point, except if you - like me - like minimalism and owning less stuff.

My MBP pretty much stays in my safe unless I'm doing some type of music creation.

My iPad is with me (basically) 24/7, and I can have it out, online, and doing what I need done in a matter of seconds.

I am a minimalist as well, but the convenience and utility the iPad provides vastly outweighs any minimalist tendencies I may have.

Thanks for sharing, in future could you please write your thoughts down and just pop them in the closest bin?
They will find their way to me be assured of that.

As a travel blogger and artist, I ditched my MacBook awhile ago. I've actually been getting by with an iPad mini & iPod touch for the last few years. I do all my blogging, photo & video editing on my iPad and take photos with my iPod touch. An iPad/iPod setup is so much more compact and portable than a MacBook and dslr setup with multiple lenses.

Lately tho, my video editing has gotten more intensive with the inclusion of a drone that shoots 4K video. So I want to upgrade to an iPad Pro. I've edited on my friends iPad Pro, and it is amaaaazing. So fast. I would also like to replace my sketchbook and pens with an Apple Pencil, so the iPad Pro makes further sense.

I'm also going to upgrade my iPod touch to an iphone(mainly for the camera). To me shooting and editing on iOS devices is a dream. So portable & powerful. May not be for every photog/videographer...but totally works for me. I'm a convert. I do have a go pro for action shots. But my kit is so much more portable now compared to lugging around what I used to all over the world. I would never go back to those days.

1. iPad is in my opinion a very bad consumption experience except for reading - and for reading e-ink is better. Regarding browsing see p. 5 below. Even for videos I miss infinity angle as a laptop and even the screen size on iPad Pro 12.9 is a little small for video with 4:3 ratio. BLACK BAR HELL HELLO. And then again the 12.9 is bad for many for reading and provides gorilla arm for desktop use.

For Video 16:9 is better.
For reading I prefer an iPad - comics in particular don't work on the monochrome Kindle. Kindle isn't really better than iPad for reading - sure it works better in direct sunlight and lasts longer, but I can conveniently do quick switches to web browsing or e-mail then come back to the book. YMMV, to me that is a very big advantage (I use cellular iPads, and prefer the iPad mini for reading).

2. It is a third device to maintain and upgrade once in a while.

Fair point.

3. Since release of iPad we've had some great fanless laptops with great battery as well as bigger phones which negates the need for iPad

Fair. I find the 12" MacBook very good, I'm surprised more people don't use it.

4. Things take too long on an iPad except maybe photo editing.
10. Things take too long on an iPad
11. Things just take too long
12. Things take way too long. Try download your tax information, retirement information etc., make a budget, draft an email and setup a meeting (with bank in this case). Takes FOREVER on an iPad. Few minutes on a laptop.
13. Simple things take too long
14. Things take too long even though the device is fast. It is the workflows of it all.
15. You may be better off with a laptop and phone combo
16. Complicated things take too long

Please give concrete examples. I can neither disagree nor agree if you just keep repeating yourself like a parrot.

* How are you downloading your tax information? Isn't there an app for this?
* Retirement information? You finished your degree in 2016 and now you're retiring? How are you downloading this retirement information?
* Make a budget? For what? What do you envision the process to be like for making a budget?
* Draft an e-mail? How is the mail app not sufficient to draft an e-mail?
* Setup a meeting with a bank? Does that not involve just calling the bank? How are you doing this?

5. Browsing experience is very bad if you - like me - hate mobile optimized websites. And NO, I won't use some third party browser.

This is largely a matter of opinion, but I prefer mobile optimized websites. They are, by design, focused with less clutter and ads. What websites are you visiting that have such terrible mobile experiences?

6. You have to hold it. No really. Think about it. If you are not holding it, it is even more a pain to use. Kickstand anyone? (though I will not buy a Surface either)

You are quite out of date. Get an iPad Pro with a Smart Keyboard.

7. Developers have not released its potential yet and there are still many unoptimized apps for pro versions which don't take advantage of the screen real estate or power

Depends. For example, Affinity Photo is actually a really good iPad Pro program.

8. You still need a laptop and if you really think of it, you may not also need an iPad
9. New models are very expensive

This is rather subjective. "If you really think of it" depends very much on who "you" are, yes?

17. On screen keyboard covers much of the screen

Smart Keyboard

18. iPads are in my opinion not great for work except drawing
19. Even office apps - the most basic personal computer apps from way back - are not comparable to full PC versions and a pain to use with external keyboard and no trackpad

I can accept these points. The office apps aren't really that amazing on the iPad Pro.

20. In a few years a 2-1 combo or iPad itself should be more ready. Don't put up with having to own that many devices in 2017

This is a fair point. The iPad Pro is an evolving device.

Out of my laptop, iPad, and smartphone, my iPad is definitely the device that I need the least. In fact, I don't need it at all. However, it's still the most convenient of the three for casual web browsing, social media, reading emails, and a few other light tasks where it's nice to have a screen larger than my phone, but it's not necessary to get out my laptop. That's all I really want from my iPad or any tablet really. It's never going to replace my laptop or phone, but on many (if not most) days it gets more use than either. It's the device on my nightstand that I reach for when I first wake up to browse the news, my email, and social media. Again, I know that I don't need my iPad in the same way that I need my phone or laptop, but in the years that I've owned a tablet, I don't think that I've gone a single day without using one. I can't say the same for my laptop.

Find the OP hilarious as things are much faster for me on iPad than my Mac. The MacBook is laughably slow compared to the new iPad Pro - wouldn’t want to try 4K video editing on those low end Intel chips - LumaFusion on the Pro is fantastic as is Ferrite for audio work.

OP isn't the best at exposition, but I feel his pain especially when he's repeating that it takes too long to do complex workflows on iPad, it's understandable and there is a genuine basis of criticism there.

The fact is iPad was designed as a single task device primarily, hence 1 app takes entire screen as opposed to a Mac where it's normal to have several overlapping windows. Hence drag and drop operations, going back and forth and interacting among different apps is more efficient and faster on laptops. It's just an inherent trait of the OS design.

I have tried almost every iPad (also mini and pro) since iPad 3 (2012 ish?), and I have used iPad as my primary computer since finishing my degree in the beginnning of 2016 (kept a laptop and have work laptop as well though).

But here are the reasons why I think people should ask themselves if they really do need or want an iPad at this time - and also the reasons why I am simply done after trying to make it a laptop alternative through years.

1. iPad is in my opinion a very bad consumption experience except for reading - and for reading e-ink is better. Regarding browsing see p. 5 below. This would have been a really great YouTube video, you would probably managed to reach a much bigger audience of people that don't care.

What is your point? Have you got anything interesting like other people in this thread who made serious and reasonable answers?

I like hearing people's use cases and opposing views also refreshing what the iPad does really well. For now, a laptop is just better for me.

But here are the reasons why I think people should ask themselves if they really do need or want an iPad at this time - and also the reasons why I am simply done after trying to make it a laptop alternative through years.

I'd say this is your main mistake. It is not a suitable laptop alternative yet for many people including me. It either does not run the software I need or is not something you can use comfortably on a desktop all day long with a physical keyboard.

1. iPad is in my opinion a very bad consumption experience except for reading - and for reading e-ink is better. Regarding browsing see p. 5 below. Even for videos I miss infinity angle as a laptop and even the screen size on iPad Pro 12.9 is a little small for video with 4:3 ratio. BLACK BAR HELL HELLO. I disagree. While e-ink is better for reading something like a book or paper, for short term reading tasks like a website it is pretty bad due to slow transitions etc. I don't see much point complaining about the aspect ratio when it's a lot better for anything but watching 16:9 videos. I don't know why people are so bothered by black bars on screen when a display itself typically has bezels that introduce "black bars" around the image even if it filled the whole screen.

2. It is a third device to maintain and upgrade once in a while.

This is true for any device or appliance. I don't think anyone buys a dishwasher without being aware that it needs its filters cleaned every now and then.

3. Since release of iPad we've had some great fanless laptops with great battery as well as bigger phones which negates the need for iPad

This I can agree with. After buying a phone with a 5.5" screen I have used the phone a lot more for quickly browsing the web etc because it's smaller so more convenient to carry even around the house.

4. Things take too long on an iPad except maybe photo editing.

I don't really get this repeated point. Do you mean it is too slow to operate the UI or is the device too slow to process things? Download things? Because I don't find either to be true especially with the iPad Pros.

5. Browsing experience is very bad if you - like me - hate mobile optimized websites. And NO, I won't use some third party browser.

In landscape view most websites should default to a desktop view of the page. In portrait it depends on the site, some are lazy and don't optimize separately for phone and tablet sizes but you can always request the desktop version of a site.

6. You have to hold it. No really. Think about it. If you are not holding it, it is even more a pain to use. Kickstand anyone? (though I will not buy a Surface either)

The Surface Pro kickstand is a great feature I would love to see on the largest iPad Pro. The Apple foldable covers are nowhere near as versatile. Holding the tablet is fine in my experience.

8. You still need a laptop and if you really think of it, you may not also need an iPad

This depends on your use cases. For me hauling my 15" MBP for anything but work is a no go. It's too big and heavy and most of the time I would only need it to look up things, maybe book some tickets or something. The iPad serves that function well at a more compact size and weight.

9. New models are very expensive

They are. They are also about as powerful as Apple's Macbook laptops so it's no wonder they are similarly priced.

17. On screen keyboard covers much of the screen

This is a negligible issue on iPads compared to phones.

18. iPads are in my opinion not great for work except drawing

I agree but other's might find it is a good fit for what they do.

19. Even office apps - the most basic personal computer apps from way back - are not comparable to full PC versions and a pain to use with external keyboard and no trackpad

There is nothing basic about office apps. They are actually hugely complex even if most people don't ever use their complex features. It will take time to port all those features.

21. Multitasking is so bad compared to a laptop
22. Connectivity is bad and USB C should be the port
23. The mouse/trackpad is a big missing part for anything work related
24. Charging is slow and the quick charger should come with it
25. The camera bump is not a sensible disposition

21. Multitasking is acceptable. I rarely need more than two apps to work with at the same time and I understand the screen space limits how many you can use. iOS 11 should improve the usability of multitasking.
22. I agree. Connecting anything to the iPad is dongle hell and they seem to prefer devices connected over WiFi and Bluetooth instead. Which is sensible for many things but it means not being able to use what you may already have for your desktop.
23. I agree. It is a simple thing that would work easily with iOS already as discussed in other threads.
24. I again agree. It's ******** that Apple includes a barely sufficient charger with their flagship tablets.
25. It's not desirable but it's a minor annoyance best. I'm sure they have figured that they can reduce the size and weight of the devices significantly with this compromise.
