I'd say this is your main mistake. It is not a suitable laptop alternative yet for many people including me. It either does not run the software I need or is not something you can use comfortably on a desktop all day long with a physical keyboard.

I don't know about that as I always kept a laptop and always knew iPad would not be a full alternative so I had to keep three devices. But the thing is that iPad is marketed as a true alternative and the annoyance is that it won't cut it for many people.

This also relates to the repetitions about things taking too long on iPads. Firstly, there are the things that iPad just can't do, and then there are the many normal things which takes so long on an iPad, that it is just not the right tool to do it (unless you have very much time and patience of course).

With how portable laptops are these days and with Phone screens getting so big it really does make tablets pretty redundant imo. Why use a Tablet that offers a watered down experience when you can have a full desktop OS experience in a similar form factor. I understand some people like tablets but I'm not one of them.

I have tried almost every iPad (also mini and pro) since iPad 3 (2012 ish?), and I have used iPad as my primary computer since finishing my degree in the beginnning of 2016 (kept a laptop and have work laptop as well though).

I'm amazed it's taken you this long. I bought the iPad shortly after release in 2010. Within a couple of months it got put in a drawer and is still there. It's come out a couple of times, been recharged, updated, played with for 10mins then put back.

The laptop is an excellent design. The handheld touchscreen device is, for most uses, fiddly and slow.

I am amazed too and can't believe it took me so long. Tells me something about habits and I really just became used to use iPad never questioning it before now.

Can't beat the laptop design.

4. Things take too long on an iPad except maybe photo editing.

5. Browsing experience is very bad if you - like me - hate mobile optimized websites. And NO, I won't use some third party browser.

6. You have to hold it. No really. Think about it. If you are not holding it, it is even more a pain to use. Kickstand anyone? (though I will not buy a Surface either)

7. Developers have not released its potential yet and there are still many unoptimized apps for pro versions which don't take advantage of the screen real estate or power

8. You still need a laptop and if you really think of it, you may not also need an iPad

9. New models are very expensive

10. Things take too long on an iPad

11. Things just take too long

12. Things take way too long. Try download your tax information, retirement information etc., make a budget, draft an email and setup a meeting (with bank in this case). Takes FOREVER on an iPad. Few minutes on a laptop.

13. Simple things take too long

14. Things take too long even though the device is fast. It is the workflows of it all.

16. Complicated things take too long

21. Reading this took too long.

Can't beat the laptop design.
For some things, for other things the iPad is superior.

I think you're projecting what doesn't work for you as fact and think its an issue for everyone and its not. I don't even consider myself a heavy duty or hardcore user, but I do like using this more then my laptop for certain tasks.

One size doesn't fit all, and what works you, may not work for others.

Tbh, your list of 20 as I mentioned is largely your perspective on how you use it, not necessary fact.

It explains one man's rationale for making the iPad his main computing device, and what he has done to address many of the pain points of using a tablet, including using workflow to automate otherwise cumbersome tasks.

You are, as always, entitled to your own opinion. Personally, I am a very happy owner of the 9.7" iPad Pro. I can't use it for 100% of my tasks yet, but what I do use it for, I enjoy the user experience very much.

So much so that yes, I am tempted to get the 12.9" iPad Pro as well for home use, even as I acknowledge that it is overkill in every sense of the word.

How we all must differ as my poor laptop get used very little since he first iPad arrived. Just zero competition when it comes to Internet consumption.

Well in my opinion iPad can't even browse properly due to mobile constraints. And it does not always work to request desktop version.

The iPad is generally bad for consumption in my opinion. Too few angles to adjust view.

That articles reverse argumentation is just silly. It argues that it is a benefit that the iPad is capable of nothing (mostly full screen use) compared to a desktop operating system (multiwindow use). Blinded by a new shiny gadget that is so counter productive that the half could be enough. I am not one bit convinced by these stories.

Working on an iPad can best be described as putting 10 different obstacles in front of you, that you have to solve to do the 1 thing you wanted.

I don't see a laptop as better at all. I have gone iOS only for my computing needs and it has been great. Super easy and straightforward.

My requirements are very limited, but still an iPad won't do it good enough.

Had the same opinion as you for years though, but it was pure habit of using iOS, instead of the great new laptops that came after the release of the newest iPad models.

I am pretty determined to never use an iPad again before at least 10 key issues are sorted out.

That's cool, a laptop should be a better fit then. Easy enough. A tablet isn't for everyone.

I agree with some of your points but they're not enough to put me off my iPad Pro 12". It's the best device for sitting out in the garden with the dogs on a sunny morning and seeing how bad the rest of the world is. :)

1. iPad is in my opinion a very bad consumption experience except for reading - and for reading e-ink is better. Regarding browsing see p. 5 below. Even for videos I miss infinity angle as a laptop and even the screen size on iPad Pro 12.9 is a little small for video with 4:3 ratio. BLACK BAR HELL HELLO. And then again the 12.9 is bad for many for reading and provides gorilla arm for desktop use.

++++++++++++

I could give you 10 reasons to debunk your first complaint.
Here's a couple.

If you find the iPad so annoying, why have you "tried almost every iPad" in the first place?
I'll tell you here:

You have looked for an alternative to carrying a clunky laptop around everywhere.
You're tired of looking for a place to recharge your clunky laptop.
You thought you could find the perfect replacement to a clunky laptop.
There is no one perfect device, but the iPhone is almost there.

I own 2 Win laptops along, with the iPad original, Mac Pro, iPhone 7s and many other devices.
Neither of these alone are perfect or can fulfill ALL of my needs.
BUT..Try and travel across the country for work or play, and you only can take 1 device onboard with you. Try and get through "Customs" or border patrol these days.
Hands down other than my cell..... I'm traveling with any iPad over a laptop.
Heck, I still use iPad1 as my home theatre remote and email device while on the couch.

Apple releases a new iPad for $329, and that's too expensive??
Considering that's a fair price, you can always hand it down or use it as a smart home controller, when they release the next pad.
Tell me what company will let you upgrade your device every year? ...which sounds like what you have been doing along.

Exactly - I'm actually the complete opposite of you. It's very subjective according to personal preference and mine leans more toward laptop use. I just returned from a week of travel where I took my Air 2, 13" Dell laptop with QHD screen, and an 8" Galaxy Tab S2 tablet. The S2 was far more convenient to use on the plane and the laptop was my preferred device when in the hotel - the Air 2 saw virtually zero usage and I'll likely leave it at home on my next trip.

I pretty much only use my iPad as a portable TV. Got Hulu, Netflix & APV. I use my iPad daily alongside my Macbook Air or iMac.

It's also useful when traveling as I usually leave the laptop home when I go on a holiday. Also use it to show people my photography work through the Dropbox app.

To me, it's a useful tool. But I would not use it as my only tool. I have a Swiss Army knife that works well in a portable package and has many uses but if I'm going to open a wine bottle I'm going to use my bottle opener in the kitchen, if I need to open a can when camping sure I'll use the Swiss Army knife and not bring my can opener from the kitchen.

1- ipads provide an excellent consumption experience. Smaller footprint, easier to carry around, great battery life... and many more things.

2- a laptop or desktop could easily be that third device.

3- the iPad, for some, negates the need for the laptop or desktop... fanless or not.

4- things take too long on any device when you're not used to it.

5- browsing experience is excellent on the iPad, mobility and ease of use is second to none.

6- you have the option to use it comfortably while holding it, or as a laptop with a stand... sounds pretty good to me.

7- the same can be said for a lot of software and all platforms.

8- if you have both a laptop and an iPad you might realize you don't really need the laptop.

9- that can be said for all devices.

10- 11 -12 - many many things are just quicker with an iPad. Take some time and learn how to actually use it.

13- simple minds take too long to do simple things.

14- a bad workflow can not be blamed on the device.

15- You may be better off with an iPad and phone combo.

16- that's why they are complicated. If they weren't complicated then they'd be easy and fast to complete.

17- Bluetooth anyone?

18- in my opinion iPads are great for work AND drawing.

19- iOS Office apps are perfectly capable for most tasks.

20- in a few years everything will have advanced and hopefully be better.

21- your list is way too long, one sided, repetitive and personal to be applied as a universal rule/issue.

I updated first post to 36 reasons as 20 reasons are way too little for the current state of things.

You've been complaining about iPads for over a year. You're either trolling or really confused. If iPads don't work for you, then great, they don't work for you. For many people they do. For me, I can do just about everything:
  • VoIP calls while using notes and calendar to make appointments, etc.
  • Blogging.
  • Server administration.
  • Some web site development (it's getting better but the tools are still a little immature for it).
  • All banking, but not taxes.
  • Watching TV, etc. using Plex, Netflix, and the iTunes Store.
  • Reading books.
  • Replying to trolls on forums.
Honestly, from a cursory read of your previous posts, it sounds like the largest-screen, most powerful laptop is a better choice for you. Perhaps you should stop buying iPads and just stick with a laptop?

WTF?

Tech and needs move really fast if you don't know. Also people can change their minds. Already on the basis of that, looking at what people may have written is kinda pointless - especially on a tech forum. Haven't clicked the link though as I just don't care.

It has nothing to do with trolling. It has everything to do with love for tech and a wish that iPad was better, as it could be more developed. Should the debate just be praising it?

Since then we've had the Pro's for some time and they made no true progression for iPad in my opinion. Thought developers would be way more over it.
