Tonight I refreshed my MacPro 1,1 utilizing the Pikify3.1 package & successfully installed El Capitan 10.11.4

LQJohYh.png

This is exactly what I wanted. To keep utilizing this system, specifically to catalog footage and pictures. I had upgraded everything hardware wise, even did the 8-core xeon upgrade. However I was running snow leopard server and could not run current apps and utilities without issues. I'm very satisfied with the way everything is running now and am glad I do not have to put this old workhorse down quite yet :)

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread - Huge help.

Ah that's good to know. So any ideas why I can't get the firmware update to work? could it be because of the boot64 updating the EFI each time I shutdown?

Unless something changed since when I did it 2 years ago you have to do the firmware upgrade while running an officially supported OS. In my case I did it while running Lion.

Boot64 and the boot.efi files are not the same as "the firmware upgrade" they are different.
Boot64 is a Launch Deamon that watches the file locations for changes to the boot.efi files. Boot64 does not update the EFI evrytime you shutdown. It watches the /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi and the /usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi files. If an Apple update overwrites the files, it will put the Pike versions back. It does this before the Apple Update gets to the end of the update and asks to restart. Therefore when you restart you will be okay.

The firmware upgrade is for the EEPROM, part of the hardware.

Did you get the upgrade tool off the Netkas forums? If you did, be aware there are two versions, one for the early MacPros and one for the later MacPros. Make sure you're using the right one.
http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,1094.0.html

Thanks for the clarification on that and sorry for the delayed response. I was using the correct version but I downloaded it from somewhere else. Tried the one in the link you sent anyway but I still have the same issue.
Interestingly, before I started any of this process and I was still running Lion with the old CPU's I ran the firmware update and it worked. I then downgraded it because it was only showing 1 CPU and I thought that was because I hadn't put the 4 core ones in yet. Having read more about this since I now realise that I just needed to reboot a couple of times to get the other CPU to show.
It seems to be working fine with the 1.1 firmware so I think I'm just going to leave it. Just strange that the upgrade now isn't working.

That is odd. But your not missing anything besides the CPU ID. I didn't notice any difference in terms of fan speeds either. I use MacFanControl to auto regulate my fans.

Running windows 10 home.
Sry if I am not supposed to post this on this thread.
Might be helpfull if someone thinks also off installing win 10.
I just noticed windows 10 home uses just 1 physical cpu. I already read up a bit on it and I think
i need to buy windows pro ( another 100 $ ) to enable the 2nd cpu.
Only microsoft can come up with something like this.

I was like realy upset for at least an hour.

now I am angry again. needed to change region in the store to finish the purchase. 160 euros for an upgrade. not doing it. tried with paypal and a fake us address, but that didn't work...

update : I found a cheap pro key on ebay. ( 15 euro ) now running pro and seeing all cpu's.

Alright guys, I need help.

I installed 10.11 flawlessly last October, and stupidly updated it while updating itunes. It no longer works. I dusted off my 10.6.8 SSD, threw that in bay 2, and booted from that which is what I am currently typing this on.

I downloaded the newest .efis, but I am not seeing clear instructions on how to install them.

Help? I suck at terminal but I can follow point by point instructions.

Thanks in advance...

Have you looked at Page 56, post #1390

Using Boot64 will help prevent future breakage when updating.
P1 also has info on where the Boot.efi files are located I think.

Yeah, that seems to be aimed at installing OSX. It's already installed. I just need to replace the boot.efis... if I do all that (make a bootable thumb drive, pikefy installer, etc) won't it overwrite my installations?

I basically just need a walk through on how to replace both .efi files manually. That's what I did to install this originally as the auto protect pikefy solution did not exist yet. I know I found clear instructions on doing this last November, but I can't find them now.

Wooohoo! Figured it out.

Found two locations of boot.efi, unlocked them with terminal, and replaced both EFIs with the modified EFIs. Boots fine.

Now I am back in 10.11.6.

So, that being said, how do I update the EFIs in the recovery partition? I can't see the recovery partition in the finder, so I'm unsure how to replace them.

Also, is there an easy way to prevent this from happening in the future? All the pikefy installers tend to be aimed towards doing fresh installs. I already have this installed and would like to modify it to protect/autoreplace the EFIs if I ever do an update again.

Cheers!

Boot64 - as mentioned earlier will prevent problems in the future - just search on this thread for the latest version. It may be on the link I posted as RTHPJM created it. It protects the boot.efi files but keeps SIP on as far as possible. There is another similar script on here as well called (I think) CaptianPikeFix. There is also a discussion on whether recovery is essential - you can always boot back into and earlier OS to sort out issues (as I presume you have done) but there is another script t by RTHPJM to sort recovery - again, it is on this thread so can easily be searched.

does anyone know if there is a el capitan 10.11.6 installer out there, or can 10.11.0 be slip streamed ?
If you are able, then re-download the 'Install Mac OS X El Capitan' application from the Mac App Store. Because Sierra is now the "default" on the Mac App Store, you will find the El Capitan version in the Purchased section, so long as you previously downloaded any other version of El Capitan (for your MacPro or any other Mac you own under that AppleID login).

Apple keep the most recent version on the MAS. Downloading from the Purchased section will get version 10.11.6.

You also need to know....
Remove ALL older copies of Install Mac OS X El Capitan from the machine you are using to download a copy (e.g. Move them to an external drive, then disconnect the external drive). The App Store app uses the Spotlight database to check if there is an existing copy of the installer visible to the system. If Spotlight knows about any version of the Installer, then the App Store app will not allow you to re-download (greyed out button saying Installed, usually, although sometimes the Download button is available but when you click it, the spinner appears and continually spins but the download does not commence). When you have removed all copies from your machine, the App Store app will show the Download button.....

If you have never downloaded a copy of El Capitan under your AppleID, then you'll need to ask around friends and family to download a copy for you....

Thanks to all of you who helped with comments, recommendations and corrections. Upgraded my Mac pro 2,1 to Yosemite with new SSD, Bluetooth/wifi card, r9 280x video card. Haven't yet flashed it to get boot screen and haven't yet done the script to stop updates but everything else is perfect.

Can't believe that this almost 10 year old Mac pro has a new lease on life. Amazing. Just curious. Has anyone tried to upgrade the CPU on these?

Yes, I upgraded to 3ghz CPUs - but more RAM is probably the first upgrade. 32gb is what I have but I believe 56gb is possible (although the 8gb chips are more expensive) for some reason 64gb doesn't work. You may have already done this as you have an SSD and fast GPU installed.
CPU swap isn't too hard but you need to assemble the correct kit- tools, thermal paste, cleaner etc, and read up and watch the You Tube vids to get an idea what is involved. There is a small chance you can brick the machine so may not be worth the small performance gain.

It needs 12Gb of RAM to complete the install. It's the nature of the method we are using...

Great thanks !

May i now ask the following.
What is the difference between MacPostfactor and Mr.Zarniwoop install procedure, which is better for my 1.1 (2.1) MP ? Am i correct, Mr.Z's procedure must have a second mac with El Capitan ?

I started reading the requirements for install and can you confirm i got the concept right.... ?
-I must have 2.1 bootrom installed, which i have on my MP.
-I need an older OSX, i now have OSX LION on my hdd
-I dont have a backup hdd. If I get aproblem, do i have to re-install the 2.1 bootrom over fresh Lion ??
-To install i need ElCapitan Developer Beta 1 installer or any version will do ?
-I will install to my internal 250gb Hdd (non ssd), which i may not partition.
-I need no USB to boot / cannot boot from usb; maybe Lion compatibility or USB device issues i now have

If i choose the Macpostfactor i need to
  1. Download MCPFactor. Where do i store this app? (Desktop?) --Where to get it from, any help ?
  2. I need the Install OS X El Capitan.app (5Gb~) inside Applications Folder of the OSX Lion (in my case)
  3. ----Do i have to have internet connection on or off ?----
  4. Run MCPF and Select "On this computer" on the main window + choose partition i want to install ElCap on.
  5. click install and prompt my pwd
  6. Click reboot. Computer should reboot with the OSXHackers logo
  7. Once booted, Click Continue, Agree and choose the only partition showed.
  8. Click reboot when you see "Installation succeeded!".
What is not clear to me is 'What happened to Lion' is it erased from hdd (sounds good) or is it just
upgraded to ElCapitan ? I prefer to have a clean osx EL Cap. install and if i need a new partition for this
please let me know.

Then, i do nothing about the OS X Recovery Patch
and move on with OS X Software Updates
  • ...
  • Is my MP (2.1) EFI32 compliant ?. If not, do i carry on to next steps Animation Disabler & Airdrop ?
On the other hand, if i choose Mr.Zarniwoop's procedure
  1. I need to download and run the MacOsxBootloader by Pike-A (grey bkg for MP)
  2. download (save /run it to desktop?) pikify 3.1.v12
  3. Have a Install OSX el capitan.app inside Applications folder of the OSX Lion (in my case)
  4. MUST have a second mac, which i dont, therefore i go to the MCPF method ? otherwise...
  5. I run the createpikeinstallmedia script from pikify 3.1.v12 and create a new OSX patched installer which will be placed where i.e. apps folder and remove the original ElCap OSX installer ?
  6. Whats next ?

Ok

So I managed to get follow the guide here and installed El Capitan on my Pro 2,1 with an R9 280x video card. I have also installed a broadcom wifi/BT card (BCM94360CD with the adapter) as well after but it seems i do not have BT functionality even though wifi works great and airplay mirroring is not on. FaceTime and iMessage work though. I am rechecking connections to see if BT connector goes to J2 instead but in the meantime i seem to have no option to airplay to my apple TV.

Any ideas/suggestions?

There were some instances of Apple assembling these Macs with the BT leads labelled incorrectly - is that the checking you were referring to? There has been some discussion about BT working (or not) either in this thread or perhaps the Yosemite thread. There may even be a separate thread for this. I guess if it really won't work an external BT adapter may be the easiest option.

Sorry I actually installed El Capitan but yeah there is no BT at all. I am checking the other threads. Also any solutions to the absence of airplay display mirroring options?

rthpjm,

I will pick this up where mateo107 left off; I have an Xserve1,1 that I am trying to get El Cap installed on, but keep getting the message that El Capitan is already installed. I've come as far as installing a newer graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2600XT will hopefully do the trick?) and creating a Pikified installer on a USB stick, following your instructions to a tee. My Xserve has an Apple RAID card/backplane in it. I have completely reformatted every drive attached to the system so that there is a viable candidate for installation. Is it possible that El Cap will simply refuse to install with a RAID card present? The installer does allow me to interact with the RAID5 setup (add/remove partitions, erase, etc) with Disk Utility, so that's puzzling.
I have compared the relevant sections of my log with both mateo107's and yours, and have found that my logs match mateo107's except it seems that diskmanagementd doesn't populate its results into my logs - this is with 10.11.6 - but I don't believe it is relevant because I know that the partition is GUID/HFS+ formatted.

Hello mateo107

Okay so I have run through a clean install on my MacPro 1,1 (which is upgraded to a 2,1), using 10.11.5 to be a closest match to your environment. I've done a side-by-side review of my install.log and your install.log file. There are a few differences to begin with but nothing major (they look like differences because of networking differences.

We have pretty much the same log entries until here

So I think yours fails 3rd line up from the bottom of the excerpts, but mine is okay

Also, I note that when the installer gets to the disk checks, your disks seem to be showing Windows-style formats, whereas mine show Mac-style formats

I still think the issue is that the installer can't find a candidate volume onto which it can install...

My recommendation: Format your blank drive again, make sure you select GUID partition map/scheme AND select OS X Extended (Journaled) also known as HFS+ Journeled

I'll go have a dig around to see if I can find out what 'install check' is doing... No guarantees at the moment though...
