I used the v14 installer on a 1,1 (now reporting 2,1) with 32GB RAM and the stock 7300gt. Installer appears to have worked, but whenever I restart the screen stays off and the HDD is just making a click every second or so (writing same sector over and over?). If I force a reboot, it takes like five minutes to boot back to the install screen but works.

Also it's only showing that I have 20-24GB RAM (different each reboot), although it showed the full 32 in 10.7. It is cheap memory from China.

Thoughts?

Open the side door leave it off, put it to one side.
Start the MacPro.
Look at the memory riser cards.
Are there any red LED on?
If there are, you should be able to see the screen printing on the riser card, it should give you the slot number.
Shut down.
Try ejecting the RAM module(s), then re-seat them. Make sure you press them home very firmly. A good indication is the side clips, they should be upright and they should all line up nicely. There should be no movement in the clips if the RAM module is properly pressed home.
Power on.
Are all the LEDs off?

If there are no lit LEDs and the problem persists, then try an SMC reset. There are posts on this thread on how to do this.

I don't want to worry you, but a clicking HDD often means it is faulty.... (Rule out the RAM issue first). If it will boot into the Recovery HD (or the installer), you can run Disk Utility from the menus, run First Aid on your HDD.

You will need a newer/better graphics card. MacOS now uses a lot of hardware acceleration. The stock 7300gt card will only run the software renderer. The overall user experience will be poor until you get a better gfx card.

Help needed, Mac pro 2,1 just installed os x el capitan but it does not recognize my xfx 480.
Is there a way to add a kext file to get this running?
Try moving your monitor cable from the current port, to one of the other ports...

Has the card been flashed at any time (or overclocked)? If so try flashing it back to it's shipping firmware

no flash, I even bought another xfx card ,r5 220 and that wont even show anything only the stock works. the r5 does show as a generic ati card in osx (aggravating).

Help!!!. I have a Mac pro 1,1 and wanna upgrade to 10.11.6. I have replace 2 efi.
However, when I boot the 10.11.6, it might hang at the login page and then reboot.
It will do this several times and it could run normally. Is there any way to solve this problem. Thanks

Is that any suggestion?

Sorry, it did not post my response. I have not yet learned how to reply correctly.

I had a similar problem very recently, code running down the black screen than rebooting to my other system drive on my Mac Pro 2,1. I think I solved it by SMC reset using the button on the mother board just under the 4th HDD by pressing it for 5 to 10 seconds using a non metaling probe after shutting down the Mac Pro and removing the side panel. You can reach it easier if you remove the 4th HDD. I did not. Then boot up. My MP is working for one day now. I hope it will continue. This worked for me I hope it works for you too.

You can also try PR reset. Press Cmd+Option+P+R buttons before chime in start and keep it pressed until the second chime.

One more suggestion. Press shift key during start up before chime and keep pressing it until it is near the end of the progress bar. This boots you to the safe mode. If horizontal line scroll on your screen before Finder comes up it is normal for safe mode. This has solved some other weird problems I was having such as apps not launching and Force quit not working. Let us now what works for you. Good luck.

All ok.

Hi all,

I ran into an issue running MacPro2,1 using El Capitan with Pike R Alpha boot.efi.

On my MacPro2,1 I was running the latest El Capitan version without any particular problem, using an ADSL connection with a download speed of about 16 Mbit/s.
Then I switched to a 1 Gbit/s fiber connection.
The first thing I did was to run a speed test (http://www.speedtest.net). Bummer. Mac crashed. So I turned to a recent MacBook to run the test and everything went fine.

From that time on I noticed that, on the MacPro2,1, as soon as I had "high" bandwidth traffic (say over 30 MByte/s) a crash soon followed (generally under a minute).

Crash reports were various, many of this kind:
panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff801cbe7897): slab_nextptr_panic: mcache.bigcl buffer 0xffffff819020d000 in slab 0xffffff81554bb9a8 modified after free at offset 0: 0x6b05020000000d out of range [0xffffff818f32f000-0xffffff819532f000)
Sorry I can't be more precise, but I re-installed OS many times and forgot to keep crash reports.

A strange thing is that local network traffic doesn't lead to crash, only internet traffic. My wild guess is that this difference is due to higher round-trip time, hence higher window size and higher buffer needs.

At first, I suspected a hardware issue, so I ran Apple Hardware Tests (long tests), removed non-Apple extension cards or memory, swapped memory banks and video cards, tried a third party Gigabit Ethernet card, reinstalled OS on a freshly formatted spare disk etc etc but had no success. Whatever the conditions, a week of tests went by but the issue remained.

Then I tried the same tests with a fresh install from OS X 10.10.5 and the issue was gone, re-ran tests with bare 10.11.0 or 10.11.6 and the issue immediately re-appeared.

So I'm back to 10.10 and my MacPro is rock solid again.

I wonder if anyone with a high-speed connection has hit the same issue?

Any clues?

I upgraded to GigaBit internet today. And I experienced the same issue as you described. Have you ever found a solution for it besides using 10.10?

thanks!

NEW for 2017:

Version 14 marks a shift in technique. With V14 the installation process is much simpler, becomes a single pass, does not require an intermediate installer volume (USB memory stick), and does not require the use of the EFI boot selector (which should be a great help to those people with graphics cards that do not show boot screens).

NO USB!

Also note: I have tested V14 on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. It will work (even though the video says "Lion 10.7.x or higher" as the starting point.

See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206886 if you are having difficulty finding a copy of El Capitan.

I made a video

To use v14, pass the path to your target disk. Let's say you want to install El Capitan onto the Macintosh HD disk....

Code:
sudo ./createpikeinstallmedia /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD
[your password]

12Gb or more of RAM is required

Use Version 12 if you want a USB installer....

============== Previous Versions ===========================

Installing Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.x with this pikify3.1 method is a two-step process

Step 1: Use the attached script and files, to build an installer volume, typically a USB memory stick, or a small disk partition.

Step 2: You will then boot off the installer, to run the installation process.

DO NOT be tempted to simply double-click the Install Mac OS X El Capitan on the install volume, you will be wasting your time. It will not work. You must reboot your MacPro and select the Install Mac OS X El Capitan volume from the boot chooser screen...

Once the installer finishes, you will have a working copy of El Capitan with no need to manually change the boot.efi files.

I keep forgetting to mention that this method also builds the Recovery Partition (Recovery HD) too!

Optional step: You can then choose to install the updated version of pikeyosfix now called CapitanPikeFix, or my Boot64 (both do pretty much the same thing), to allow you to run the Apple updates from either the App Store or from the DMG downloads. See the next post #1391...

CAVEATS - memory, backup, fresh install, migration assistant, etc...

==============================================================

INSTRUCTIONS

Download the zip file attached to this post.

Unzip it.

You should have a folder named pikify3.1

In that folder should be a number of files, the script is createpikeinstallmedia. Keep all the files in one location. Some people have tried to use just the script on its own without the accompanying files and then come back for help because it didn't work. You can move the pikify3.1 folder wherever you please, just keep the contents of the folder together.

If you are not familiar with the Terminal and the command line, take a look at post #1569 it will probably help you.

Pre-requisites:

  • Your running OS must be Lion (10.7) or better. I have tested Snow Leopard and the Apple createinstallmedia tool fails (Snow Leopard is just too old).
  • As per Peter's guide, you will need a volume that can be overwritten by the installer
    • This could be a USB memory stick
    • A small disk partition from one of your hard drives (not the disk that you intend to use for El Capitan)
      • You need to be able to boot from this volume
  • The installer volume needs to be at least 8GB
  • Your copy of 'Install OS X El Capitan.app' should be located in your /Applications folder
  • The pikify3.1 folder contains both the black and grey variants of the boot.efi file. When unzipped the boot.efi file is the grey one, if you want to change to the black background variant, simply copy the black one over the boot.efi before you start. e.g.
    Code:
    cp -f boot_black_3_1.efi boot.efi
  • It appears that MacPro1,1 and 2,1 need a lot of memory to achieve a successful install by this method. A minimum of 12GB seems to be required...
Usage:
  • Open a terminal window
  • Change directory to the pikify3.1 folder from the zip file. Let us assume that you downloaded the zip file to your Downloads folder and unzipped it there. (If you have put the pikify3.1 folder somewhere else, please alter the path to suit your location)
  • Change [InstallerVolumeName] to the name of the USB memory stick or your small disk partition. For example if you are using a USB memory stick and it shows on the desktop with the name Untitled, then replace [InstallerVolumeName] with Untitled so that the path reads /Volumes/Untitled
Code:
cd ~/Downloads/pikify3.1
  • You need to run the script as the root user
Code:
sudo -s
[your password]
./createpikeinstallmedia /Volumes/[InstallerVolumeName]

  • OR
Code:
sudo ./createpikeinstallmedia /Volumes/[InstallerVolumeName]
[your password]
  • OR (optionally switch to the black background variant before you start)
Code:
sudo -s
[your password]
cp -f boot_black_3_1.efi boot.efi
./createpikeinstallmedia /Volumes/[InstallerVolumeName]

Be patient, the script will take some time to run through to completion, especially if your installer volume is a USB memory stick!

Once the script completes it will print ### DONE PIKIFYING ### and you should have an installer volume named 'Install OS X El Capitan'

After you build your pikify3.1 USB memory stick, but before you attempt to boot from it, try ejecting it, physically unplug it, wait a few seconds, then re-plug it in allowing it to mount.

  • Reboot your MacPro with the newly created install media (partition or USB stick) attached
  • Hold the ALT key down immediately after the startup chime to enter the boot chooser
  • Choose the Install OS X El Capitan volume
    • For those people with graphics cards that don't show the boot screens
      • If you are using a USB stick (and it's the only one attached), immediately after the startup chime, hold down the C key. If your USB memory stick has an access indicator (blinking LED) you can visually confirm it is booting. Be patient, it takes about a minute before the screen shows anything. OR....
      • Get to the boot chooser as above then press the left-arrow key once, followed by the return/enter key. (Removable media generally shows up last in the horizontal list, pressing the left arrow key takes you from the automatic first entry and wraps the highlight round to the other end of the list, which is usually where the USB stick is presented). OR....
      • If you're using a small disk partition, get to the boot chooser as above then press the right-arrow key once, followed by the return/enter key). If you have just your main disk and the installer volume this should work. If you have more than just those two, experiment pressing the arrow key more than once until you find the installer volume! OR....
      • OR, consider getting hold of a DVI-vga adaptor. You should be able to find one of your DVI ports that will send out a VGA signal (to a VGA connected monitor) and show you the boot screen.
  • Your machine should boot into the Installer, run the installer
    • You may need to click the Reboot button at the end of the install (for some reason, the 10 second countdown doesn't seem to automatically start)
  • Your machine should reboot into the new El Capitan Installation and begin the OS X setup procedure.

I made a video! I hope you like it...

I used my iPhone for the second half, apologies for the moire patterns.

I decided to start from my MacPro running 10.7.x Lion, since this is the last officially supported version.
The only difficulty for people is to get hold of a copy of Apple's "Install Mac OS X El Capitan" app. I recommend using a newer "supported" Mac and then copying it to the MacPro....

One of the steps in the video shows me formatting my hard disk drive, do not do this step if you have data on your hard disk (unless you have a backup and are prepared to wipe the drive)

If you are upgrading I would suggest a clean install of El Capitan onto a spare disk, then use the Apple Migration Assistant to migrate your previous system and user files.
If you are brave and want to try an in-place upgrade, make sure you backup your current system first...

==================== Version 12 ==================================
Version 12 saves the unmodified software in a format that makes it easier to restore. Also adds more checks. The biggest change is that the disk images are now mounted on specific mount points so that my script doesn't conflict with the default mount points.

==================== Version 13 ==================================
Not released

==================== Version 14 ==================================
Version 14 is a major change in strategy. With this version you no longer need an intermediate installation media (USB memory stick). Version 14 emulates the way Apple is currently performing the installation. With version 14 you target the disk you want to install El Capitan onto (not the USB memory stick). I will leave v12 in place for a while. New users should use v14. If you encounter any issues, please post an entry on this thread.

One really big advantage to V14 is that it will reboot directly into the installer. This should be a great boon for those people with graphics cards that do NOT show boot screens. There's no more need to guess how to boot into the installer.

I need to turn off and boot again, and it works.
Try a parameter RAM reset (PRAM).
Reboot. When you hear the chime hold down the following four keys: CMD ALT P R
(CMD is the Apple key)
Keep the keys held until you hear a second chime then release the keys.

Test.

Whilst booted successfully, go to the System Preferences, Startup Disk. Make sure your disk is selected. Reboot.

If you still occasionally get the same symptoms, try an SMC reset.
See the posts around #3240 - #3244

If you still get the same issue, it is possible that your PRAM battery is failing. Consider replacing it....

Hello JohnL72,

I'm not sure what you mean by "I followed the procedure and created the 10.11.6 recovery"....

Did you use the pikify tool (script)?

Pikify is intended to be used to perform a complete installation of El Capitan, including the Recovery HD. There's no need to self-create a Recovery HD.

Did you watch/follow the video?

Ah, I've just had a thought....

Did you press Y to reboot at the end of the script?
If not, are you trying to boot into the installer by yourself?

If that is what you are doing, you need to know that pikify v14 puts the install files onto the target volume. You need to reboot by selecting the target volume, not the Recovery HD.

The target volume should be "blessed" to boot from the installer location (not the standard location).
From a terminal, type the following (substitute your-target-volume-name for the appropriate disk name)
Code:
bless --info "/Volumes/your-target-volume-name"

The finderinfo[0] line should read /Volumes/your-target-volume-name/OS X Install Data

If not you, run these commands
Code:
sudo -s
[your-password]

/usr/sbin/bless -setBoot -folder "/Volumes/your-target-volume-name/OS X Install Data" -bootefi "/Volumes/your-target-volume-name/OS X Install Data/boot.efi" -options config="\OS X Install Data\com.apple.Boot" -label "El Capitan Installer"
reboot

That should reboot for you and when it starts up it should go straight into the installer...

Hey Guys,

I got the gtx 570, installed it after I did the El Capitan installation. I see an initial gray screen, but it goes to black. I can still see the cursor sometimes and move it, but I get nothing else. Any help is appreciated. I had to put radeons back in to run the mac off of another Snow Leopard boot volume. I did the installation after booting from a Lion volume BTW.

thanks, G

Just a guess, but do you have to install drivers for this card manually? Radeon drivers are included as part of the OS but I think Nvidea stuff has to be downloaded. I am not familiar with this card but assume it isn't AMD.

The black screen maybe just the version of El Capitan you have is set to use the black boot screen - with white Apple logo. Mine does this - grey then switches to black as the "fix" goes in.

Have you downloaded Nvidia web drivers for el capitán? Do it while radeons are in, try to install the drivers on the hdd ir partition where you have el capitán. If Nvidia web drivers are not compatible with snow leopard you may need a copy of osx lion fully updated. Not 100 percent sure but could work out
