Every Web Driver works with only one system build, 10.11.5 final have different one than 10.11.5 Beta 4, or 10.11.4 Final etc.
So you search it by build version, which you can find here:

So, it's done. Successfully updated to 10.11.5, no problems. Download from MAS, install, during the reboot there was something funny to be seen on one of my screens, looking like a broken graphic card, but then it said "completing install" with the white apple on black ground and the machine starts 10.11.5 .
I used the "Boot64 v3" script from here to protect the boot.efi files.

Just updated to 11.5 from 11.4 having installed Boot64 and verified it working. Everything seemed fine - only small issue was the Logitech mouse not working and a window suggesting I had plugged in another receiver. Pulled the Unifying dongle thing and reinserted and all seemed OK. Noticed I have 2 mouse icons in the Logitech Unifying Software System Prefs but any change made to one was applied to both - weird. Just restarted and it seems back to normal now.
Thanks again rthpjm for the code to make this work.

Try putting your 2GB DIMMS in slot 1 and slot 2 (they are currently in slot 3 & 4).

In theory it should not matter what order they are inserted (except that they need to be in same-size pairs). Having your largest DIMMS first might help.

It looks like you may have failing RAM. It's worth removing them and re-inserting them all. This usually improves the mechanical and electrical connections.

Then follow the advice from hwojtek above, remove 1 pair at a time and run for a while until you find a stable configuration.

I just tried updating my MP 1,1 (upgraded graphics card to a hd 5770) from Lion to El Cap. I plugged the hard drive into my MacBook Pro and ran the install, then changed the boot.efi file to the pike-ified file from his site. I plugged the hard drive back into the Mac Pro and got the flashing question mark finder icon. Holding down option or cmd+R does nothing on restart.

Can anyone help this noob out? Would love to get this up and running.
TIA

Progress! Holding down option while startup brings up the startup disk screen. Selecting either the OS disk or the old recovery portion just restarts the computer to a gray screen though.

Help!

What graphics card model does your MP 1,1 have?

Try a PRAM reset on the MP 1,1 (reboot, listen for the chime hold down the following four keys, Apple-Alt-P-R, until you hear a second chime then let go).

Is this El Capitan disk the only disk in the MP 1,1? Do you have another, preferably with a bootable version of Mac OS X....

If not, retrace your steps and connect your hard drive to the MBP. Carefully check that you replaced the boot.efi files on your MacPro hard disk (and not on your MacBook by mistake).

Using the Finder, navigate to the MacPro's HDD, then System : Library : CoreServices.
Highlight the boot.efi file,
Press Apple-I key combination to bring up the Finder info window for the boot.efi file
Check the size, it should be around 300K. If it's around 600K then you still have the Apple version.
Also check the other location, navigate to the MacPro's HDD, then press Shift-Apple-G, in the box that pops up, type usr, click Go, then continue to navigate to standalone : i386
Highlight the boot.efi file,
Press Apple-I key combination to bring up the Finder info window for the boot.efi file

Or using the Terminal

Form your MBP, open a terminal with the HDD attached, type
Code:
ls /Volumes
You will get a list of the attached disks. Determine the name of your MacPro disk, it is usually Macintosh HD (but if your MacBook Pro's hard disk is also called Macintosh HD, then the MacPro's disk will have a suffix number e.g. Macintosh HD 1)
Let's assume your MacPro's disk is called Macintosh HD and that your MacBookPro's disk is not the same, (there's only one partition named Macintosh HD), then type
Code:
ls -lh /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
You should get a "long listing" which will include the size of the file.
Also check the other location
Code:
ls -lh /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi

If either file has the incorrect size, have a go at replacing it again.

Thanks for getting back to me rthpjm. I neglected to include the graphics card. It's an Apple GD 5770.

I checked, double and triple checked the size of the boot.efi file on both the MP and MBP; the MP is about 300k like you said it should be and the MBP is about 600k.

I tried resetting PRAM but when I let go of the four keys, it just sat in an endless loop of the gong sound. I've never seen or heard of that before. I shut the machine down and started it up again and it's still giving me the question mark finder icon blinking on the screen.

Have you tried reseating the RAM modules? Try booting with the side panel removed - are there any lights on the riser boards containing the RAM? If so you may have a bad module or one that needs reseating.

Do you have any 512mb modules in there - they can cause issues - not sure if they usually cause more problems with installation with USB installer than running El Cap, but may be a good place to start having tried the other suggestions.

Thanks for responding ANT3000. I had 17GB in the machine: 4x4 and 2x512. I left the 512 in there when I upgraded to 16. I removed them and now have just the 16gb, all sitting on the top shelf thing. Fired it up and nothing changed. Still get the flashing finder question mark. I restart and hold down cmd + r and it still goes to the flashing question mark.

No lights on the ram shelf things while running. They flash red for about half a second on startup and power down (the same they did when running OS X Lion as I had observed that last week prior to attempting this).

Hi Jon,

Try this....

Boot your MacPro in verbose mode. When you hear the chime hold Apple-V. Instead of the grey screen you should get a black background with text. See if it stops somewhere then report back....

My best guess is that you need to "bless" the MacPro disk so that it will boot properly. You say that you manually changed the boot.efi files. Depending on how you do this, it can "lose" the boot association...

Connect your MacPro to your MBP. Then bless the MacPro volume.
Code:
Bless --folder /Volumes/MacProDisk/System/Library/CoreServices --file /Volumes/MacProDisk/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi

The other thing to try is to boot into the recovery partition using the MacPro.
You need to replace the boot.efi file on the recovery partition too, or use my rrhd script bundle from this thread (just search this thread). Run the rrhd from your MBP with your MP disk attached.

Disconnect, boot the MacPro, at the chime hold down Apple-R ( or if your 5770 shows the boot screens, hold ALT to get to the boot chooser, click on the Recovery HD.) At least that way you will know your MacPro will boot....

Not that anyone asked :) but you might like to know OS X 10.11.6 beta 1 installs like a dream. No boot.efi replacement, just a smooth install.

Peter.

Thanks rthpjm and ant3000 for the suggestions. I had to get back to work this week so I ended up reverting. I think I'm going to wait until I can get an SSD installed and try to install it on that; that way if it doesn't work, I can just plug in my old drive and keep working and tinker on the second drive until I get it working without affecting my work.

Thanks again! I'll give it a try later

Not sure if others have had the same issue after updating to 10.11.5...

I installed 10.11 on my MacPro 2,1 with no issues via pike's boot.efi, but the newest update 10.11.5 installed via Mac App Store my Mac seemed to reboot improperly, sounds like its trying to boot off the CD/DVD.

I had to shut it down and hold the Option key and boot into my Lion partition, re-downloaded the boot.efi and reinstalled it back into its proper places in my El Capitan partition.

Rebooted and still sounded like it was trying to boot off my CD/DVD again, it kept doing it in a loop with no end.

Shut it down, held Option key and manually booted from the El Capitan partition and sure enough this time it booted and finished the 10.11.5 update.

However, every time I do a re-start or reboot, I have to manually hold Option key and boot into my El Capitan. If I leave it by itself to reboot, it'll keep trying to boot into the CD/DVD it seems.

I already performed a PRAM reset and also set the startup disk to El Capitan, so not sure what happened. El Capitan still works as normal, its just booting.
