I just tried installing mavericks on my mac pro 1,1 with stock 7300 gt 256mb and I used that ssoft terminal program to make the usb flash mavericks install for the 1,1 machine and and it booted right up and I started the install and about half ways a stops with a error message window, Error I got said something like "install failed, the software failed on this machine" had a yellow explanation point, something like that so I shut down the mac pro.

What you guys think is it because of the 7300gt 256mb card in it currently,or need to redo the ssoft flash drive? Thanks

Also another question with lion installed can a pc nvidia card like a gtx 560ti work with or without flashing the card in lion or does it have to be mountain lion and up?

That is usually a corrupted file error but could be a plethora of things. Just try it again, maybe even a few times if you need to. As for the 560ti, it will work in lion without flashing but you will not have a boot screen of course.

When you make the USB key... Step 1... using disk utility to copy the image to the key... RESTORE the image to the patron, do not copy the image to the key as such.

Would also pay to do step ZERO and format the USB key with ONE partition and ensure the disk type is GUID.

I believe the restoring process will do all the formatting needed.

Not, I didn't. I just let the SFOTT script do it's thing after setting the parameters up. Was there another step to complete?

----------

Clearly you did something wrong.

In a technical set of instructions it is important to follow every step EXACTLY. No "rounding up" or "close enough for government work".

If you have a Mac that can natively run Yosemite you can cut the uncertainty way down.

It's a Mac Pro 1,1. I went through the steps one by one. Even followed the video on YouTube and selected did everything that was listed in the video.

So if the gtx 560ti works in lion then why bother installing anything newer like mavericks since most mac programs will work with lion anyways right? I can then install windows 7 via bootcamp so if I want to do some gaming I could use boot into windows.

So I rebuilt the USB drive and it showed up in the start menu in the system prefs. I selected that to boot into and when it restarted, it showed a ? in a folder and then booted into the hard drive instead.

Suggestions?

That's totally up to you. There's a lot of other features that come with Mavericks and Yosemite. For example iCloud Drive, SMS messages and the new versions of iWork.

So, it doesn't see a bootable install/OS there.

So something is wrong. Your best bet is going to be to dig through this thread and find someone with same problem.

You have to understand that "I did everything right but it doesn't work" is a difficult thing to diagnose remotely. Something either with the physical USB stick or your implementation isn't kosher, or hasn't followed past users.

Ok so now we possibly know with lion I can use a gtx 560ti, so got few more questions, how about a newer generation higher end cards will they still work with lion if not then how do I know which ones only work with lions is there a database list out there?

Also what type of pci express power cable I need is it a 6-pin to 6-pin? If im right the connector on the mac pro motherboard is a 6 pin and so is the video cards right?

Yeah I don't use iwork, icloud drive, and sms messages yet so i guess I don't need mavericks.

This thread was created in order to help owners of unsupported Mac Pros install Yosemite. I fail to see what you are trying to accomplish by telling us you prefer Lion and Windows. Well, good for you. I like fried eggs and bananas.

Search the forums. All the answers you need are out there. Also iCloud Drive and SMS messages are only part of Yosemite. It is not a standard 6pin - 6pin cable. As Peter said this is not the thread to discuss what GPU to use with Lion. If you want to up grade to Yosemite you can use all the way up to a GTX 980.

Manually replace efi?

Hi all,

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 with 10GB of RAM, an Asus 210 and had Yosemite running until I realized after shutdown I had automatic updates on. It tried to boot into 10.10.2 and alas, I am stuck. I had the original DMG install of Yosemite 10.10.0 I used backed up, but no other mac available (I am new to my area, and dont know many people) to restore it from. As I cannot see the boot screen when using my Asus 210 card, I tried putting in my original ATI X1900 card for just the sake of restore, but once I select the drive with the restored yosemite install (creating on a Sata-to-usb adapter on a hard drive drive using Transmac on a Windows, which I then slide into an open slot on the mac pro), I get the black apple logo and a progress bar until around 40% complete and then it goes dark. I would like to think it is still continuing to install, but I cannot see it because of the gpu not being supported. So I have two questions:

1. Can I simply install both gpus (X1900 and 210) and switch cards and physically connect my monitor to the 210 once the screen goes dark? Will having two GPUs interefere with the install process?

2. If so, can I simply pull out my primary drive (now with 10.10.2) connect that to my pc via transmac, replace the EFI, and add it back in to my mac pro? IF so, do I simply download the new EFI and replace in /usr/standalone/i386 ? Please advise if this is a possible solution, and if so, is there any other required steps? I will of course get the pikeyosefix script once I am back up and running.

Thanks to any and all for the help! Still so excited that I even got my mac pro 2,1 updated in the first place, thanks for all the hard work!

Regards,
Dustin

You should always keep a partition with a working version of your OS on it just in case an update messes-up your installation.

You should just try and test your configuration and let us know how it works. ;)

You will have to manually replace the EFI and then fix it's permissions. BTW, there is a script in this thread that makes shutdown process that will check to see if boot EFI has been changed (for future updates)

I have read about getting the boot screen with an apple card hooked up to the HDMI input of the moniter and the Nvidia card plugged into the DVI port. I think the DVI port takes over when you get to the log-in screen.

good luck

I just installed Yosemite on my 2006 Mac Pro and it let me log in and use iMessage without issues. So after seeing that, I rebooted into Mountain Lion and it still wouldn't let me log in.. hmm.

Craigslist and EBay are CRAWLING with cheap old hard drives.

Why oh WHY are people putting Yose and Mave on their only boot disk. It's like adventuring down into a dangerous cave without a flashlight when there was a table full of them by the entrance. THINK before you do this.

Putting Yose on a 1,1 is trivial. It is simple and easy if you just follow the instructions and don't try to take shortcuts. But it is also 1,000.000% easier (approx) if you don't put this on your only working boot drive.

Drop $5 or $10 and buy a crappy old HD. If you don't want to pay for CCC you can use "Restore" function in disk utility to do same thing. Create a minimum of 2 working installs that can exist separate of each other. Being able to replace the boot.efi file from a separate working OS is crucial and makes this so much easier.

People are turning a simple thing into a multi-hour torture session for NO REASON WHATSOVER. Your computer can easily have a dozen working OS installs. Why overwrite your only working one,? Pure insanity.

There has been some recent change in Apple's authentication because all the sudden hackintoshes running Yosemite that have not been able to login to iMessage since November are now able to without changing anything

It's weird that it doesn't work in Mountain Lion though. Any word on if it works on Mavericks?

Sorry you had to be little sensitive about my questions, I don't prefer lion I don't care what os I really use just want one thats new enough not to old. What I meant about why not just use lion was kind of like why bother going through all that work to install mavericks and yosemite if lion will still work with a good high end video card. Im new to macs so it just seems like in mac you can get away in using an old OSX and hardware, unlike windows you cant really even use windows xp and a 2006 pc computer is really crappy vs a 2006 mac computer which are still usable.

Again I don't have any love for lion lol I don't care if I use panther as long it wasn't to old I guess.

The point is, if you are happy with Lion then that is fine and the best NVIDIA card you can use is GTX 570. If you want something more energy efficient an more powerful then you must update the OS. You could run a GTX 970 if you like but you will have to run Yosemite. Lion has many limitations compared to Mavericks or Yosemite. Lion was one of the worst versions of OS X that I have used. I hated that it would index my drives at every boot speeding finIsh the machine for like 10 mins. Neither Mavericks or Yosemite did that.

I agree with this, but let me share. I have a 4 TB SSD/SATA hybrid drive as my main drive. I have a 1 TB Carbon Copy Cloner as a backup bootable drive. I have a third 1 TB drive that has a copy of my Yosemite installer on it. I have a 4th 1 TB drive that has Lion installed on it. I also have a 2 TB Time Machine, a USB stick with the Yosemite installer on it, and a bootable USB stick with Lion on it.

I updated to Yosemite on my Mac Pro 1,1 last November. I installed the Pike fix and updated to 10.10.2 with no difficulty. I awoke approx a week later to find a screen with a question mark folder on it. Out of the blue. NONE of the drives on my machine would boot (not even the Lion). I tried each one separately. Neither would it boot into safe mode. I tried my Yosemite USB stick - it would not boot. I tried my Lion Stick - it did boot. I tried my Yosemite installer from there and I was able to update again to Yosemite. I installed Yosemite Pike Fix and updated to 10.10.2 again. All has been well since. Not sure what happened. Just reporting what happened to me. I do think though, that when I was at the question mark screen, that I could have had 100 separate bootable drives and none of the would been accessible at that point.

Yes thats the point pretty much I would be happy with lion if it runs my gtx 560ti coming out of my old amd pc. Because I don't plan on buying the latest generation cards aren't they like 500 bucks and up something like that lol? Thats why I didn't even buy one for the pc because I can still game with the 560ti, I'll get a better card in the future. I'll be broke upgrading every 6 months.

Another question does lion have the best nvidia driver built into the osx for the 560ti or after installing and booting up do I simply go to nvidia.com and do the normal selecting the model card and OS like you do in windows?
