For further reference my Mac Pro with x5365s 12GB RAM, Seagate SSHD, GTX570 scored something like 12000 for 64bit geek bench multi core.

That's good to know. I wondered how much of a bump the x5365 would be over the x5355. Looks like about a 20% increase.

I used to do a lot of video editing, which is why I upgraded my processors. When I did it the price difference was pretty substantial, too. I think I paid $60 for the pair of x5355s. I rarely do any editing any more, so upgrading further wouldn't be of much value to me. It's still nice to see this thing fly compared to the original processors when I'm using HandBrake to rip a file, for example.

I would probably do better if I had some better matched RAM. Right now I have 2-4GB, 2-2GB, and 4-512MB sticks. They cost me nothing, so I can't complain....

Thanks for what you do, Hennesie2000, and to everyone else who does it as well. You folks have made a lot of people really happy.

Yea I do some video editing and lots of Photoshop work. I built a hackintosh after my Mac Pro died with an i7-4790k @ 4.0 GHz, 16GB DDR3 1600 RAM and a GTX 970. It scored 16900 in geek bench but the biggest difference I see is compressing a 1080p movie using DVDfab in Windows 8.1. What used to take 45 mins now takes 5 mins, 70 FPS vs 450 FPS.

I did read your post and was pointing out that you didn't look too hard when trying to find the command to unlock the file. It was posted just a page back and has also been discussed several times in this thread.

ok i didn't come here for an argument, I came for a solution. I found the solution somewhere else and thought I'd share it in case anyone else takes the same path. If you had a solution you should have posted it. I didn't know that it was posted a page back as theres over 100 pages in this thread. Again thanks for your help .

Never mind previous posts. Spent all day re-creating everything. Got it back. Now running fine on 10.10.2 again. Thanks to all who have posted their hard work on this site. It would be impossible to have my good old Mac Pro 1,1 running without all of you..

white screen after 10.10.2, but different maybe.. methods posted do not work.

Hello,

I've read a lot of the thread posts here and see people running into issues after the 10.10.2 update, but mine seem slightly different... Hopefully I didn't miss one that covers my issue... I'm unable to get a root prompt let alone mount any file systems..

I have a mac pro 2,1 (8 core dual cpu 3.0) that I had installed 10.10 using method described in post number 1 of this thread. It has 12 gigs of memory, ATI 5xxx video card, and a single monitor. I used the pre-canned dmg linked in that post to do the original install.

Being a noob and first timer doing this, I didn't turn off automatic updates. The machine updated to 10.10.1 without issue but a few weeks ago 10.10.2 came out. When I came home one night I seen the mac wanted to apply updates and reboot. I let it. that was the last time it was able to boot correctly.

Upon booting off the updated internal disk it would flash the folder with a question mark. I stuck in the USB key I used for the original install and it starts to boot normally. When the progress indicator under the grey apple is about 60% along, the apple logo and progress indicator disappears. I've let it sit in this state for hours (overnight) without luck. This is the same result for any boot attempts I do off external media. Even the 10.6 and 10.7 disks I have.

Attempting to boot into verbose or single user, the last message I see is similar to "USBMSC Identifier (non-unique) <number codes here..>. I suspect the "number codes" are device ID but if they are relevant let me know and I'll get them. I assumed or thought it may be a non issue as it 'line returns' down to the next line, but just doesn't print anything else beyond that.. There were no USB device changes since, all usb devices are apple ones excluding the usb sticks i'm using to boot.

Booting into recovery ends up at the white screen.

Few things I've tried:

boot of install media for 10.10, 10.6, 10.7, and 2 of the PC hackintosh boot images.. All result in white screens eventually.
used both usb 3.0 and 2.0 sticks. and 3 different vendors of.
zapped the pram and reset the smc.
tried front and back usb ports
pulled all drives and all combinations of (internal) excluding dvd drive.
disconnected all usb devices, even the keyboard as a test.
disconnected wireless and blue tooth hardware.
held option to select boot device and selected a hd which has a non upgraded bootable (or use to be) version of 10.10
unplugged mac over night. (getting desperate)

I've been poking at it on and off for 2 weekends now, but I'm out of ideas... I've not yet swapped out the video card (would have to go borrow one).

any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance for your time.

Hi all, I really hope someone can help me with this. I'm sure I am late on this thread, but I only got around to do this now, so I count on your kindness and help to give a hand.

I created the Yosemite flash Drive using SFOTT and it seems to be working fine, but when I try to boot from it I got stuck for a minute in a black screen with the white Apple logo, and when the loading bar appears and starts to load some text runs on my screen for a second and then the Mac reboots. It is a 2.1 MacPro, with SFOTT for Maverick installed on it, and with the Mavericks mode just runs flawlessly.

I don't know what to do, and I never arranged kernel extensions before, so I'm really stuck. I need Yosemite for work because I use Pro Tools and now I'm unable to even attend my clients. Anyway, any help will be very much appreciated, from the bottom of my heart! Thank you in advance!

Take a picture of the kernel panic and post it.

Solved! Stupid! Restored the BaseSystem.dmg to the USB device instead of the partition. Booting was stuck at waiting for device when I debugged with the verbose boot.fi.

OK, this just might be the thing that's saves me. Have tried three times now building on two different USB keys. I can't choose the USB key in System Startup - not blessed or something... and when I boot it goes no where after the black boot screen (white apple logo). I repeated the build to another internal hard drive... quite successfully and have Yosemite 10.10.1 installed without any issue.... I'm retesting the USB key build now...

Edit: Install off USB key succeeded (on second attempt... maybe)... or maybe I choose the wrong installer and it installed of the "Installer" partition on one of the internal hard drives... so I have to reformat my Test drive and do it again...

On the upside 10.10.3 is now installed on my main Yosemite partition. No issues.

I wanted to do this but I do not have the 5770 upgraded video card. Can I proceed with the upgrade without the upgraded video card? I have a 2006 Mac Pro.

I just recently got a Mac Pro 1 1 that was going to be trashed at work. Thought it had some potential to be current. I've ordered a SSD to HDD converter from Icybox. I also picked up a lower end graphics card ASUS EN210.

I have a usb and what not ready with Yosemite on it via the SFOTT method. So that part is done. (If there is a better method I'll explore that.)

I've been reading about "Trim" and it referencing to SSD's. I'm guessing this is an after the installation thing?

Is the ASUS EN210 good enough for now to get the installation done? I'm looking to purchase a better graphics card if this all works out. What graphics cards would you suggest?

Depending upon how powerful you want to go with the graphics card, check macvidcards.com I bought the Nvidia 8800 GT 1GB card from them for my Mac Pro 1,1 It works great in Yosemite. Awesome graphics. Also, the macvidcards guy posts on this forum, so you can talk to him directly if you want to ask questions.

Hey guys, happy Mavericks user here, thinking i'll make the plunge to Yosemite soon.

I will probably do a clean install, but just wondering if any of the methods described work with simply updating Mavericks?

Also, has anyone heard from the SFOTT developer recently? Seems like he kinda disappeared end of last year...

sorry to reply to myself..

I tried the SFOTT script this time. but because it boots with a black background instead of the standard white, I think I'm seeing an error message whereas before perhaps I couldn't?

should it help an image of the panic is attached.

Tonight I shall try "Hennesie2000's Guide for installing Yosemite on a Mac Pro 1,1 or 2,1 - the boot.efi method", which somehow I missed. perhaps 9th time is a charm? lol...

good night!

Yes that card is fine.

Both SOFTT and the manual guide method work but you have to make sure to remove the Tobyg TiamoMacProFix launch daemon before doing the upgrade. Otherwise it will replace the boot.efi file with the older Mavericks one.

Yes that card will be fine for a basic setup. As far as a better card there are many but it depends on your budget and what you need it for. Trim is done after the install but depending on the SSD you bought it may or may not be needed.

Try the manual guide and make sure to really pay attention to everything in the guide. Unfortunately that KP is so early in the boot process it is hard to tell what is causing it.

I'm pleased to report confirmation of my above message.
Successfully built USB key, after doing the initial USB key creation step correctly, and have build the MacPro1,1.

A couple of tips.
1. Erase the intended destination hard drive, format GUID and HFS+
2. Install the postfix - to ensure the boot.efi is reinstalled at shutdown - nice tool there team
3. Upgrade to 10.10.2 - successful
4. I've tested 10.10.3 install (Beta) successfully

I'd like to ask for some clarification on one aspect...
- How do I know the state of my recovery partition? - I have not looked. I downloaded the boot.efi from the first page about 2-3 days ago. Do I need to update this manually? Are there any written instructions or do I mount the drive, change the 2 x boot.efi files as per the instructions for building the USB key?

Thank you!

Does anyone know how to uninstall the PikeYoseFix and/or TiamosMacProfix?
I rather desperately installed both not thinking they both will be acting on their own. Occasionally one wins but most boots have have failed. Just need to keep one.

Cheers

Look in /Library/LaunchDaemons and in /usr/standalone/i386 and delete the corresponding files.

Other drive will not boot

Hello All,

First off, thanks to everyone on here and out there that got Yosemite to install.

Second, I have a Mac 1,1 and cloned my working 10.7.5 drive to another HD and verified it would boot. I used the cloned hd and used the premade image of the USB drive to install Yosemite and everything works! 10.10 is up and running! I then decided to update via App store and ran into an issue where it the install of the combined update hung up and I had to force shutdown. Rebooted and Then Kernel Panic... so I recloned and started over. Still at 10.10 until I can read more about what I can do to get up to date.

Now my issue is that my previous 10.7.5 drive will give the "BSD... blah blah Kernel_task error" at the apple logo. So that will not boot. I imagine it's the firmware or something got copied onto the drive? Anyway, I'd love to be able to select which HD to boot from at will, to keep experimenting and fall back to 10.7.5 to do my audio work. Any Ideas?

Thanks again!

Thank you very much! Been running 10.10.1 for a quite a while on my old 1.1 beast and along came 10.10.2 and poof. Pretty sure it will work as it a did boot twice just have to remember which combo worked. :)

Found that using my laptop with the 1.1 in target mode via FireWire is the ticket as a the double whammy is I also had the install the new web drivers for my Asus GTX 970 card, for which, of course, there are no native Yosemite drivers, but that's good again.

Thanks Hennesie. I did follow all the guides and methods.. Tried about 6 different USB keys too, including the one I did the original install on!

Anyway I now type this from my once again bootable mac. :)

I took an external USB disk drive (HHD) and made an 8 gig partition on it, recovered the same dmg I've been using to it, and it booted without issue...

how strange is that?... anyway....

Thanks for your time with this project, I see you're quite busy here.

take care,

So just wanted to post an update. I have successfully updated my Mac Pro 1,1 to 10.10. Currently upgrading it to 10.10.2 as we speak. It came with some headaches though.. but what doesn't.

For some reason the Kernel folder never did get copied to my installer so it caused the install to freak out and not boot (still don't know why) after copying it over it started up fine and I was able to install Yosemite onto my SSD.

My total investment for it all was 60 bucks. I'll call that a win any day...

I'll be looking into buying a better graphics card that is flashed in the near future.

Hope the best to anyone starting this endeavor and I want to personally thank everyone behind this and making it possible.. keep up the good work.. actually it's great work.

Thanks :)

Non Mac Video Card Woahs

I was trying out a NVIDIA GTX 970 on my macpro 1,1
Bought it out of curiosity to see if I could get it to work, which it did rather well.

I just returned it before the 30 days return policy at best buy.
Tried to put back in the MSI GTX 570 Twin Frozer III, and it's not giving me any signal over the mini hdmi or the DVI anymore, I also have a PC ATI AX6450 that previously booted blind, and it won't give me an image now either.

Does anybody know if there's something I need to clear in the os to allow this card to boot again.

I tried an old ATI RV630 256 MB video card and it works, but quite a downgrade from the GTX.

Is there a comprehensive list of the cards that can be flashed for mac pro?
I see some of the instructions and lists on Netkas, doesn't seem too active.
