Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated. I recently upgraded to Yosemite on my 2006-07 Mac Pro using the pre-patched Yosemite installer. I previously used Tiamo's boot efi to install Mountain Lion with wonderful results. The installation was relatively smooth aside from some switching GPUs back and forth. Interestingly, with Yosemite currently installed, my stock Nvidia (that wouldn't work with ML)works (though very slow). My problem now is my "About this Mac" no longer launches, nor do Preview, Audio Midi Utility, or Facetime. I'm unable to see if my ram is being recognized because I no longer have System Profiler launching. Did I miss a step?

The problem is your GPU. You'll need a new one that is supported under Yosemite. The GPU that "didn't work" under Mountain Lion might function under OS X Yosemite, but it most certainly doesn't work. Grab yourself a new one, there are loads of posts about recommendations in this forum and even this thread.

Thanks. I already switched the GPU to an Asus Ge-force 120, which is the only way I got ML to boot correctly. Everything else seems to be functioning well except for this issue with certain apps not launching. The system profiler and other utility apps not launching is especially strange.

1. Installed Yosemite on the drive
2. Edited the PlatformSupport.plist in /System/Library/CoreServices/ and added the board-ID of the Xserve early 2008 2,1 (Mac-F42289C8)
3. Saved the file
4. Repaired permissions
5. Connected the drive to the xserve and booted
6. Running Yosemite now
7. Rebooted
8. It starts with Yosemite
9. Party time

Now the only thing is to get a new graphics card.

Which one do you recommend? And should i take out the X1300?

Update :

OK i just installed the 10.10.2 update and changed the PlatformSupport.plist
Everything is running!

@MacVidCards do you have the GT120 which is ok to use in my system, i will need two of them because i want to update the other 2008 xserve too. And do you ship to the Netherlands?

Thank you all! Got my Xserve 2,1 on Yosemite
I had install it on a supported mac to Xserve HD (Target mode), now my question is… Can i change PlatformSupport.plist on the Yosemite installer? Do i have to change Distribution file also?

Very interesting. I've never experienced this myself. You're sure the HD is good? Try booting in Safe Mode (hold shift at startup).

Glad it worked.

You don't need to change it on the installer just install as you did and change the PlatformSupport.plist afterwards, i know it is a bit more work but when you install an update of yosemite you have to change that file anyway if it is changed.

I see that you are using the GT120 card, how is the performance? And did yoy remove the old card?

DONT RESET NVRAM! Will kill your Boot.efi

Hey,

Been running Yosemite 10.10.2 for a few weeks now. I just upgraded the RAM on my Mac Pro 1,1 and started to experience some stutter with my magic mouse. Iv done this before a few years back to fix weird issues with my Mac Pro and didn't think anything of it so I restarted my Mac and pressed Command+Option+P+R . Well now it won't boot up to Yosemite. Not sure if Im getting a error on screen or what because I updated the graphics card.

After a long wait it ended up booting into my old OSX lion partition on the first boot. I went to preferences and selected my Yosemite partiton and tryed to boot up but it just hangs.

Im gonna go to bed and deal with this in the morning. When I wake up I throw in my old GFX card and see if I can see whats showing up at boot. Just a Heads up to everyone not to reset NVRAM will seems to break ****.

Thanks

this is incorrect

NVRAM doesn't hold boot.efi

if you were using an unflashed 960/970/980780Ti/Titan Black with web drivers then clearing nvram turns off the web drivers.

If you had trim enabler or for any other reason had it in kext dev mode, resetting nvram will turn that off

Got up this morning and read your reply. Thanks for getting me that info BTW. I threw in my old GFX card and I seen the apple logo at boot(Whoo Hoo!). It booted up like normal (minus all the GFX artifacts that my old ati was spitting out) and I enabled the nvidia drivers and low and behold my mac is running again.

Thanks

Mac Pro 1,1 (10.6.8) - Yosemite Install Stuck

Such a great thread with lots of detail. Thanks for that. Hopefully someone can help me get over this hurdle.

I've created a bootable thumb drive using the pre-patched Yosemite installer, but when I hold down Command+R, it boots up normally right past an options. So I tried holding down the Option key on bootup, but I just get a gray screen. I tried waiting about 20 minutes thinking it might just take a while, but no luck. Any ideas how I can get past this point?

Thanks in advance

OSX: 10.6.8
RAM: 20 GB
SSD as boot disk
Original ATI video card is still in there, but I have a Yosemite card ready for when the update occurs.

It's a mac pro 1,1 (2006)
2 x 3Ghz Dual-Core

do you have a spare drive? or the original drive with 10.7?
then you can boot from that one, or have a yosemite caple macbook anf put the macpro in target mode and install yosemite on the target drive.

You don't want to hold Command+R, that is for recovery mode which I don't think Snow Leopard even has. You just hold Option for the boot menu.

You can try selecting the USB as the startup disk in system preference while running SL. I don't remember if there was some issue with SL seeing a Yosemite drive or not but search the thread.

Hello

I've read a lot of this thread and am getting ready to upgrade my Mac Pro 1,1. I will be upgrading to 10.10 directly from 10.7

Just in case something gets messed up I plan on cloning the current drive to another HD and removing it during the installation. I have a few questions before I start the installation.

Will I run into a problem if I install this on my 10.7 drive? If possible i'd like to do it like this so all my apps and files will be retained without having to transfer everything over and reinstall all my apps.

I am running a flashed ATI 5770. The gpu doesn't display anything until the computer has booted. Will I need to reinstall my 7300gt for the installation or does the Yosemite's installation drive have the drivers needed to make the card work for the installation process?

Lastly I eventually plan on upgrading to the quad core processors. I know that after the upgrade I will need to run the Mac Pro 2,1 firmware upgrade. Can the firmware upgrade be ran after installing yosemite's or should I perform the cpu upgrade while i'm still running lion?

Thanks!

The 5770 will be fine for the install. You WILL need to be running Lion to do the firmware flash.

I've updated to 10.7 now and selected the Yosemite Installer drive as the startup disk. It briefly shows the Apple Logo with the loading bar underneath, but before it completes loading, the screen goes all gray. As if the logo and loader disappear. Not sure if maybe I need the video card that can handle yosemite in there yet or not. I was under the impression that gets installed after yosemite successfully installs.

Unless it is a Maxwell based Nvidia card you can install it when ever.

Thanks for the quick replies :)

Is the full gray screen normal for this installation? I believe I hear the disk working, but I don't see anything. Not sure if I should just wait or try a different approach.

It can take a little while for the installer to come up when booting from a USB 2.0 drive.

I'm stuck :(

I've chosen my startup disk as the Yosemite Installer disk. The computer restarts, I get the traditional gray screen with Apple logo and loading bar. The bar loads and at approximately 25%, both the logo and loader disappear and I'm left with a gray screen only.

Any ideas?

Have you tried it with the new card?

The 5770 will be fine for the install. You WILL need to be running Lion to do the firmware flash.

If I perform the firmware flash from a bootable lion drive at a later date will that cause issues booting back to Yosemite?

And I take it its okay to install over my copy of lion? (I will have a copy if stuff goes wrong).
