Do I have to lock the boot.efi files? Am I using the wrong boot.efi file?
BTW: I've got a fusion drive and no recovery HD

Thanks!

I suspect that this does indeed have something to do with running a Fusion drive, as I had the exact same problem; PikeYoseFix is not working for me. And the procedure to fix an install that's hosed by a software update (as linked in the original post) seems to leave out a key step. Following the instructions as written did not work for me. I can't get the machine to boot successfully off of the Yosemite drive unless I fix permissions after moving the boot.efi files to the new locations (and yes, you should lock the version in /System/Library/CoreServices first). Booting off of the Yosemite USB installer and then running DiskUtility works well for doing this.

Once the permissions are fixed, boots right up.

Smooth update to 10.10.3... With each update so far, Yosemite's performance has improved. It now has little to do with the 10.10 release of last october - and yet very few reviews/sites/blogs/whatever are mentioning it. To me it's far more important than Photos...

A few people have posted yesterday that the Recovery HD update is fine to run.

All updates went fine, 10.10.3 and Recovery Update.
Make sure to disable Trim Enabler BEFORE, Reboot and then Update through App Store your Mac Pro 1,1 / 2,1.

I am using the patch that Hennesie2000 wrote a guide for, the one with Tiamo boot file that used back in Mavericks, and replaced the tiamo boot with the piker's one since 10.10.1

I think the OS is snappier now...

Make sure that boot.fi is the modded one in both spots and repair permissions.

Can someone person help a group who have Fusion Drive or similar what are the exact permissions for the boot.efi and/or boot.efi.pike or boot.efi.Tiamo?
I do not have Fusion Drive, but have made 3 SSDs to a single large Volume using CoreTechnologies and thereby not having the Recovery partition.

I remember having issues when I ran the Pike's patch and had to manual copy the boot.efi file under /usr/standalone/i386 and /System/Library/CoreServices.

I see that the file size of each boot.efi, boot.efi.pike as 313344 with ownership as root:wheel.

MacPro:~ OSXSERVER$ ls -lasrt /usr/standalone/i386/

616 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 313344 Apr 7 19:23 /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi

I have not updated unless I verify the permissions that need to be before applying the 10.10.3 update. Please help and guide.
Thanks

Upgrade XServe 2.1

Upgrade to 10.10.3 went smooth.

Had to reboot with Lion to change the platformsupport.plist to add the board ID.

Everything up and running!

Would be nice to have something like a bootloader to replace the platformsupport.plist when booting.

Updated Mac pro 1.1

Thought I would post this for info purposes,

Had my Mac pro 1.1 did lot of research on updating it so I could use newer software bla bla bla you all know the story anyhow I bought a PC Nvidia 8800 card off ebay for $25 flashed it then I tried making my own bootable USB drive, tried a few methods (I'm sure I was screwing something up) anyhow ended up using Piker Alpha installer and it worked, not only did it work but to my surprise it upgraded my existing Lion install (surprise to me not any of you) you all probably have more experience with Macs than me.

Moral of story just use Pikers-Alpha enough said.

Need help to solve this: "OS X Yosemite is already installed on this mac"

Hi, Peloche,

How did you solve this "OS X Yosemite is already installed on this mac".

I followed all the steps on Post #1 in this tread. It was successfully load in the white symbol and black background. And it also load the utilities etc. But shows that message, and only choice is "restart".

Seems quite similar to your old post.

How you solve that?

Thanks,

Mak

Hi all,

Lot of work already done, congrats !

Made a try with GM Candidate 1 for installer and Hennesie most recent "silly" boot.efi.

Installer boots correctly i get the following message:

"OS X Yosemite is already installed on this Mac."

Despite i'm using only one HDD on the MacPro that is a new 120GB SSD with 2 partitions :

1 x 8Go including the installer
and
1 x 112 Go empty for Yosemite to be installed.

Really do not understand what is happening

Have you got any idea ?

Thanks,

Update 1:

I've used the first installer i made for Yosemite 1 and changed original boot.efi with new ones, i get the same result when running this install:

"OS X Yosemite is already installed on this Mac."

Did you make sure to copy BaseSystem.chunklist?

"OS X Yosemite is already installed on this mac" Error

Did you make sure to copy BaseSystem.chunklist?

Hi, Hennesie2000,

Thanks a lot for your prompt response!

You mean the BaseSystem.Chunklist that I copy and paste on the usb root?
Step "7d: BaseSystem

-> copy BaseSystem.dmg and BaseSystem.chunklist into the root folder of the USB-Flashdrive or HDD"

Yes I did. And I assume this BaseSystem.dmg and BaseSystem.chunklist are the ones that from the installer. Right?

I am using a iMac Late 2006 24". iMac 6,1. Running OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)

Kernel Version now shows: Darwin 10.8.0

There're 4 things I can think of:

1/ I did not use the Boot.EFI from post #2, but I use the one that from the Pike's

2/ The installer I downloaded from Apple Store I did actually open it once accidentally in my Macbook which already runs Yosemite. And at that time, the similar error message showing. And now I use the installer to make the USB stick, do you think that matters? the version is 10.10.2;

3/ I did try to use the SFOTT methods to make usb stick and boot the system before, but not successful as what I did use the post #2 method. But will there any "left over" in my iMac to think that the Yosemite already installed?

4/ Currently I have a boot camp partition running Windows Vista, will this matters?

I even try to re-partition the hard drive to HD with 10.6.8, a new HD blank, and the bootcamp. Then I copy the 10.6.8 to the new HD. But still not solve the problem.

I just try the boot.efi downloaded from post #2, but this time, it event not boot, just in the black screen with white apple.

Help!

Thanks a lot,

Mak

Try following my guide which is linked to in the first post of this thread right at the top. In the guide there are also links to boot.efi files.

However, even if you get it running it has an unsupported GPU that doesn't support OpenCL so the interface will lag and some apps won't even open.

I just performed this upgrade in my Mac Pro 1,1 with relative ease and thought I would mention a couple of things here in case they helped anyone

(TLDR: I had to reinstall PikeYoseFix several times after updates, and Migration Assistant borked things but doing an install directly over my ML Boot drive (well, a cloned copy) worked perfectly.)

I already had a compatible video card I borrowed from a newer Mac Pro (5xxx something or other) so that I had a boot screen to work-with, I will be replacing that with a Radeon (7xxx something or other, I can't remember) card which works fine once booted but has no login screen.

I attempted twice to do a clean install, which worked properly both times. However, after using Migration Assistant to import my accounts, apps, etc. from my ML boot partition I ended up with a system which only booted in safe mode. I tried repairing permissions, installing PikeYoseFix, etc. But no luck. Since it would have probably taken me days to track down the problem (and I had hours to spare, not days) I decided to try it a different way.

So after that I cloned my existing ML Boot partition to test drive, and instead of doing a clean Yosemite install and migration, I performed the install as a standard "upgrade" over ML. This worked perfectly and survived multiple reboots. I cloned the work drive to a back (CCC) and then I installed PikeYoseFix and restarted a couple time. Everything worked great.

I then installed all the Apple updates initially available (10.10.3 etc.). I then had a kernel panic on boot. I tried safe-mode, which worked. I reinstalled PikeYoseFix, and all was golden again (survived multiple reboots without issue).

I then installed a series of other Apple updates which were then available (ARD, iWork, yadda yadda). Again kernel panic on boot, but a successful boot into safe mode. Reinstalled PikeYoseFix and all was good again...

Cloned test drive back to my SSD Boot drive and all went well.

Now it's been up and working well without any further issues. So other than the "safe mode and re-patch" issue, all seems well. Speed is excellent.

Oh, and a quick note for those running home-made fusion drive configurations, which (IHMO) are needlessly complex and prone to failure. I have fantastic performance by doing the following:

a) SSD Boot drive (OWC model so no worries about TRIM).
b) 2x Seagate 2tb Hybrid drives in RAID 0 (I am multiple-redundant backup happy, so I have no worries about using RAID 0)
c) 4tb (cheapie) backup drive in the last bay, which is used to nightly clone my RAID array, in case of drive failure.

d) All my user folders are stored on the RAID.

It's all very, very fast (I run this configuration in my own personal old Mac Pro 1,1 as well as in server running OS X Server, and performance is simply fantastic, so you might consider breaking that Fusion drive back apart and just doing something simple and straight-forward instead, I don't think you'll see any performance penalty).

Question: From what I could determine, the PikeYoseFix was supposed to prevent updates from borking things? Doesn't seem to work for me, but booting into safe-mode and reinstalling it is cake, so no big deal. Or did I do something wrong somewhere along the line?

I am having horrible issues running Yosemite on my mac pro 2.1 :/ Crashing and I had to reinstall it already a couple of times. I have no idea what is causing my computer not to reboot. I have 3 graphic cards at the moment, 2 GTX 650 1 GT7300.

You've been a great help. It seems this has solved the problem for me! I was unable to do this with the Yosemite USB installer stick. I used diskwarrior on another Mac and I mounted the Mac Pro in target mode. A bit more complicated but it did the trick.

Many thanks.

Many thanks.

You're welcome. That info is actually buried somewhere earlier in the thread, as it turns out - I was reading through it last night and saw it (along with a lot of other things I've already forgotten about as well). Lots of people here have helped me (both indirectly and directly) so it's nice to be able to give back.

When trying to boot from USB, I get nothing but a grey screen, is this normal? I also have my ATI Radeon X1900 installed so I could see the BIOS screen. Followed these instructions to the best of my ability and used the boot.efi that was linked there after downloading Yosemite directly from Apple today. Since I can't read the entire thread, did I miss anything? Just waiting patiently here...

careful with Nvidia driver

Good afternoon
i had a problem for the upgrade 10,10,2=>10,10,3
i use a graphic card asus gtx 660
finally it was not a problem with boot.efi

in 10,10,2 it is impossible to install the "QUADRO & GEFORCE MAC OS X DRIVER RELEASE 346.01.02"Version: 346.01.02f01
Release Date: 2015.4.9
Operating System: Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.3
Language: English (US)
File Size: 50.00 MB
http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/83799/en-us

so if you still with the 346.01.01f01
result black screen

my solution i connect my hard drive to my MacBook Pro; i replace the Piker boot.efi by the original one (the apple one for 10,10,3)
repair the autorisation(with os x repair mode)
boot on the external HDD
install the new driver
replace the boot.efi
repaire autorisation
reput the hdd in the mac pro
and it is OK
:)

Just going to add my voice to the chorus of "it works fine".

I have the boot.efi swapping script already installed, the update was flawless. (Though I did come here first to see if anyone ran into stumbling blocks, so thank you folks before me for documenting no issues.)

1,1 Mac Pro flashed to 2,1 with upgraded Procs and running a non-apple Radeon 5770.

Ran the update for recovery partition, don't use the thing because I never set it up properly. Meh.

Thanks again to hennesie2000 for your great write up on how to do this, and for helping me many moons ago when I had thumb drive troubles. (I wrote off your services on my taxes on the 14th, by the way, bwa ha ha).

Additional 10.10.3 update videodriver

XSERVE 2,1

Update went OK, but disables the nvidia webdriver. At this point no update available from nvidia.

So if you want to keep your bootscreen do not update until the update from nvidia is available.

ditto

Thanks to all of those who have put the hard work in getting Yosemite to work on the 1,1. I've faired pretty well so far getting things working. One thing that I have apparently hosed is my recovery partition. I tried to work through the steps on this thread to enable the Option key on boot but it didn't work and I also now can't boot into recovery with Command-R. Any advice out there on how to salvage? Not a deal breaker but more of a learning opportunity for me. I have other system drives I can also boot from.

Thanks

I have the same problem and was also wondering if there might be a solution...
